Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of the proliferation marker Ki67 in predicting postoperative outcomes for pituitary adenoma patients, focusing on tumor recurrence and regrowth.
  • A cohort of 52 patients who underwent surgery was analyzed, with 23 showing high Ki67 expression (≥3%) and the rest showing low (0-2.9%).
  • The findings suggest that while recurrence rates were similar for both groups, the regrowth of tumors was significantly higher in patients with Ki67 ≥3%, indicating the need for closer monitoring in these cases after surgery.

Malignant glioblastoma (GB) treatment consists of resection surgery followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy (CT). Despite several implications, such as systemic toxicity and low efficacy, CT continues to be used for GB therapy. Aiming to overcome the blood-brain barrier (BBB) limitations, one of the most promising approaches is the use of drug delivery systems (DDS) to treat the cancer cells in situ.

The Lazy Life of Lipid-Linked Oligosaccharides in All Life Domains.

J Chem Inf Model

February 2020

Centro de Biotecnologia , Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul , Porto Alegre , RS 91509-900 , Brazil.

Lipid-linked oligosaccharides (LLOs) play an important role in the N-glycosylation pathway as the donor substrate of oligosaccharyltransferases (OSTs), which are responsible for the transfer of glycan chains onto a nascent polypeptide. The lipid component of LLO in both eukarya and archaea consists of a dolichol, and an undecaprenol in prokarya, whereas the number of isoprene units may change between species. Given the potential relevance of LLOs and their related enzymes to diverse biotechnological applications, obtaining reliable LLO models from distinct domains of life could support further studies on complex formation and their processing by OSTs, as well as protein engineering on such systems.

The adenosine pathway plays a key role in modulating immune responses in physiological and pathological conditions. Physiologically, anti-inflammatory effects of adenosine balance pro-inflammatory adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), protecting tissues from damage caused by activated immune cells. Pathologically, increased adenosine monophosphatase (AMPase) activity in tumors leads to increased adenosine production, generating a deeply immunosuppressed microenvironment and promoting cancer progression.

Sexuality in women with endometriosis: a critical narrative review.

Minerva Med

February 2020

Department of Neurosciences, Rehabilitation, Ophthalmology, Genetics, Maternal and Child Health (DiNOGMI), University of Genoa, Genoa, Italy.

Endometriosis is a chronic gynecological disease that generally affects young and sexually active women in different stages of their development and sexual life. Because endometriosis affects about 5-10% of women in reproductive age, it is possible to estimate that about 2-4% of those who are sexually active may suffer from sexual dysfunction caused by this disease. Surgical and pharmacological treatments of endometriosis can improve the patient's sexual function in the medium and long term, but not necessarily lead to a definitive resolution of the sexual issue.
