The jaboticaba is a fruit with a highly promising chemical profile for producing fermented products with biological activity. In this context, evaluating pre-fermentative maceration techniques in jaboticaba fermentations is essential to optimize the extraction of phenolic compounds and other metabolites of interest, imparting antioxidant characteristics to the product and offering potential health benefits. This study evaluated the impact of two pre-fermentative maceration techniques on the phenolic composition, bioaccessibility, and biological activities (α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and ACE inhibition) of alcoholic and acetic fermented products from jaboticaba.

This study evaluated the effects of tea tree essential oil (TTO) on blue mold severity, volatile compound profiles, and postharvest quality of 'Fuji' apples during cold storage. Two experiments were conducted using laboratory-extracted TTO from Brazil and commercial TTO from Australia, applied by vaporization at various concentrations. Both types of TTO affected major volatile compounds, including terpinen-4-ol, γ-terpinene, and α-terpinene.

Ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a condition in which the mandibular condyle fuses with the mandibular fossa through fibrous or bone tissue. It is a debilitating pathology that interferes with chewing, speaking, and oral hygiene. Currently, alloplastic reconstruction is considered the gold standard for treating severely compromised TMJs, such as in ankylosis.

Biodegradable starch foam trays offer an eco-friendly substitute for petroleum-based single-use packaging, notably polystyrene foams. However, they lack flexibility, tensile strength, and water-sensitivity, addressable through lignocellulosic reinforcement. This study aimed to develop biodegradable starch foam trays filled with different food-chain side streams for sustainable alternative packaging.

Background: Health literacy (HL) is a key component of health promotion and sustainability and contributes to well-being. Despite its global relevance, HL is an under-researched topic in South America but is now debuting its exploration in Brazil. To leverage its benefits for South America, the mere translation of validated tools into Portuguese is insufficient.

The demand for sustainable, healthy, and pesticide-free food has grown in recent years. Agroecological seeds cannot receive chemical treatment, as pesticides present toxicological and environmental risks, requiring the development of alternative methods for disease control, such as the use of essential oils. In this study, orange essential oil was extracted and encapsulated in zein nanoparticles by the nanoprecipitation method.

In biomonitoring and laboratory studies, it is typical to measure a battery of molecular, biochemical, and cytogenetic biomarkers to evaluate the effects of xenobiotics in biota. However, summarizing the results of several biomarkers to inform laypersons and environmental agencies is still a challenge for researchers and environmental specialists. To address this issue, researchers have developed indexes such as the Integrated Biomarker Responses (IBR) and Integrated Biomarker Response version 2 (IBRv2) to summarize all biomarkers responses into a single value.

Sertoli cells are essential for the male reproduction system as they provide morphological support and nutrients for germ cells to guarantee ongoing spermatogenesis. The aim of this work was to predict the electrical properties at the plasma membrane that trigger Sertoli cell rapid responses by involving ionic channels. The rapid responses of Sertoli cells in culture were monitored using patch clamp electrical measurement and compared to data obtained using pharmacological tools (from intact seminiferous tubules).

A new adsorbent based on an immobilized waste-derived LTA zeolite in agarose (AG) has proven to be an innovative and efficient alternative for removing metallic contaminants from water impacted by acid mine drainage (AMD) because the immobilization prevents the solubilization of the zeolite in acidic media and eases its separation from the adsorbed solution. A pilot device was developed containing slices of the sorbent material [AG (1.5%)-LTA (8%)] to be used in a treatment system under an upward continuous flow.

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) have their use approved for the diagnosis/treatment of malignant tumors and can be metabolized by the organism. To prevent embolism caused by these nanoparticles, they need to be coated with biocompatible and non-cytotoxic materials. Here, we synthesized an unsaturated and biocompatible copolyester, poly (globalide--ε-caprolactone) (PGlCL), and modified it with the amino acid cysteine (Cys) via a thiol-ene reaction (PGlCLCys).

The oceanic South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) has played a major role during South America's 2021/2022 summer extreme rainy season, being responsible for more than 90% of the precipitation in some regions of Southeast Brazil and in some regions of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWA). The summer of 2021/2022 was unique and rare and considered an abnormally humid season as verified by official Brazilian Institutes. First, the unusual number of cases of SACZ episodes (seven), was the highest recorded in the last decade.
