Hyperglucagonemia has been implicated in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes (T2D). In contrast to β-cells, studies on the function of the pancreatic α-cell in T2D are scarce. Consequently, the processes underlying hyperglucagonemia and α-cell dysfunction are largely unknown, limiting the appropriate design of specific pharmacological and therapeutic strategies.

The epidemic of obesity has increased worldwide and is associated with comorbidities such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In this context, strategies that modulate body weight and improve glycemic metabolism have increased, and bariatric surgeries such as Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) have been highlighted in obesity treatment. However, the mechanism by which SG reduces body weight and improves glycemic control remains unknown.

The isolation and study of fungi within specific contexts yield valuable insights into the intricate relationships between fungi and ecosystems. Unlike culture-independent approaches, cultivation methods are advantageous in this context because they provide standardized replicates, specific species isolation, and easy sampling. This study aimed to understand the ecological process using a microcosm system with pesticide concentrations similar to those found in the soil, in contrast to high doses, from the isolation of the enriched community.

Bio-energy systems with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) will be essential if countries are to meet the gas emission reduction targets established in the 2015 Paris Agreement. This study seeks to carry out a thermodynamic optimization and analysis of a BECCS technology for a typical Brazilian cogeneration plant. To maximize generated net electrical energy (MWe) and carbon dioxide CO capture (Mt/year), this study evaluated six cogeneration systems integrated with a chemical absorption process using MEA.

In this cross-sectional study, we determined the relative impact of long-term occupational exposure to pesticides on physical performance and perception of tiredness. Experimental data was collected in locus from agricultural communities and included surveys to assess the duration of exposure to pesticides, social status, habitual physical activity levels, presence of common mental disorders (CMD), and self-reported tiredness. Plasmatic cholinesterase (PChE), body composition and traditional functional performance tests (Handgrip strength-HGS; Time up and go-TUG; and Sit-to-stand-STS) were obtained.

Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) restores glucose homeostasis in obese mice and humans. In addition, the increased fibroblast growth factor (FGF)15/19 circulating level postsurgery has been implicated in this effect. However, the impact of FGF15/19 on pancreatic islets remains unclear.

Biogas, produced in anaerobic digestion, is a sustainable alternative for generating energy from agro-industrial and municipal waste. Information from the microbiota active in the process expands the possibilities for technological innovation. In this study, taxonomic annotations, and functional prediction of the microbial community of the inoculum of two processes were carried out: an industrial unit (pilot-scale urban solid waste plant-IU) and a laboratory-scale reactor fed with swine and cattle waste (LS).

is a Gram-negative, immobile, aerobic nosocomial opportunistic coccobacillus that causes pneumonia, septicemia, and urinary tract infections in immunosuppressed patients. There are no commercially available alternative antimicrobials, and multi-drug resistance is an urgent concern that requires emergency measures and new therapeutic strategies. This study evaluated a multi-drug-resistant whole-cell vaccine, inactivated and adsorbed on an aluminum hydroxide-chitosan (mAhC) matrix, in an sepsis model in immunosuppressed mice by cyclophosphamide (CY).

Traditional transcriptomics approaches have been used to identify candidate genes affecting economically important livestock traits. Regulatory variants affecting these traits, however, remain under covered. Genomic regions showing allele-specific expression (ASE) are under the effect of -regulatory variants, being useful for improving the accuracy of genomic selection models.

The use of formulations containing botanical products for controlling insects that vector human and animal diseases has increased in recent years. Plant extracts seem to offer fewer risks to the environment and to human health without reducing the application strategy's efficacy when compared to synthetic and conventional insecticides and repellents. Here, we evaluated the potential of extracts obtained from caninana, (L.

HMF (hydroxymethylfurfural), a compound that occurs naturally in food, is derived from the dehydration of monosaccharides (glucose and fructose) in products subjected to high-temperature treatments or to aging processes. HMF can be obtained by acid-catalyzed dehydration of lignocellulosic biomasses such as sugarcane bagasse and other agricultural residues. In this work, analytical quantification of HMF and furfural (the main co-product) was performed using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD).

Urban waste (UW) has caused a series of problems regarding its management. UW comprises domestic, hospital and industrial residues, which makes the destination of this waste a matter of concern, as it may contain a variety of highly toxic environmental polluters. Deactivated dumps can represent sources of contamination of the environment that surround these deposits, harming rivers and inhabiting organisms.
