Here, we report a synthesis of fluoroquinolones carrying a monoterpene moiety at the C7 position of aromatic structure. The minimal inhibitory concentrations of fluoroquinolone fused with trans-3-hydroxy-cis-myrtanylamine 18 against Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA isolates) were two- to eightfold lower compared to moxifloxacin, although fourfold higher against MRSA isolates. The fluoroquinolone fused with (-)-nopylamine 16 was four- to eightfold less active on MSSA compared to moxifloxacin, while had similar activity on MRSA.

Infectious diseases caused by various nosocomial microorganisms affect worldwide both immunocompromised and relatively healthy persons. Bacteria and fungi have different tools to evade antimicrobials, such as hydrolysis damaging the drug, efflux systems, and the formation of biofilm that significantly complicates the treatment of the infection. Here, we show that myrtenol potentiates the antimicrobial and biofilm-preventing activity of conventional drugs against and mono- and dual-species cultures.

The widespread presence of multidrug-resistant pathogenic microorganisms challenges the development of novel chemotype antimicrobials, insensitive to microbial tools of resistance. To date, various monoterpenoids have been shown as potential antimicrobials. Among many classes of molecules with antimicrobial activity, terpenes and terpenoids are an attractive basis for the design of antimicrobials because of their low toxicity and availability for various modifications.

The gasotransmitter hydrogen sulfide (HS) is an important biological mediator, playing an essential role in many physiological and pathological processes. It is produced by transsulfuration - an evolutionarily highly conserved pathway for the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids methionine and cysteine. Cystathionine-β-synthase (CBS) and cystathionine-γ-lyase (CSE) enzymes play a central role in cysteine metabolism and HS production.

Here, recent publications on the role of mitochondrial non-phosphorylating pathways (NPhPs) in the electron transport chain during the de-etiolation of wheat leaves are reviewed. Among NPhPs, the alternative oxidase (AOX) pathway is the most effective pathway in maintaining cellular redox and energy balance, especially under stress conditions, including light stress. AOX is considered to dissipate excess reductants produced in the chloroplasts, and thereby prevent photooxidation.
