Optimizing power grids: A valley-filling heuristic for energy-efficient electric vehicle charging.

PLoS One

January 2025

College of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Urbanism and Geography, Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

The expansion of electric vehicles (EVs) challenges electricity grids by increasing charging demand, thereby making Demand-Side Management (DSM) strategies essential to maintaining balance between supply and demand. Among these strategies, the Valley-Filling approach has emerged as a promising method to optimize renewable energy utilization and alleviate grid stress. This study introduces a novel heuristic, Load Conservation Valley-Filling (LCVF), which builds on the Classical and Optimistic Valley-Filling approaches by incorporating dynamic load conservation principles, enabling better alignment of EV charging with grid capacity.

Both perinatal malnutrition and elevated glucocorticoids are pivotal triggers of the growing global pandemic of metabolic diseases. Here, we studied the effects of metabolic stress responsiveness on glucose-insulin homeostasis and pancreatic-islet function in male Wistar offspring whose mothers underwent protein restriction during lactation. During the first two weeks after delivery, lactating dams were fed a low-protein (4% protein, LP group) or normal-protein diet (22.

Introduction: Excess weight during pregnancy is a condition that can affect both mother and fetus, through the maternal-fetal interface, which is constituted by the placenta and umbilical cord. The umbilical vein is responsible for transporting oxygen and nutrients to the fetus, and its proper functioning depends on the integrity of its structure. The remodeling of the umbilical vein represents one of the causes of inadequate transport of nutrients to the fetus, being potentially harmful.

This study assessed the intensity of salt stress in the two tomato varieties by measuring variables associated with the water regime, chlorophyll content, normalized difference vegetation index, gas exchange, and yield. The cultivars Amalia and Claudia, which represent tolerance and susceptibility to salinity, were evaluated. Three treatments were established in plastic pots, using a completely randomized design: T1, saline soil (ECse = 6.

Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a monogenic blood disease with complex and multifactorial pathophysiology. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) could be a candidate for modulating SCA complications, such as priapism, as it has demonstrated an essential role in hematopoiesis, platelet aggregation, and immune responses. We evaluated the association of ECS-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) (FAAH rs324420, MAGL rs604300, CNR1 rs7766029, and CNR2 rs35761398) with priapism in a Brazilian SCA cohort.

Effective Nitrate Electroconversion to Ammonia Using an Entangled CoO/Graphene Nanoribbon Catalyst.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Institute of Chemistry, Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul, Avenida Senador Filinto Muller 1555, Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul 79074-460, Brazil.

There has been huge interest among chemical scientists in the electrochemical reduction of nitrate (NO) to ammonia (NH) due to the useful application of NH in nitrogen fertilizers and fuel. To conduct such a complex reduction reaction, which involves eight electrons and eight protons, one needs to develop high-performance (and stable) electrocatalysts that favor the formation of reaction intermediates that are selective toward ammonia production. In the present study, we developed and applied CoO/graphene nanoribbon (GNR) electrocatalysts with excellent properties for the effective reduction of NO to NH, where NH yield rate of 42.

Department of Ecology and Zoology, Laboratory of Freshwater Biodiversity, Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Florianópolis, SC 88040-900, Brazil.

The frequency and intensity of wildfires have been increasing in many parts of the world, which may result in biodiversity loss. Wildfires can devastate plant communities, generating toxic ash that pollutes watercourses through runoff. However, our understanding of the effects of ash exposure on aquatic biodiversity is still limited.

Polyurethane foams (PFs) are widely used in mattresses, upholstery, and insulation, but disposal is difficult due to the disintegration time and environmental hazards of synthetic polyol. This work investigates a sustainable alternative by replacing poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with corn cob fibers and incorporating antibacterial silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Corn cob fibers and sodium hydroxide-treated fibers were used to make foams, with corn cob fibers substituting PEG at 5-30 wt %.
