Protodioscin is a saponin present in grasses that can lead to losses in animal production. Our hypothesis was that mathematical models can accurately and precisely predict the protodioscin concentration in tropical grasses. We evaluated the ability of four mathematical models to describe the protodioscin concentration in Brachiaria and Panicum cultivars with different regrowth periods.

The Gram-negative, strictly anaerobic bacterium was first isolated from the rumen in 1953 and is common in the mammalian gastrointestinal tract. Its ability to use either lactate or glucose as its major energy sources for growth has been well documented, although it can also ferment amino acids into ammonia and branched-chain fatty acids, which are growth factors for other bacteria. The ruminal abundance of usually increases in animals fed grain-based diets due to its ability to use lactate (the product of rapid ruminal sugar fermentation), especially at a low ruminal pH (<5.

Burn injuries are of serious concern worldwide not only because of the physical impact but also because of severe mental and emotional distress and reduced quality of life. The usual management comprises topical and systemic medications, and supportive care; however, conventional therapy may be expensive and insufficient for many cases. Thus, we describe herein a unique case in which a low-level laser was used concomitantly with the conventional approach for the management of head and neck burn wounds and could improve the patient's clinical condition within a short period.

Thus, this work evaluated using different hydrogels to minimize drought stress in soybean cultivation. The treatments employed two different hydrogels, one already commercialized and the other produced with cashew gum (Anacardium occidentale), five levels (0, 30, 60, 120, and 240 mg pot) of the hydrogels, and two levels of drought stress in sandy soil.

Background: Healthcare-associated infections are among the most common complications during hospitalization. These infections increase morbidity and mortality and they increase length of hospital stay and the cost of healthcare. The aims of our study were to monitor hand hygiene (HH) compliance, HH technique quality and factors related to HH practice among health professionals in a COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

This study examines the impact of particle size on the setting behavior of tricalcium silicate powders. The setting behavior was evaluated using ISO 6876 indentation testing and isothermal induction calorimetry techniques. The objective was to compare the outcomes obtained from these methods and establish a correlation between particle size and setting characteristics.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to analyze the effect of different eccentric tempos on eccentric kinetics and kinematics and the subsequent concentric performance when performing countermovement jumps against different loads.
Methods: After 1-repetition-maximum assessment and 2 familiarization sessions, 13 well-trained participants performed, in randomized order, 12 sets (4 tempos × 3 loads) of 4 repetitions of the loaded countermovement-jump exercise. The eccentric tempos analyzed were 5 and 2 seconds, as fast as possible, and accelerated (ie, without pause between repetitions), while the loads used were 30%, 50%, and 70% of 1-repetition maximum.

Background: Because evolves slowly, transmission clusters often contain multiple individuals with identical consensus genomes, making it difficult to reconstruct transmission chains. Finding additional sources of shared variation could help overcome this problem. Previous studies have reported diversity within infected individuals; however, whether within-host variation improves transmission inferences remains unclear.

This research aimed to evaluate the effect of interdisciplinary educational interventions on children's attitudes, knowledge, preferences, and perceptions about different nutrition labels. Four hundred and ten elementary school children, aged between seven and ten years, participated in the research. The children completed questionnaires on attitudes, knowledge, and preferences about nutrition labeling and on perceived healthiness of a food product considering different types of nutrition labels (Pre-Intervention).

The low-protein, high-carbohydrate (LPHC) diet administered to growing rats soon after weaning, for 15 days, promoted an increase in energy expenditure by uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in interscapular brown adipose tissue, and also due to the occurrence of the browning process in the perirenal white adipose tissue (periWAT). However, we believe that inguinal white adipose tissue (ingWAT) may also contribute to energy expenditure through other mechanisms. Therefore, the aim of this work is to investigate the presence of the futile creatine cycle, and the origin of lipids in ingWAT, since that tissue showed an increase in the lipids content in rats submitted to the LPHC diet for 15 days.

Background: Cutaneous melanoma is characterized by a high risk of metastasis to distant organs and a substantial mortality rate. For planning treatment and assessing outcomes, the Breslow micrometric measurement is critical. The tumor macroscopic dimension is not considered a prognostic parameter in cutaneous melanoma, although there are studies showing that tumor size is an independent prognostic factor for melanoma-specific survival.

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease that has affected more than 350 million people worldwide and can manifest itself in three different forms: cutaneous, mucocutaneous, or visceral. Furthermore, the current treatment options have drawbacks which compromise efficacy and patient compliance. To face this global health concern, new alternatives for the treatment of leishmaniasis have been explored.

A miniaturized and low-cost electrochemical 3D-printed system for rapid and accurate quantification of ethanol content in ethanol fuel using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was developed. The monolithic design of the system incorporates insulating thermoplastic electrode separators, with only the cover being mobile, allowing for easy assembly and handling. The portable device, measuring approximately 26 × 24 mm, has a maximum capacity of 1 mL, making it suitable for lab-on-a-chip and portable analysis.

Trees structure the Earth's most biodiverse ecosystem, tropical forests. The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge.

Background: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of different treatment strategies using a new commercial formulation containing pour-on fluralaner on Rhipicephalus microplus infestation in cattle and in pastures in a tropical climate region where up to five generations of this tick species can occur per year.
Methods: Forty-five naturally infested cattle were divided into three experimental groups: T01, treated with fluralaner (2.5 mg/kg) pour-on every 42 days; T02, the cattle received the first treatment with fluralaner on Day 0 but the next treatment involved a weekly visual evaluation; T03, control, received palliative treatment with a spray formulation when the group mean was ≥ 30 ticks.

The future of energy technology is significantly influenced by hydrogen (H) energy. However, hydrogen energy production through water-splitting entirely depends on the catalyst's performance. Modifying the morphological structure and increasing the number of active sites by changing the metal composition are pivotal factors in enhancing the catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

Changes in pH affect metabolic pathways, primarily by modulating enzyme conformations, which is why a detailed analysis of pH-driven conformational transitions is required to understand the underlying biochemistry of diseases and biological organisms. In this work, we examined the pH-driven conformational dynamics of Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA), within the framework of the Foster Model. Circular Dichroism and Raman Optical Activity showed the conversion of helical into β-rich structures in the acid and basic regions, while an opening of BSA tertiary structure was shown by the upsurging of accessibility of ANS-BSA binding sites and the increasing of random contributions at regions F and B.

Popular medicine has been using oleoresin from several species of copaíba tree for the treatment of various diseases and its clinical administration potentially causes antinociception. Electrical stimulation of ventrolateral (vlPAG) and dorsolateral (dlPAG) columns of the periaqueductal gray matter also causes antinociception. The aim this study was to verify the antinociceptive effect of oleoresin extracted from Copaifera langsdorffii tree and to test the hypothesis that oleoresin-induced antinociception is mediated by µ- and κ-opioid receptors in the vlPAG and dlPAG.
