Arterial stiffening is associated with adverse cardiovascular patient outcomes; stiffness may also be associated with postsurgical events and has been suggested to be a fundamental mechanism in the pathogenesis of aortic aneurysms. Although open repair of aneurysms decreases aortic stiffness, implantation of a rigid endograft is associated with increased aortic stiffness after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). This review provides an overview of aortic wall physiology and the contemporary understanding of aortic stiffness and its implications for patients undergoing abdominal aortic aneurysm repair.

Introduction: Type 2 diabetes, characterized by hyperglycemia, is closely linked to obesity and low-grade inflammation. Acute cocoa flavanols (CF) intake has demonstrated benefits in vasoreactivity, cognitive functions, and antioxidant enzyme activity. However, the physiological mechanisms of CF concerning glucose uptake, inflammatory mediators, and their interplay with aerobic exercise remain unclear in populations with metabolic diseases.

We propose a new class of bivariate survival models based on the family of Archimedean copulas with margins modeled by the Yang and Prentice (YP) model. The Ali-Mikhail-Haq (AMH), Clayton, Frank, Gumbel-Hougaard (GH), and Joe copulas are employed to accommodate the dependency among marginal distributions. Baseline distributions are modeled semiparametrically by the Piecewise Exponential (PE) distribution and the Bernstein polynomials (BP).

One of the most significant advantages of Model Predictive Control (MPC) is its ability to explicitly incorporate system constraints and actuator specifications. However, a major drawback is the computational cost associated with calculating the optimal control sequence at each sampling time, posing a substantial challenge for real-time implementation in high-order systems with fast dynamics. Additionally, uncertainties are inherently present in dynamic systems, requiring a robust formulation that accounts for these uncertainties.

The design of chemotherapeutic drug carriers requires precise information on their interaction with the plasma membrane since the carriers should be internalized by cells without disrupting or compromising the overall integrity of the membrane. In this study, we employ Langmuir monolayers mimicking the outer leaflet of plasma membranes of healthy and cancerous cells to determine the molecular-level interactions with a water-soluble calixarene derivative, -sulfonic acid calix[4]arene (SCX4), which is promising as drug carrier. The cancer membrane models comprised either 40% 1,2-dipalmitoyl--glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) or 1,2-dioleoyl--glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC), 30% cholesterol (Chol), 20% 1,2-dipalmitoyl--glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DPPE), and 10% 1,2-dipalmitoyl--glycero-3-phospho-l-serine (DPPS).

The role of innate receptors in initiating the early inflammatory response to helminth larval stages in affected tissues during their life cycle within the host remains poorly understood. Given its pivotal role in detecting microbial elements and eliciting immune responses, exploring the NOD1 receptor could offer crucial insights into immune responses to parasitic infections. By using the larval ascariasis model, the acute model for early Ascaris sp.

Background: Dopamine has been widely related to pain modulation, at central and peripheral levels. In this study we aimed to investigate the mechanisms involved in peripheral antinociception, evaluating the interaction between the dopaminergic and endocannabinoid systems in this event.
Methods: Male Swiss mice (30-40 g) were pre-sensitized by administration of the hyperalgesic PGE (2 μg/paw).

Deltamethrin is a pesticide used worldwide with several applications in the control of nuisance arthropods in homes, agriculture, against ectoparasites in dogs and livestock. Recent studies indicate that deltamethrin can induce cardiotoxicity. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the toxicity of deltamethrin in dogs through exposure to commercial collars over 8 months.

Objective: To determine practice patterns in the diagnosis and management of nongestational abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) in women in reproductive years during the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic in Brazil.
Materials And Methods: A web-based survey was conducted to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis and management of women with AUB. Survey elements included treatment location, the use of ultrasonography, laboratory evaluation for iron deficiency and some hormone determinations, and endometrial evaluation by histopathology, as well as the practice of hysteroscopy, hysterectomy and medical therapy including the placement of the 52 mg levonorgestrel-intrauterine system (LNG-IUS).

Pathological transdifferentiation, where differentiated cells aberrantly transform into other cell types that exacerbate disease rather than promote healing, represents a novel and significant concept. This perspective discusses its role and potential targeting in cardiovascular diseases and chronic inflammation. Current therapies mainly focus on mitigating early inflammatory response through proinflammatory cytokines and pathways targeting, including corticosteroids, TNF-α inhibitors, IL-1β monoclonal antibodies and blockers, IL-6 blockers, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), along with modulating innate immune memory (trained immunity).

Purpose: Recent evidences pointed out that the prevalence of comorbidity of restless legs syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease (RLS/WED) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is around 20%. Nonetheless its association factors have not been extensively evaluated after the recent modification in diagnostic criteria. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of RLS/WED and its association factors with OSA in an adult sample.

Schistosoma mansoni represents a significant etiological agent of schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease with a global distribution. Although the Kato-Katz technique is an effective diagnostic tool in areas with a high prevalence of the disease, it lacks sensitivity in regions with lower prevalence. The objective of this study was to identify and validate novel immunogenic peptide targets derived from the S.

For more than 100 years, the infections caused by have been well documented in horses. However, recently, pythiosis was also described in several species, including dogs, cats, cattle, zoo captive animals, and humans. Human pythiosis is a life-threatening infection requiring an early diagnosis for a successful management.

In the 2018 yellow fever (YF) outbreak in Brazil, we generated new transcriptomic data and combined it with clinical and immunological data to decode the pathogenesis of YF. Analyzing 79 patients, we found distinct gene expression patterns between acute YF, other viral infections, and the milder YF-17D vaccine infection. We identified a critical role for low-density, immature neutrophils in severe outcomes, marked by the downregulation of genes essential for neutrophil migration and maturation, such as PADI4, CSF3R, and ICAM1, in deceased patients.

Background: Oral health is recognized as integral to general health and impaired dentition status may affect physical performance among older adults. This study evaluated the longitudinal association between clinical and self-reported oral health measures and physical performance (outcome) in Brazilian older adults.
Methods: This was a longitudinal study that used data from the second (year 2006), third (year 2010) and fourth (year 2015) waves of the Health Well-being and Aging Study conducted in Brazil.
