The ability of materials to adhere bacteria on their surface is one of the most important aspects of their development and application in bioengineering. In this work, the effect of the properties of films and electrospun scaffolds made of composite materials based on biosynthetic poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) with the addition of magnetite nanoparticles (MNP) and their complex with graphene oxide (MNP/GO) on the adhesion of and under the influence of a low-frequency magnetic field and without it was investigated. The physicochemical properties (crystallinity; surface hydrophilicity) of the materials were investigated by X-ray structural analysis, differential scanning calorimetry and "drop deposition" methods, and their surface topography was studied by scanning electron and atomic force microscopy.

Yellow fever virus (YFV) transmitted by infected mosquitoes causes an acute viral disease for which there are no approved small-molecule therapeutics. Our recently developed machine learning models for YFV inhibitors led to the selection of a new pyrazolesulfonamide derivative with acceptable activity. We report that the -phenyl-1-(phenylsulfonyl)-1-1,2,4-triazol-3-amine class, which was recently identified as active non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors against HIV-1, can also be repositioned as inhibitors of yellow fever virus replication.

2-Ethyl-6-methyl-3-hydroxypyridine succinate (EMHPS, Mexidol) is an original antioxidant and an anti-ischemic drug with the possibility of wide applications in the complex therapy of diseases, accompanied by the development of oxidative stress and ischemia; for example, ischemic stroke, chronic cerebral ischemia, and chronic heart failure. The use of EMHPS in the complex therapy of the above diseases may cause the development of drug-drug interactions, particularly pharmacokinetic interactions at the level of transporter proteins. In the present study, we evaluated the interaction of EMHPS with ABCB1 and SLCO1B1.

The ability of the MF3 protein from to protect plants by inducing their resistance to pathogenic fungi, bacteria, and viruses is well confirmed both in greenhouses and in the field; however, the molecular basis of this phenomenon remains unexplored. To find a relationship between the primary (and spatial) structure of the protein and its target activity, we analyzed the inducing activity of a set of mutants generated by alanine scanning and an alpha-helix deletion (ahD) in the part of the MF3 molecule previously identified by our group as a 29-amino-acid peptide working as the inducer on its own. Testing the mutants' inducing activity using the "tobacco-tobacco mosaic virus" pathosystem revealed that some of them showed an almost threefold (V60A and V62A) or twofold (G51A, L58A, ahD) reduction in inducing activity compared to the wild-type MF3 type.

Chemical chaperones are low-molecular-weight compounds that suppress protein aggregation. They can influence different stages of the aggregation process-the stage of protein denaturation, the nucleation stage and the stage of aggregate growth-and this may lead to a change in the aggregation kinetic regime. Here, the possibility of changing the kinetic regime in the presence of a chemical chaperone 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (2-HP-β-CD) was investigated for a test system based on the thermally induced aggregation of yeast alcohol dehydrogenase (yADH) at 56 °C.

The Rurikids were the reigning house of Rus', its principalities and, ultimately the Tsardom of Russia, for seven centuries: from the IX to the end of the XVI century. According to the Primary Chronicle (the Tale of Bygone Years), the main chronicle of Rus', the Rurik dynasty was founded by the Varangian prince Rurik, invited to reign in Novgorod in 862, but still there is no direct genetic evidence of the origin of the early Rurikids. This research, for the first time, provides a genome-wide paleogenetic analysis of bone remains belonging to one of the Rurikids, Prince Dmitry Alexandrovich (?-1294), the son of the Grand Prince of Vladimir Alexander Yaroslavich Nevsky (1221-1263).

The exact identification of promoter sequences remains a serious problem in computational biology, as the promoter prediction algorithms under development continue to produce false-positive results. Therefore, to fully assess the validity of predicted sequences, it is necessary to perform a comprehensive test of their properties, such as the presence of downstream transcribed DNA regions behind them, or chromatin accessibility for transcription factor binding. In this paper, we examined the promoter sequences of chromosome 1 of the rice genome from the Database of Potential Promoter Sequences predicted using a mathematical algorithm based on the derivation and calculation of statistically significant promoter classes.

The solute carrier organic anion transporter family member, OATP1B1, is one of the most important transporter proteins, which mediate penetration of many endogenous substances and xenobiotics into hepatocytes. A model system providing expression of the functional protein is needed to assess interaction of OATP1B1 with various substances. Based on the HEK293 cells, we obtained the HEK293-OATP1B1 cell line, constitutively expressing the SLCO1B1 gene encoding the OATP1B1 transporter.

During transition into a dormant state, () cells are able to accumulate free porphyrins that makes them sensitive to photodynamic inactivation (PDI). The formation of dormant cells in a liquid medium with an increased concentration of magnesium (up to 25 mM) and zinc (up to 62 µM) resulted in an increase in the total amount of endogenous porphyrins in dormant cells and their photosensitivity, especially for bacteria phagocytosed by macrophages. To gain insight into possible targets for PDI in bacterial dormant mycobacterial cells, a proteomic profiling with SDS gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry analysis were conducted.

The carotenoids mixture (MC) isolated from the starfish contains more than 50% astaxanthin, 4-6% each zeaxanthine and lutein, and less pharmacologically active components such as free fatty acids and their glycerides. Astaxanthin, the major component of MC, belongs to the xanthophyll class of carotenoids, and is well known for its antioxidant properties. In this work, in vitro and in vivo studies on the biological activity of MC were carried out.
