The regioselective synthesis of functionalized naphthoquinones the formation and capture of naphthoquinonynes has been used to prepare trypanocidal compounds. The target compounds are functionalized on the aromatic ring, leaving the quinoidal ring intact. Using this technique, eighteen functionalized naphthoquinones were succesfull obtained, divided in two main groups: the first scope using -nucleophiles, and the second scope using pyridine -oxides, with yields up to 74%.

Textile wastewater is commonly released into water bodies without appropriated treatment, resulting in environmental damages. Processes involving separation and adsorption using nanomagnetic supports have been considered a promising alternative to address this concern. However, challenges concerning the low stability of nanoparticles and the reproducibility of experiments make their large-scale application difficult.

Background: We estimate work loss and economic costs due to mental and substance use disorders in the economically active population of the São Paulo Metropolitan Area, Brazil.

Methods: The São Paulo Megacity Mental Health Survey assessed a population-based sample of 3,007 economically active residents using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview 3.0 and the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2 to investigate, respectively, 12-month psychiatric disorders, work performance, and economic costs.

Article Synopsis
  • Pharmaceutical services in Brazil aim to enhance drug access and quality, focusing on high-cost biological drugs for psoriatic arthritis (PsA) that can significantly improve patients’ lives, though not all patients meet their therapeutic goals.
  • A study conducted in Belo Horizonte assessed medication adherence and persistence among PsA patients using anti-TNF drugs, tracking outcomes over 12 months while identifying factors influencing these metrics.
  • Of the 197 patients, 74.6% showed medication adherence and 72.1% persistence, with higher rates observed in those treated with infliximab; improved outcomes were linked to lower disease activity and non-white race, among other factors.

Ethnic-racial classification criteria are widely recognized to vary according to historical, cultural and political contexts. In Brazil, the strong influence of individual socio-economic factors on race/colour self-classification is well known. With the expansion of genomic technologies, the use of genomic ancestry has been suggested as a substitute for classification procedures such as self-declaring race, as if they represented the same concept.

Low Doses of G-CSF Prevent Cerebral Infarction and Maintain Muscle Strength in an Experimental Model of Global Ischemic Stroke.

Curr Pharm Biotechnol

December 2018

Carlos Alberto Redins Cell Ultrastructure Laboratory (LUCCAR) and Tissue Engineering Core, Department of Morphology/ Health Sciences Center, Federal University of Espirito Santo (UFES), Vitoria, ES, Brazil.

Background: Stroke is a major cause of severe and long-term disability in adult individuals. Treatment of this disease is limited by the narrow therapeutic window in which intervention is crucial. An alternative therapy for stroke could be cellular growth factors, which participate in several pathways that mediate neuronal cell death.

Mangroves of the semiarid Caatinga region of northeastern Brazil are being rapidly converted to shrimp pond aquaculture. To determine ecosystem carbon stocks and potential greenhouse gas emissions from this widespread land use, we measured carbon stocks of eight mangrove forests and three shrimp ponds in the Acaraú and Jaguaribe watersheds in Ceará state, Brazil. The shrimp ponds were paired with adjacent intact mangroves to ascertain carbon losses and potential emissions from land conversion.

A simple and straightforward method using microwave-assisted reactions is presented for the functionalization of graphene oxide with aromatic and non-aromatic amines, notedly dibenzylamine (DBA), -phenylenediamine (PPD), diisopropylamine (DPA) and piperidine (PA). The as-synthesized amine-functionalized graphene oxide materials (amine-GO) were characterized using spectroscopic techniques including XRD, FTIR, C NMR, XPS, TEM for imaging and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The characterization confirmed the functionalization for all amines, reaching relatively high surface nitrogen atomic concentrations of up to 8.

Background: The electrocardiogram (ECG) is widely used in population-based studies. However, there are few studies on electrocardiographic findings in Latin America and in Brazil. The Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) comprised 15,105 participants (35-74 years) from six Brazilian capitals.

Immunomodulatory activity of Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom on human T lymphocytes.

J Venom Anim Toxins Incl Trop Dis

November 2015

Department of Clinical Analyses, Toxicology and Food Sciences, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo (USP), Avenida do Café, s/n, Ribeirão Preto, SP CEP 14040-903 Brazil.

Background: Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom (TsV) contains toxins that act on K(+) and Na(+) channels and account for the venom's toxic effects. TsV can activate murine peritoneal macrophages, but its effects on human lymphocytes have been poorly investigated. Considering that lymphocytes may play an important role in envenomation, we assessed whether TsV affects the expression of phenotypic (CD3, CD4, and CD8) and activation (CD69, CD25, and HLA-DR) markers, cell proliferation, and cytokine production in peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Department of Molecular Medicine/Institute of Biotechnology, University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, STRF, Room 225, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, 78229 TX USA ; Cancer Therapy and Research Center, University of Texas Health Science Center, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, 78229 TX USA ; Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, University of Texas Health Science Center, 7703 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, 78229 TX USA.

Background: Recent genome-wide analysis has shown that DNA methylation spans long stretches of chromosome regions consisting of clusters of contiguous CpG islands or gene families. Hypermethylation of various gene clusters has been reported in many types of cancer. In this study, we conducted methyl-binding domain capture (MBDCap) sequencing (MBD-seq) analysis on a breast cancer cohort consisting of 77 patients and 10 normal controls, as well as a panel of 38 breast cancer cell lines.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the early effect of the endurance training (ET) on systolic blood pressure (SBP), heart rate (HR) and rate pressure-product (RPP) after acute cigarette smoke exposure. Twenty male Wistar rats were randomly allocated into two groups: trained (TEx; n = 10) and control (CEx; n = 10), exposed to smoke. TEx rats undertook ET during 2 weeks (swimming, 5 days/week; 1 h/session) and CEx group was kept in sedentary lifestyle.
