Predicting enteric methane production from cattle in the tropics.

Animal

September 2020

Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA Dairy Cattle), 36038-330Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Accurate estimates of methane (CH4) production by cattle in different contexts are essential to developing mitigation strategies in different regions. We aimed to: (i) compile a database of CH4 emissions from Brazilian cattle studies, (ii) evaluate prediction precision and accuracy of extant proposed equations for cattle and (iii) develop specialized equations for predicting CH4 emissions from cattle in tropical conditions. Data of nutrient intake, diet composition and CH4 emissions were compiled from in vivo studies using open-circuit respiratory chambers, SF6 technique or the GreenFeed® system.

Unlabelled: Although urinary incontinence (UI) in hospitalized patients is a frequent health problem, research on the subject is limited.

Purpose: A prospective, descriptive study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of UI, care implemented among hospitalized adult patients, and impact of UI on quality of life (QoL) in a large private institution in Brazil.

Methods: All patients admitted during November 2018 who were at least 18 years of age, sufficiently conscious and oriented to answer questions, able to undergo skin inspection, and had the ability to urinate (ie, did not use an indwelling bladder catheter or have a nephrostomy, cystostomy, urostomy, or vesicostomy) were eligible to participate.

Neuropathic pain is a common type of chronic pain caused by trauma or chemotherapy. However, this type of pain is undertreated. TsNTxP is a non-toxic protein isolated from the venom of the scorpion Tityus serrulatus, and it is structurally similar to neurotoxins that interact with voltage-gated sodium channels.

Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of combination treatment of vascular targeted photodynamic therapy and anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 immunotherapy in a mouse model of urothelial carcinoma.

Methods: We used C57BL/6 mice injected with murine bladder 49 cell line. Mice were randomly allocated into four treatment groups: vascular targeted photodynamic therapy only, anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen 4 only, combination therapy and control.

During gait acquisition, children learn to use their changing resources to meet the requirements of the task. Compared to typically developing toddlers (TD), toddlers with Down syndrome (DS) have functionally different musculoskeletal characteristics, such as hypotonia, and joint and ligament laxity, that could produce a reduced passive stiffness. The interplay between this inherently lower passive stiffness and the demands of walking may result in different strategies during gait acquisition.

The main goal of this study is to evaluate potential applications of two zirconia-hydroxyapatite composites, Z4H6 and Z6H4, as bone substitutes. Composite plugs were implanted into the distal femoral metaphysis and also onto the longissimus dorsi of 18 adult mixed-breed dogs in order to assess in vivo biocompatibility by immediate clinical and radiographic evaluation 30, 90, and 120 days after implantation. Radiographic examination revealed radiolucency on the defect site.

Intense mining activities in Minas Gerais State - Brazil brings out tons of waste to the environment. Considerable concentrations of toxic elements penetrate the soil, ground waters and rivers. Following epidemiological studies of gastrointestinal helminthiasis in dairy cattle in Florestal County, Minas Gerais, 80 Swiss and crossbred Zebu x Holstein calves, 8-10-months old, were selected to test the efficacy of three treatment protocols using ivermectin for helminth control. The calves were treated in Brachiaria grass paddocks, naturally infected with Haemonchus, Cooperia, Oesophagostomum and Trichostrongylus species, and then divided into four groups of 20 animals each: group 1 was treated with 200 microg/kg body weight ivermectin in April (at the end of the rainy season) and October (beginning of the rainy season); group 2 was treated in April, August (middle of the dry season) and October; group 3 was treated in April, August, October and December (middle of the rainy season); and group 4 was left untreated as a control. The treatments effectively eliminated the worm burden only in groups 2 and 3 (p < 0.

A cross-sectional case-control study designed to evaluate the role of malnutrition in the association between the intensity of Schistosoma mansoni infection and clinical schistosomiasis, was conducted in an area with both low frequency of infection and low morbidity of schistosomiasis in Brazil. Cases (256) were patients with a positive stool examination for S. mansoni; their geometrical mean number of eggs/gram of feces was 90.

Brazilian army conscripts were vaccinated against American cutaneous leishmaniasis by using nonliving polyvalent promastigote Leish vaccine 5 or Leish vaccine 6 (vaccines with five or six Leishmania stocks) with or without Corynebacterium parvum. No statistically significant differences in lymphocyte stimulation indices were found between vaccinated groups with or without C. parvum, but lymphocyte stimulation indices of all vaccinees were significantly higher (P less than 0.

This case-control study was conducted to assess the risk, among children aged 0-12 years, of developing meningitis tuberculosis (MT) associated with a lack of intradermal BCG vaccination. Cases (45) of MT admitted for treatment at the Fundacao Benjamin Guimaraes Hospital (Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil), from 1975 to 1981, were matched for age at hospitalization, date of hospitalization and nutritional status, with two types of controls--patients with acute diarrhoea (AD) and patients with acute non-tuberculous bacterial pneumonias (BP)--admitted to the same hospital. Vaccination status was ascertained from the patients' medical records.
