December 2024

Innovation Center in Salivary Diagnostics and Nanobiotechnology, Department of Physiology, Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Federal University of Uberlandia (UFU), Uberlandia, MG, Brazil. Electronic address:

The non-invasive detection of crack/cocaine and other bioactive compounds from its pyrolysis in saliva can provide an alternative for drug analysis in forensic toxicology. Therefore, a highly sensitive, fast, reagent-free, and sustainable approach with a non-invasive specimen is relevant in public health. In this animal model study, we evaluated the effects of exposure to smoke crack cocaine on salivary flow, salivary gland weight, and salivary composition using Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy.

Neonatal Clinical Assessment of the Puppy and Kitten: How to Identify Newborns at Risk?

Animals (Basel)

November 2024

Veterinary Neonatology Research Group, Department of Veterinary Clinic, School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science, São Paulo State University (UNESP), Botucatu 18618-970, SP, Brazil.

Neonatal puppies and kittens have physiological and anatomical characteristics that differ from those of adult animals, which impacts the interpretation of physical examination and complementary tests. The veterinarian must be familiar with the clinical, laboratory, and imaging aspects observed in neonates. It is necessary to thoroughly evaluate the litter and the mother to notice the most subtle signs of illness and advise the owner to constantly monitor the newborns, quickly sending them to specialized care.

: The loss of teeth in the posterior maxillary region often leads to significant alveolar bone resorption and maxillary sinus pneumatization, complicating dental implant placement. Maxillary sinus grafting, typically using autogenous bone, is a common solution. However, autogenous bone grafts require additional surgical procedures, leading to increased morbidity.

Article Synopsis
  • Adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) tend to be less active and more sedentary compared to their peers, which can impact their overall health and well-being.
  • A study involving 15 teenagers with ambulatory CP participated in a 12-week mixed-method exercise program that included both in-person and online activities, focusing on enhancing their physical fitness and mental health.
  • Results showed improvements in muscular strength, flexibility, aerobic endurance, and positive changes in participants' perceptions of depression, anxiety, and stress, indicating that the program was effective and well-suited to their needs.

Introduction: Systematic reviews and meta-analyses point to the benefits of physical exercise for adolescents with cerebral palsy, improving physical conditioning, muscle strength, balance, and walking speed. However, given the high number of reviews that include randomized and non-randomized studies, it is increasingly necessary to assess the methodological quality of these reviews. This scoping review investigated the methodological quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses on the effects of physical exercise in adolescents with cerebral palsy to elucidate the methodological limitations of the research and the priorities to be observed in future research.

Susceptibility to cervical cancer has been associated with Toll-like receptors (TLRs), which is an important component of innate immunity. According to previous studies, polymorphisms in TLRs genes can affect immune response pathways and lead to the development of cervical cancer. The present study aims to evaluate the functionality of polymorphisms in TLR1, TLR4 and TLR9 genes and their associations with cervical cancer.

Article Synopsis
  • Accurately measuring how volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted from porous materials into the air is complicated due to the effects of the material's characteristics and the sampling device's settings.
  • This study aimed to see how different configurations of a commonly used sampling device, the flux chamber, affect the measurement of VOC emissions from three types of porous media, focusing on factors like air flow rate and media thickness.
  • The findings revealed that air flow rate is the most critical factor influencing emission rates, with variations in media properties also affecting gas transportation, which is essential for creating effective study designs for complex sources like biosolids.

In this study, we applied a multivariate logistic regression model to identify deforested areas and evaluate the current effects on environmental variables in the Brazilian state of Rondônia, located in the southwestern Amazon region using data from the MODIS/Terra sensor. The variables albedo, temperature, evapotranspiration, vegetation index, and gross primary productivity were analyzed from 2000 to 2022, with surface type data from the PRODES project as the dependent variable. The accuracy of the models was evaluated by the parameters area under the curve (AUC), pseudo R, and Akaike information criterion, in addition to statistical tests.

Demyelination is among the most conspicuous neurological sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (COVID-19) in both the central (CNS) and peripheral (PNS) nervous systems. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain the mechanisms underlying demyelination in COVID-19. However, none have considered the SARS-CoV-2's effects on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS).
