Temporal Analysis and Spatial Distribution of Mortality Related to Head and Neck Cancer in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil.

To analyze mortality from head and neck cancer (HNC) in the State of Santa Catarina from 1979 to 2023. Ecological study of data available in the Mortality Atlas of the National Cancer Institute and in the Mortality Information System. Approximately 13,309 deaths due to HNC were recorded in the Mortality Atlas, considering the period from 1979 to 2021 and 11,027 deaths recorded in SIM in the period from 1996 to 2023.

Extract of Araçá-Boi and Its Major Phenolic Compound, Trans-Cinnamic Acid, Reduce Viability and Inhibit Migration of Human Metastatic Melanoma Cells.

Cutaneous melanoma is an aggressive type of skin cancer that is recognized for its high metastatic potential and the challenges it presents in its treatment. There has been increasing interest in plant extracts and their potential applications in melanoma. The present study aimed to investigate the content of individual phenolic compounds in araçá-boi extract, evaluate their antioxidant activity, and explore their effects on cell viability, migration properties, oxidative stress levels, and protein expression in the human metastatic melanoma cell line SK-MEL-28.

Effects of circuit training and Yoga on biochemical and psychological responses to stress and cardiovascular markers: A randomized clinical trial with nursing and medical students in Southern Brazil.

A Randomized Controlled Trial involving 158 Brazilian medical and nursing students assessed one of three conditions over an 8-week period: 1) a circuit training protocol (CTG); 2) a yoga protocol (YG); or 3) no intervention (CG). The objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of circuit training and yoga protocols in reducing perceived mental stress and examining their effects on serum cortisol levels, as well as on traditional cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs), during an academic semester. Mental stress was measured using self-reported stress questionnaires.

Biodegradable starch foams reinforced by food-chain side streams.

Biodegradable starch foam trays offer an eco-friendly substitute for petroleum-based single-use packaging, notably polystyrene foams. However, they lack flexibility, tensile strength, and water-sensitivity, addressable through lignocellulosic reinforcement. This study aimed to develop biodegradable starch foam trays filled with different food-chain side streams for sustainable alternative packaging.

Dopaminergic Modulation and Computational ADMET Insights for the Antidepressant-like Effect of -(3-(Phenylselanyl)prop-2-yn-1-yl)benzamide.

The compound -(3-(phenylselanyl)prop-2-yn-1-yl)benzamide (SePB), which combines a selenium atom and a benzamide nucleus in an organic structure, has demonstrated a fast antidepressant-like effect in mice. This action is influenced by the serotonergic system and represents a promising development in the search for novel antidepressant drugs to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), which often resists conventional treatments. This study aimed to further explore the mechanism underlying the antidepressant-like effect of SePB by investigating the involvement of the dopaminergic and noradrenergic systems in the tail suspension test (TST) in mice and evaluating its pharmacokinetic profile in silico.

Rationale: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) significantly impairs the quality of life for those affected. Analysis of thermal discomfort associated with synoptic conditions in the city of Pelotas, southernmost region of Brazil.

Here, we evaluated the influence of outdoor environmental conditions (synoptic weather conditions) on human thermal discomfort in the five macro-regions of Pelotas city, located in the southernmost region of Brazil. To do this, meteorological sensors (HOBO MX2301A) were installed outside the residences to measure the air temperature, dew point temperature, and relative humidity between 18 January and 20 August 2019. Two well-established simplified biometeorological indices were examined seasonally: (i) humidex for the summer months and (ii) effective temperature as a function of wind for the autumn and winter months.

This study aimed to assess reactive oxygen species (ROS), non-enzymatic antioxidant reduced glutathione (GSH), and D-dimer levels in COVID-19 patients upon admission, examining their association with mortality outcomes. Data was collected from the medical records of 170 patients hospitalized in a referral hospital unit between March 2020 and December 2021.

Association of occupational exposure to pesticides with overweight in farmers in Southern Brazil.

Introduction: Exposure to pesticides may be related to overweight and associated comorbidities. The aim of this work was to evaluate occupational exposure to pesticides, overweight and associated comorbidities among farmers in Southern Brazil.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included a random sample of 257 farmers, living in the municipality of Mafra and Planalto, southern Brazil.

Physical exercise as a modulator of the purinergic system in the control of sarcopenia in individuals with chronic kidney disease on hemodialysis.

The word sarcopenia derives from the Greek terms "sarx" for meat and "penia" for loss, thus being used to define reductions in muscle mass, muscle strength, and lower physical performance that compromise, mainly, the elderly population. Its high negative impact on patients' quality of life encourages the production and publication of new studies that seek to find methods to prevent and reverse cases of loss of muscle mass and strength. Furthermore, the high prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is closely related to its pathophysiology, which consists of a state of increased protein catabolism and decreased muscle tissue synthesis.

Kinetic modeling of the adsorption and desorption of metallic ions present in effluents using the biosorbent obtained from Syagrus romanzoffiana.

In this study, the kinetic mechanism of adsorption and desorption, as well as the equilibrium isotherms, of four metallic ions (Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn) mono and multicomponent were investigated. The biosorbent used was produced from Jerivá (Syagrus romanzoffiana-commonly known as queen palm) coconut. A kinetic model that considers macropore diffusion as a control step was solved.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Cunila spicata Benth. Is a creeping and aromatic plant that has an ethnopharmacological indication in the southern region of Brazil, in the Araucaria Forest biome. It's used as an alternative therapy for respiratory diseases for men and animals since the "tropeirista" movement in colonial Brazil.

Are the Brazilian prevention values for copper and zinc in soils suitable for protecting earthworms against metal toxicity?

The current Brazilian copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) prevention values (PV) for soil quality do not take into account the ecotoxicological impacts on soil organisms, which suggests these guiding values may not be protective of soil ecological trophic levels. This study assessed the acute (mortality) and chronic toxicity (reproduction), as well as the cumulative (bioaccumulation) potential of Cu and Zn (pseudo-total and available fractions) for earthworms Eisenia andrei in a Tropical Artificial Soil (TAS) and two tropical field soils (Oxisol and Alfisol). Toxicity data based on pseudo-total fractions were compared to PV.

Mining tailings and alkali activation: a comprehensive bibliometric review.

Significant amounts of mining tailings are generated and disposed of every year in dams, leading to potentially serious environmental and safety problems. To identify alternatives for the disposal of these wastes, research works involving their potential application as precursors in the development of alkaline-activated materials have been published in recent years. In this context, the objective of this paper is to present an overview of the main contributions already made on the subject, identified through a bibliometric review and content analysis in the Scopus and Web of Science databases.

Introduction: Gastric cancer is the fourth leading cause of neoplastic morbidity worldwide, and its pathogenesis has been related to genetic and epigenetic alterations in cell cycle regulatory genes, such as p16.

Objectives: This systematic review was developed to investigate the association of the p16 gene promoter methylation with oncogenesis and the progression of gastric carcinomas.

Methodology: MEDLINE and Scopus databases were searched for relevant subsidiary studies, with the publication until July 2021 and without language restriction.

(Herb mate) is a native plant from South America, widely consumed through the infusion of dried leaves. The presence of antioxidant properties in herb mate may be relevant and contribute to evaluating the effect of its compounds against oxidative stress, which could cause neurodegenerative diseases. Despite having health benefits, there are reports of the presence of heavy metals in extracts obtained from the infusion.

PRIMARY CUTANEOUS ADENOID CYSTIC CARCINOMA IN THE TRUNK: CASE REPORT AND LITERATURE REVIEW.

Primary cystic adenoid skin carcinoma is a rare and poorly documented neoplasm in literature worldwide, with just over 250 reports. This work describes a 52-year-old male patient, with no comorbidities, who presented this neoplasm in nodular format in the posterior thoracic region, associated with localized pain and erythema - symptoms that led him to seek medical help. The clinical findings, differential diagnosis and treatment particularities were reviewed and correlated with the clinical case.
