The importance of the One Health concept in attempting to deal with the increasing levels of multidrug-resistant bacteria in both human and animal health is a challenge for the scientific community, policymakers, and the industry. The discovery of the plasmid-borne mobile colistin resistance () in 2015 poses a significant threat because of the ability of these plasmids to move between different bacterial species through horizontal gene transfer. In light of these findings, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that countries implement surveillance strategies to detect the presence of plasmid-mediated colistin-resistant microorganisms and take suitable measures to control and prevent their dissemination.

The evolution of venom and the selection pressures that act on toxins have been increasingly researched within toxinology in the last two decades, in part due to the exceptionally high rates of diversifying selection observed in animal toxins. In 2015, Sungar and Moran proposed the 'two-speed' model of toxin evolution linking evolutionary age of a group to the rates of selection acting on toxins but due to a lack of data, mammals were not included as less than 30 species of venomous mammal have been recorded, represented by elusive species which produce small amounts of venom. Due to advances in genomics and transcriptomics, the availability of toxin sequences from venomous mammals has been increasing.

Two new Cu(II) complexes based on 4-(arylchalcogenyl)-1H-pyrazoles monodentate bis(ligand) containing selenium or sulfur groups (2a and 2b) have been synthesized and characterized by IR spectroscopy, high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and by X-ray crystallography. In the effort to propose new applications for the biomedical area, we evaluated the antioxidant activity and cytotoxicity of the newly synthesized complexes. The antioxidant activity of the Cu(II) complexes (2a - 2b) were assessed through their ability to inhibit the formation of reactive species (RS) induced by sodium azide and to scavenge the synthetic radicals 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS).

Standard chemotherapy for early breast cancer consists generally of an anthracycline - taxane - based regimen, preferably in sequence. Anthracyclines are among the most active cytotoxic drugs against breast cancer. Nevertheless, benefits attained by the use of the more potent anthracycline schedules must be balanced against increased short - and long - term toxicity, and treatment options must be individualized for each patient.

Article Synopsis
  • Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) plays a crucial role in cancer progression, invasion, and resistance to therapy, making it an important target for cancer research.
  • The CD73 enzyme has been linked to EMT, as it produces adenosine, which influences cell adhesion and migration, as well as having immunosuppressive effects.
  • An analysis of RNA sequencing data identified a strong correlation between EMT scores and the expression of CD73 and CD39 in various cancers, especially prostate adenocarcinoma, indicating that the interplay between EMT and the adenosine signaling pathway varies by tumor context and could lead to new treatment approaches.

Clinical profile and outcome of recurrent infective endocarditis.

Heart

October 2022

Service de Cardiologie, Insuffisance Cardiaque et Valvulopathie, Hôpital de la Timone, Marseille, France.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the clinical course and outcomes of patients with recurrent versus first-episode infective endocarditis (IE), using data from the EURO-ENDO registry.
  • A total of 3106 patients were analyzed, revealing that while patients with recurrent IE had a different profile and valve involvement, there were no significant differences in mortality rates between the two groups.
  • Both types of IE shared similar predictors for poor outcomes, suggesting that treatment approaches may need to be similarly aggressive regardless of the patient's history with the disease.
