To critically analyze the evidence regarding changes in verbal and performance intelligence quotient (IQ) in patients with schizophrenia. An English-language-only search was conducted in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and LILACS databases for articles with study objectives that included Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) assessment of cognitive functions in patients with schizophrenia. Descriptors were defined based on Medical Subject Headings, where associations of psychotic disorders related to the schizophrenia spectrum were suggested, as well as the "Wechsler Scales" descriptor.

Phosphorus (P) imbalances are a recurring issue in cultivated soils with pastures across diverse regions. In addition to P deficiency, the prevalence of excess P in soil has escalated, resulting in damage to pasture yield. In response to this reality, there is a need for well-considered strategies, such as the application of silicon (Si), a known element for alleviating plant stress.

Background: Penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) is a rare disease that is more prevalent in developing countries, such as Brazil, and is linked to poor genital hygiene, which promotes the proliferation of microorganisms. Dysbiosis has an effect on the local immune response, increases the risk of viral infection, and can generate inflammatory processes. Current knowledge of the microbiota found in penile tissues is limited, and the bacterial diversity of the PSCC remains unknown.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a pathology that is characterized by progressive erosion of articular cartilage. In this context, medicinal plants have become relevant tools regarding their potential role in the prevention and treatment of OA, being safe and effective. The aim of this work was investigate the therapeutic efficacy of the ethyl acetate fraction of Bixa orellana leaves (BoEA) and ellagic acid (ElAc) for the therapeutic treatment of OA induced by monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) in rats.

Since it was founded, the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) has been at the forefront of improving pain research, education, and effective pain management in both developed and developing countries. As IASP activities progressed, major differences between the practice of pain management, education, and research in developed countries compared with developing countries were identified. This led to areas of focus by IASP that included pain education to address poor knowledge of pain assessment and treatment, prioritization of pain management by governments and official national legislation and programs, and availability of pain treatments (especially potent analgesics).

Introduction: There is a need to improve knowledge and understanding of the factors associated with mortality from COVID-19 so that managers and decision-makers can implement strategies to mitigate and control the severe forms of the disease. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with deaths from COVID-19 in the state of Maranhão, in northeastern Brazil.

Methodology: This is a cross-sectional and analytical study with patients with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 who died from March 2020 to January 2022.

Background: To promote optimal neuromuscular and cardiovascular gains in older adults, it seems crucial to investigate the effects of different combined training volumes in this population. Thus, the present study aimed to compare the effects of combined muscle power training (MPT) and endurance training (ET) with different volumes on functional and hemodynamic parameters in previously trained older adults.

Methods: Twenty-five older adults were randomly assigned to either the lower-volume group (LVG; n = 13) or the higher-volume group (HVG; n = 12).

Clear cell tumors of the lung (CCTL), or "sugar tumors" of lung, are very uncommon lesions and are mostly benign perivascular epithelioid cell (PEC) tumors with no specific morphologic features. Fewer than 100 cases have been reported; the aggressive nature demonstrated in sporadic reports has rarely been described in the literature. Although the course is generally described as benign, eight reported cases showed malignant behavior.

Article Synopsis
  • Mental disorders, particularly depression, significantly impact public health in low- and middle-income countries, affecting around 80% of the population.
  • A cross-sectional study in Brazil analyzed data from the 2019 National Health Survey to identify factors associated with depression in adults, focusing on socioeconomic, lifestyle, and demographic variables.
  • The findings revealed that factors such as age, race, sex, self-reported health, certain health conditions, and lifestyle behaviors were linked to depression, suggesting that targeted public health strategies are needed to address these issues.

Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by protozoa of the genus . Treatment options are limited, and there are frequent cases of treatment failure and clinical relapse. To understand these phenomena better, a systematic review was conducted, considering studies published between 1990 and 2021 in Portuguese, English, and Spanish.

Leishmaniasis is caused by protozoans of the genus , and its treatment is highly toxic, leading to treatment discontinuation and the emergence of resistant strains. In this study, we assessed the leishmanicidal activity and chemical composition of red propolis collected from the Amazon-dominated region of northern Tocantins State, Brazil. The MTT assay was employed to determine the samples' activity against promastigotes and their cytotoxicity against RAW macrophages.

Background: Chronic low back pain (LBP) is defined as pain lasting longer than 3 months and is one of the conditions with the most significant social impact. Treatment is complex and includes proliferative agents used in prolotherapy. The mechanism is not known, but osmotic agents (hypertonic solutions of dextrose or glucose) cause cellular rupture and an inflammatory response that releases cytokines and growth factors that lead to scarring and reinnervation.

Article Synopsis
  • Feedlot finishing of goats is becoming more popular, but using ingredients like corn and soybean can hurt the economic benefits; therefore, agroindustry coproducts like crude glycerin are being explored as alternatives.
  • A study involving 32 castrated crossbred Boer goats examined the effects of diets with varying levels of crude glycerin on their metabolism over 69 days and found no significant impact on serum urea levels or metabolic profiles.
  • However, high levels of crude glycerin (which contained some methanol) negatively affected liver tissue in the goats, suggesting that using glycerin with lower methanol content is a better option for their diets.

Introduction: This study aimed to assess the canal transportation with 6 preparation systems.

Methods: Sixty curved mesial roots of mandibular molars were scanned, and their root canals (n = 20 per group) were prepared with XP-endo Shaper, BioRace, ProTaper Next, Twisted File Adaptive, Reciproc, or Reciproc Blue systems. After preparation, a new scan was conducted, and transportation was determined by comparing the geometric center of the canal in 13,542 cross-sectional slices.

Theoretical and micromagnetic simulation studies of magnetic nanospheres with vortex configurations suggest that such nanostructured materials have technological advantages over conventional nanosystems for applications based on high-power-rate absorption and subsequent emission. However, full experimental evidence of magnetic vortex configurations in spheres of submicrometer size is still lacking. Here, we report the microwave irradiation fabrication of FeO nanospheres and establish their magnetic vortex configuration based on experimental results, theoretical analysis, and micromagnetic simulations.
