Background And Aims: To better understand C4 evolution in monocots, we characterized C3-C4 intermediate phenotypes in the grass genus Homolepis (subtribe Arthropogoninae).

Methods: Carbon isotope ratio (δ13C), leaf gas exchange, mesophyll (M) to bundle sheath (BS) tissue characteristics, organelle size and numbers in M and BS tissue, and tissue distribution of the P-subunit of glycine decarboxylase (GLDP) were determined for five Homolepis species and the C4 grass Mesosetum loliiforme from a phylogenetic sister clade. We generated a transcriptome-based phylogeny for Homolepis and Mesosetum species to interpret physiological and anatomical patterns in an evolutionary context, and to test for hybridization.

Introduction And Objective: p62 is a human multifunctional adaptor protein involved in key cellular processes such as tissue homeostasis, inflammation, and cancer. It acts as a negative regulator of inflammasome complexes. It may thus be considered a good candidate for therapeutic use in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as colitis.

Penile cancer (PeCa) is a rare tumor, generally associated with socioeconomic conditions in low-income countries. Hence, a delay in diagnosis and treatment leads in more advanced tumors, to higher comorbidity, and mortality. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection has been identified as one of the major risk factors for PeCa.

The study of ichthyoplankton is paramount to understanding fish assemblages' reproductive dynamics. DNA metabarcoding has been applied as a rapid, cost-effective, and accurate taxonomy tool, allowing the identification of multiple individuals simultaneously. However, there remain significant challenges when using DNA metabarcoding, such as molecular marker choice according to the taxonomic resolution and length of the fragment to be sequenced, primer bias, incomplete reference databases, and qualitative inference incongruences.

The human activity impact on wild animal populations is indicated by eco-evolutionary and demographic processes, along with their survival and capacity to evolve; consequently, such data can contribute toward enhancing genetic-based conservation programs. In this context, knowledge on the life-history and the eco-evolutionary processes is required to understand extant patterns of population structure in a Neotropical migratory fish that has been threatened due to loss and fragmentation of its natural habitat since 1960s promoted by the expansion of hydroelectric power plant construction programs. This study evaluated the eco-evolutionary parameters that cause oscillations in the demography and structure of populations.

In this work, the synthesis, characterization and photophysical assays of a new -AB-corrole derivative from the naturally occurring quinone are described. β-Lapachone is a naturally occurring quinoidal compound that provides highly fluorescent heterocyclic compounds such as lapimidazoles. The new -AB-corrole compound was obtained from the reaction between 2,3,4,5,6-(pentafluorophenyl)dipyrromethane and the lapimidazole bearing an aldehyde group.

The purpose of this article is to quantify the amount of misclassification of the Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) mortality occurring in hospitals and other health facilities in selected cities in Brazil, discuss potential factors contributing to this misclassification, and consider the implications for vital statistics. Hospital deaths assigned to causes classified as garbage code (GC) COVID-related cases (severe acute respiratory syndrome, pneumonia unspecified, sepsis, respiratory failure and ill-defined causes) were selected in three Brazilian state capitals. Data from medical charts and forensic reports were extracted from standard forms and analyzed by study physicians who re-assigned the underlying cause based on standardized criteria.

Over time, a growing increase in human pollutants in the aquatic environment has been observed. The global presence of residues in water bodies reinforces the need to develop improved methods to detect them and evaluate their ecotoxicological effects in aquatic environments. Thus, this study aimed to present the main assays using Biomphalaria glabrata as a biological model for ecotoxicological studies.

About 10 million new cases of dementia develop worldwide each year, of which up to 70% are attributable to Alzheimer's disease (AD). In addition to the widely known symptoms of memory loss and cognitive impairment, AD patients frequently develop non-cognitive symptoms, referred to as behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSDs). Sleep disorders are often associated with AD, but mood alterations, notably depression and apathy, comprise the most frequent class of BPSDs.

Temporal trends and spatial clusters of gastric cancer mortality in Brazil.

Rev Panam Salud Publica

August 2022

Department of Community Health School of Medicine Federal University of Ceará Fortaleza Brazil Department of Community Health, School of Medicine, Federal University of Ceará, Fortaleza, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze trends and patterns in gastric cancer-related deaths across Brazil from 2000 to 2019, using death certificates as primary data.
  • A significant increase in age-adjusted mortality rates was observed, particularly in the less-developed North and Northeast regions, emphasizing socioeconomic disparities in health outcomes.
  • The findings highlighted specific high-risk areas for gastric cancer-related mortality, necessitating the implementation of targeted health interventions in these regions to address the growing issue.

Objectives: While there are good Budget Impact Analysis (BIA) guidelines, studies still register potential bias. To do this, we compared the results between theoretical and real-world evidence (RWE) expenditures for medicines for Hepatitis C: boceprevir (BOC) and telaprevir (TVR). While both are not currently recommended in treatment guidelines following recent developments, this is an emblematic case because for 4 years these medicines consumed considerable resources.

Accumulating evidence indicates that transient receptor potential (TRP) channels are involved in the pathophysiological process in the heart, and monoterpenes, such as carvacrol, are able to modulate these channels activity. In this article, our purpose was to evaluate the direct cardiac effect of carvacrol on the contractility of cardiomyocytes and isolated right atria from spontaneously hypertensive and Wistar Kyoto rats. In this way, in vitro experiments were used to evaluate the ventricular cardiomyocytes contractility and the Ca2+ transient measuring, in addition to heart rhythm in the right atria.
