The Caatinga biome has a wide variety of plants which, despite their irregular distribution, are frequently used to feed animals. This study aimed to evaluate the gas production kinetics of Caatinga plants: Malva (Herissantia crispa), Aroeira (Myracrodruon urundeuva), Marmeleiro (Croton sonderianus), and Bamburral (Hyptis suaveolens). Buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris), a cultivated forage, was used as a control.

Seaweeds are natural sources of sulfated polysaccharides (SPs), biopolymers with remarkable pharmacological properties, including biological actions capable of attenuating components of the inflammatory process such as edema, cytokines, cell migration and pain. Our results confirm that SPs obtained from Gracilaria domingensis (SP-GD) are agarans, primarily composed of residues of β-d-galactopyranose 6-sulfate and 3,6-anhydro-α-l-galactopyranose. Specifically, SP-GD at a dose of 10 mg/kg was effective in significantly reducing paw edema induced by carrageenan or histamine, serotonin, bradykinin, 48/80 and prostaglandin E2.

In Situ Printing of Polylactic Acid/Nanoceramic Filaments for the Repair of Bone Defects Using a Portable 3D Device.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

July 2024

LIMAV-Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Advanced Materials, BioMatLab, Materials Science & Engineering Graduate Program, UFPI-Federal University of Piauí, Teresina 64049-550, Piauí, Brazil.

3D printing is attractive for the direct repair of bone defects in underdeveloped countries and in emergency situations. So far, the lack of an interesting method to produce filament using FDA-approved biopolymers and nanoceramics combined with a portable strategy limits the use of in situ 3D printing. Herein, we investigated the osseointegration of new nanocomposite filaments based on polylactic acid (PLA), laponite (Lap), and hydroxyapatite (Hap) printed directly at the site of the bone defect in rats using a portable 3D printer.

The objective was to evaluate the effect of detoxified castor bean replacing soybean meal in the concentrate diet or as nitrogen organic fertilizer replacing urea on intake and nutrient digestibility, blood parameters and productive performance of sheep finished on irrigated Tamani grass pasture under continuous stocking and variable stocking rate. The treatments were two concentrate diets: standard (ground corn and soybean meal) and alternative diet (ground corn and detoxified castor bean cake), and two nitrogen fertilizers: chemical (urea) and organic (fresh castor bean cake). The randomized complete block design was used in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with four replications (500 m² paddocks).

Materials (Basel)

September 2022

Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Advanced Materials (LIMAV), Materials Science & Engineering Graduate Program, Federal University of Piauí (UFPI), Teresina 64049-550, PI, Brazil.

This work reports the functionalization of sodium titanate nanotubes with amine groups obtained from the reaction of titanate nanotubes with [3-(2-Aminoethylamino)propyl]trimethoxysilane, NaTiNT-2NH, and 3-[2-(2-Aminoethylamino)ethylamino]propyltrimethoxysilane, NaTiNT-3NH. It was verified that the crystalline and morphological structures of NaTiNT were preserved after the functionalization, spectroscopies showed that aminosilane interacted covalently with the surface of NaTiNT, and the incorporation of the aminosilane groups on the surface of NaTiNT can be confirmed. The adsorbent matrices NaTiNT-2NH and NaTiNT-3NH were used to remove the anionic dye from remazol blue R (RB) in aqueous medium, and the highest adsorption capacity was around 365.

Teacher education programs should have as one of their purposes the promotion of self-regulatory skills for learning among students who aspire to be teachers so that they can take a leading role in their learning and foster these skills in their future students. Considering the importance of knowing what students in teacher education programs do to study and learn, as well as how efficacious they feel to deal with academic demands, this study is part of a larger research and aims to investigate the learning and study strategies and self-efficacy for learning beliefs of 220 students enrolled in teacher education programs in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics of a Higher Education Institution in the state of Piauí, and examine them in relation to age, gender, licentiate area, and course semester. Brazilian translations of the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI - Third Edition) and the Self-efficacy for Learning Form were used for data collection.

Fabrication of Polymeric Microparticles by Electrospray: The Impact of Experimental Parameters.

J Funct Biomater

January 2020

LIMAV-Interdisciplinary Advanced Materials Laboratory, PPGCM-Materials Science and Engineering Graduate Program, UFPI-Federal University of Piaui, Teresina 64049-550, Brazil.

Microparticles (MPs) with controlled morphologies and sizes have been investigated by several researchers due to their importance in pharmaceutical, ceramic, cosmetic, and food industries to just name a few. In particular, the electrospray (ES) technique has been shown to be a viable alternative for the development of single particles with different dimensions, multiple layers, and varied morphologies. In order to adjust these properties, it is necessary to optimize different experimental parameters, such as polymer solvent, voltage, flow rate (FR), type of collectors, and distance between the collector and needle tip, which will all be highlighted in this review.

Urolithiasis affects approximately 10% of the world population and is strongly associated with calcium oxalate (CaOx) crystals. Currently, there is no efficient compound that can be used to prevent this disease. However, seaweeds' sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) can change the CaOx crystals surface's charge and thus modify the crystallization dynamics, due to the interaction of the negative charges of these polymers with the crystal surface during their synthesis.
