Immunoglobulin M (IgM) plays a regulatory role in subsequent immune response development, thereby accelerating the production of immunoglobulin G (IgG) with high affinity. Selective IgM deficiency (SIGMD) is a rare immune disorder that has been reported in association with serious infections, such as bacteremia. Patients commonly present with infections, atopy, septicemia, splenomegaly, neoplasia, and other autoimmune disorders.

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is an autosomal recessive disorder of ectopic mineralization and fragmentation of elastic fibers in skin, eyes, cardiovascular and digestive system. PXE is caused by sequence variants in ABCC6, which encodes multidrug resistance-associated protein 6 (MRP6, also known as the ABCC6 protein). MRP6 is an important regulator of inorganic plasma pyrophosphate that acts as an inhibitor of ectopic mineralization observed in PXE patients with low inorganic plasma pyrophosphate levels.

Hepatitis B and C are chronic diseases with mental and social impacts which can result in poor quality of life. The aim of this study was to determine the experiences of stigma in a sample of hepatitis B- and C-positive patients in Pakistan. In a cross-sectional study, 140 inpatients and outpatients from 3 tertiary-care hospitals in Islamabad and Rawalpindi answered a semi-structured questionnaire about stigma experienced from relatives, friends, spouse and health-care providers, and about work/financial problems.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Gynaecology and Obstetric Department (Unit Ill), Federal Government Services Hospital, Islamabad for a period of two years, from January 1, 2001 to December 31, 2003. A protocol for fertility work-up included complete history, examination, monitoring of ovulation and assessment of male factor.

Apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a recently recognised entity, with typical electrocardiographic, echocardiographic and myocardial scintigraphic features. Thallium imaging is more sensitive than echocardiography, but electrocardiogram appears to be an important clue to its diagnosis which shows changes in the mid precordial leads in most of the patients.
