The complex of mitochondrial protein cytochrome c (CytC) with anionic phospholipid cardiolipin (CL) plays a crucial role in the initiation of apoptosis by catalyzing lipid peroxidation in mitochondrial membranes. In our previous papers, we found that CytC and CL mixed in millimolar concentrations form a sediment showing microcrystals composed of nanospheres (Cyt-CL) of 11-12 and 8 nm in diameter. The hypothesis was proposed that Cyt-CL, having hydrophobic shell, may appear inside the membrane lipid bilayer in mitochondria and peroxidase membrane phospholipids so initiating the apoptotic cascade.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on X-ray diffraction of (YBi)Fe(BO) single crystals between 90-500 K, revealing a diffuse structural phase transition around 370 K.
  • The transition involved a change from a trigonal structure in space group P321 to R32, with differences in the arrangement of FeO octahedra.
  • Notable changes in atomic distances and displacement parameters during the transition suggest that the electron density helices formed by Fe, O atoms contribute to the material's unique properties like chirality and multiferroicity.

The free boundary of smectic A (SmA), nematic and isotropic liquid phases were studied using a polarized optical microscope, an interferometric surface structure analyzer (ISSA), an atomic force microscope (AFM) and a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM). Images of the SmA phase free surface obtained by the polarized microscope and ISSA are in good correlation and show a well-known focal domain structure. The new periodic stripe structure was observed by scanning near-field optical microscopy on the surface of the smectic A, nematic and isotropic phases.

Three-dimensional (3D) rapid prototyping technology based on near-infrared light-induced polymerization of photocurable compositions containing upconversion nanomaterials has been explored. For this aim, the rationally-designed core/shell upconversion nanoparticles NaYF:Yb,Tm/NaYF, with the distinct ultraviolet-emitting lines and unprecedentedly high near-infrared to ultraviolet conversion efficiency of [Formula: see text] have been used. The upconverted ultraviolet photons were capable to efficiently activate photoinitiators contained in light-sensitive resins under moderate intensities of NIR excitation below 10 W cm and induce generation of radicals and photopolymerization in situ.

IscX (or YfhJ) is a protein of unknown function which takes part in the iron-sulfur cluster assembly machinery, a highly specialized and essential metabolic pathway. IscX binds to iron with low affinity and interacts with IscS, the desulfurase central to cluster assembly. Previous studies have suggested a competition between IscX and CyaY, the bacterial ortholog of frataxin, for the same binding surface of IscS.

Influenza A virus, a member of the Orthomyxoviridae family of enveloped viruses, is one of the human and animal top killers, and its structure and components are therefore extensively studied during the last decades. The most abundant component, M1 matrix protein, forms a matrix layer (scaffold) under the viral lipid envelope, and the functional roles as well as structural peculiarities of the M1 protein are still under heavy debate. Despite multiple attempts of crystallization, no high resolution structure is available for the full length M1 of Influenza A virus.

We have studied the alignment of a nematic liquid crystal (LC) material on aluminum subwavelength nanogratings as a function of the period, , and the slit width to period ratio, . A method, based on Fourier analysis of the transmittance spectra of the LC grating system, has been applied. We show that the gratings provide stable planar alignment only for shorter periods and narrower slits ( < 400 nm, / < 2/3).

The ongoing interest in fast liquid crystal (LC) modes stimulated by display technology and new applications has motivated us to study in detail the in-plane switching (IPS) vertically aligned (VA) mode. We have studied how the decrease of the period of the interdigitated electrodes (down to sub-micrometer scale) influences the switching speed, especially the LC relaxation to the initial homeotropic state. We have found that there are two types of the relaxation: a fast relaxation caused by the surface LC sub-layer deformed in the vicinity of the electrodes and the slower relaxation of the bulk LC.

Optical activity in the X-ray range stems from the electric-dipole-electric-quadrupole interference terms mixing multipoles of opposite parity, and can be observed exclusively in systems with broken inversion symmetry. The gyration tensor formalism is used to describe the X-ray optical activity in langasite LaGaSiO crystal with the P321 space group. An experimental study of the X-ray natural circular dichroism (XNCD) near the Ga K-edge in LaGaSiO single crystal was performed at ESRF beamline ID12, both along and perpendicular to the crystal optical axis.

The evolution of the crystal structure and electrical transport properties of distorted layered transition metal dichalcogenide ReSe was studied under high pressure up to ~90 GPa by Raman spectroscopy and electrical resistivity measurements accompanied by ab initio electronic band structure calculations. Raman spectroscopy studies indicate an isostructural phase transition due to layer sliding at ~7 GPa, to the distorted 1T-phase which remains stable up to the highest pressures employed in these experiments. From a direct band gap semiconductor at ambient pressure, ReSe undergoes pressure-induced metallization at pressures ~35 GPa, in agreement with the ab initio calculations.

Influenza A virus matrix protein M1 plays an essential role in the virus lifecycle, but its functional and structural properties are not entirely defined. Here we employed small-angle X-ray scattering, atomic force microscopy and zeta-potential measurements to characterize the overall structure and association behavior of the full-length M1 at different pH conditions. We demonstrate that the protein consists of a globular N-terminal domain and a flexible C-terminal extension.

Hydrolysis of arabinoxylan (AX) by glycoside hydrolase family 10 (GH10) xylanases produces xylo- and arabinoxylo-oligosaccharides ((A)XOS) which have shown prebiotic effects. The thermostable GH10 xylanase RmXyn10A has shown great potential to produce (A)XOS. In this study, the structure of RmXyn10A was investigated, the catalytic module by homology modelling and site-directed mutagenesis and the arrangement of its five domains by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS).

Dystroglycan (DG) is a cell adhesion complex composed by two subunits, the highly glycosylated α-DG and the transmembrane β-DG. In skeletal muscle, DG is involved in dystroglycanopathies, a group of heterogeneous muscular dystrophies characterized by a reduced glycosylation of α-DG. The genes mutated in secondary dystroglycanopathies are involved in the synthesis of O-mannosyl glycans and in the O-mannosylation pathway of α-DG.

Dystroglycan (DG) is a highly glycosylated protein complex that links the cytoskeleton with the extracellular matrix, mediating fundamental physiological functions such as mechanical stability of tissues, matrix organization and cell polarity. A crucial role in the glycosylation of the DG α subunit is played by its own N-terminal region that is required by the glycosyltransferase LARGE. Alteration in this O-glycosylation deeply impairs the high affinity binding to other extracellular matrix proteins such as laminins.

Recently introduced upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have pushed the depth of photodynamic therapy (PDT) treatment to the centimetre range by converting deeply-penetrating near-infrared (NIR) radiation to visible radiation for photoexcitation of PDT drugs. Here we demonstrate that the direct exposure of the cancer tissue to phototoxic ultraviolet radiation generated by NIR-photoexcited UCNPs enabled successful PDT. To this aim, core/shell UCNPs of the formula NaYF:YbTm/NaYF featuring an enhanced band in the ultraviolet UV-A and UV-B spectral bands were rationally designed and synthesised.
