  • Hearing is crucial for newborn development, and Brazil's Universal Neonatal Hearing Screening (UNHS) aims to detect hearing loss early to support children's hearing health, especially in relation to STIs like congenital syphilis and HIV.
  • A study from two maternity hospitals in Greater Florianópolis analyzed 1,211 newborns referred for hearing retests between 2018 and 2022, revealing that 283 had congenital syphilis or HIV, with congenital syphilis being the most common.
  • UNHS is effective in monitoring newborn hearing health, showing that most infants passed retests, underscoring the importance of retesting and public health initiatives in improving neonatal health outcomes.

  • Remimazolam is a new anesthetic agent developed to replace propofol, which has notable hemodynamic effects that may pose risks during surgery.
  • A systematic review of 16 clinical trials involving 1951 patients assessed the hemodynamic impacts of remimazolam compared to propofol, revealing that remimazolam leads to lower instances of intraoperative hypotension, bradycardia, and reduced need for vasoactive drugs.
  • The findings suggest that remimazolam has a safer and more favorable side effect profile than propofol during general anesthesia, making it a promising alternative.

Electronic address:

A Randomized Controlled Trial involving 158 Brazilian medical and nursing students assessed one of three conditions over an 8-week period: 1) a circuit training protocol (CTG); 2) a yoga protocol (YG); or 3) no intervention (CG). The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of circuit training and yoga protocols in reducing perceived mental stress and examining their effects on serum cortisol levels, as well as on traditional cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs), during an academic semester. Mental stress was measured using self-reported stress questionnaires.

Electronic address:

Biodegradable starch foam trays offer an eco-friendly substitute for petroleum-based single-use packaging, notably polystyrene foams. However, they lack flexibility, tensile strength, and water-sensitivity, addressable through lignocellulosic reinforcement. This study aimed to develop biodegradable starch foam trays filled with different food-chain side streams for sustainable alternative packaging.

The compound -(3-(phenylselanyl)prop-2-yn-1-yl)benzamide (SePB), which combines a selenium atom and a benzamide nucleus in an organic structure, has demonstrated a fast antidepressant-like effect in mice. This action is influenced by the serotonergic system and represents a promising development in the search for novel antidepressant drugs to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), which often resists conventional treatments. This study aimed to further explore the mechanism underlying the antidepressant-like effect of SePB by investigating the involvement of the dopaminergic and noradrenergic systems in the tail suspension test (TST) in mice and evaluating its pharmacokinetic profile in silico.

Rationale: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) significantly impairs the quality of life for those affected. While the exact causes of MDD are not fully understood, the deficit of monoamines, especially serotonin and noradrenaline, is widely accepted. Resistance to long-term treatments and adverse effects are often observed, highlighting the need for new pharmacological therapies.

Here, we evaluated the influence of outdoor environmental conditions (synoptic weather conditions) on human thermal discomfort in the five macro-regions of Pelotas city, located in the southernmost region of Brazil. To do this, meteorological sensors (HOBO MX2301A) were installed outside the residences to measure the air temperature, dew point temperature, and relative humidity between 18 January and 20 August 2019. Two well-established simplified biometeorological indices were examined seasonally: (i) humidex for the summer months and (ii) effective temperature as a function of wind for the autumn and winter months.

Electronic address:

The serotonin type 4 receptor (5-HTR)shows promise as a target for treating major depressive disorder (MDD). Studies have demonstrated that 5-HTR agonists have a faster antidepressant-like effect compared to conventional medications. Developing drugs that modulate this receptor could lead to faster and more effective MDD treatments.

The word sarcopenia derives from the Greek terms "sarx" for meat and "penia" for loss, thus being used to define reductions in muscle mass, muscle strength, and lower physical performance that compromise, mainly, the elderly population. Its high negative impact on patients' quality of life encourages the production and publication of new studies that seek to find methods to prevent and reverse cases of loss of muscle mass and strength. Furthermore, the high prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is closely related to its pathophysiology, which consists of a state of increased protein catabolism and decreased muscle tissue synthesis.

In this study, the kinetic mechanism of adsorption and desorption, as well as the equilibrium isotherms, of four metallic ions (Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn) mono and multicomponent were investigated. The biosorbent used was produced from Jerivá (Syagrus romanzoffiana-commonly known as queen palm) coconut. A kinetic model that considers macropore diffusion as a control step was solved.

The current Brazilian copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) prevention values (PV) for soil quality do not take into account the ecotoxicological impacts on soil organisms, which suggests these guiding values may not be protective of soil ecological trophic levels. This study assessed the acute (mortality) and chronic toxicity (reproduction), as well as the cumulative (bioaccumulation) potential of Cu and Zn (pseudo-total and available fractions) for earthworms Eisenia andrei in a Tropical Artificial Soil (TAS) and two tropical field soils (Oxisol and Alfisol). Toxicity data based on pseudo-total fractions were compared to PV.

Graduate Program in Environmental Science and Technology, PPGCTA, Federal University of Fronteira Sul (UFFS), Campus Erechim, Km 72, RS 135, CEP 99.700-000, Erechim, Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil.

Significant amounts of mining tailings are generated and disposed of every year in dams, leading to potentially serious environmental and safety problems. To identify alternatives for the disposal of these wastes, research works involving their potential application as precursors in the development of alkaline-activated materials have been published in recent years. In this context, the objective of this paper is to present an overview of the main contributions already made on the subject, identified through a bibliometric review and content analysis in the Scopus and Web of Science databases.
