A double-blind, randomized, and controlled clinical trial with therapeutic intervention was performed at a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro to evaluate whether the addition of Hayne oleoresin to a carboxypolymethylene hydrogel is more effective in skin tear healing than standard treatment. The sample consisted of 84 patients, predominantly men, with a mean age of 67.37 years.

Brown algae are vital structural elements and contributors to biodiversity in marine ecosystems. These organisms adapt to various environmental challenges by producing primary and secondary metabolites crucial for their survival, defense, and resilience. Besides their ecological role, these diverse metabolites have potential for biotechnological applications in industries including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food.

Enterococcus faecalis is a common cause of nosocomial infections and is frequently associated with endodontic infections. However, there is a scarcity of studies addressing the genetic characterization of E. faecalis lineages most commonly associated with root canals.

Caloric Restriction (CR) and cinnamon promote several benefits, including the modulation of lipid metabolism and body fat mass. We hypothesize that cinnamon may act as a mimetic of restriction or enhance the effects of caloric restriction on adipose tissue. Adult male Wistar rats were divided into Control (CT, n = 8) and Cinnamon (CIN, n = 7), with free access to standard chow; Calorie Restriction (CR, n = 8) and Calorie Restriction with Cinnamon (CIN-CR, n = 7), subjected to a 30% reduction in food intake compared to the average consumption of CT rats.

Flame retardants, crucial for fire prevention, are used worldwide, but they are considered to be 'emerging contaminants' and may pose risks to human and environmental health. Aluminum diethyl phosphinate (ALPI) is a halogen-free flame retardant. To evaluate the toxicity of this compound, the following assays were performed: Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity assay; toxicity assays with two endpoints (mitochondrial dehydrogenase activity, plasma membrane integrity); micronucleus assay with human hepatoma cell line HepG2.

Concern about radiation exposure to non-human biota and the environment has increased since the 1990s, resulting in several publications by UNSCEAR, IAEA, ICRP, among other agencies, which highlighted significant gaps in knowledge regarding non-human biota and resulted in the establishment of Reference Animals and Plants (RAPs). In Brazil, the Atlantic Forest biome has vast biodiversity, but there is a lack of information on the radiometric profile of plant species growing there. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the radiometric profile of Ouratea miersii (Malpighiales), endemic to the Atlantic Rainforest, collected in the State of Rio de Janeiro, city of Niterói, at the Municipal Natural Park (PARNIT), which covers a region of protected Atlantic Rainforest.

Lyme disease, a zoonotic infection caused by the bacterium , is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected ticks. Its diagnosis primarily relies on serological methods; however, the existing borreliosis techniques have shown a variable sensitivity and specificity. Our study aimed to map IgG epitopes from five outer membrane proteins (Omp) from [Filament flagellar 41kD (PI1089), flagellar hook-associated protein (Q44767), Flagellar hook k2 protein (O51173), Putative Omp BURGA03 (Q44849), and 31 kDa OspA (P0CL66)] lipoprotein to find specific epitopes for the development of accurate diagnosis methods.

Photoaging induced by ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation is mainly caused by the reactive oxygen species (ROS) increase, which trigger undesirable changes in the skin, such as inflammatory reactions, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and loss of elasticity. In this context, plant ingredients have been highlighted in recent decades due to their antioxidant mechanisms. This study investigated the potential of ethanolic extract against UVA-induced damage in 3T3 fibroblasts.

Bovine leptospirosis is a major reproductive disease. As cows can be leptospiral carriers both on the renal and genital tract, diagnosis can be challenging, with an underlying risk of misdiagnosis. Traditionally, the infection has been diagnosed by culturing or PCR from urine samples.

Background And Objective: Scoping reviews are a type of evidence synthesis that aims to identify and map the breadth of evidence available on a particular topic, field, concept, or issue, within or across a defined context or contexts. Scoping reviews can contribute to clinical practice guideline development, policy making, reduce research waste by eliminating duplication of research effort, and be a precursor to a systematic review or inform further primary research. This article aims to provide a brief introduction of how to conduct and report scoping reviews.

Introduction: Metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients who are refractory to initial treatment lines exhibit a challenging clinical scenario characterised by a poor prognosis and constrained therapeutic options. This systematic review and meta-analysis assess the integration of bevacizumab into trifluridine-tipiracil (TFD/TPI) therapy for mCRC, examining its benefits across patient subgroups and evaluating safety relative to TFD/TPI monotherapy.
Materials And Methods: Following preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis statements, we conducted a thorough literature search from 15 October to 11 November 2023, covering MEDLINE, Embase and the Cochrane database.

Background And Aims: Vedolizumab is a humanized gut selective drug that targets α4β7 integrin and has been used successfully in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Pivotal studies have already demonstrated the drug's safety, but some real-life cohorts have shown an increase in arthralgia and arthritis in patients using vedolizumab. These findings raised the question of whether these joint symptoms are extraintestinal manifestations of IBD (since the drug acts only in the gut) or if they are associated with the use of vedolizumab.

Serological tests are critical tools in the fight against infectious disease. They detect antibodies produced during an adaptive immune response against a pathogen with an immunological reagent, whose antibody binding characteristics define the specificity and sensitivity of the assay. While pathogen proteins have conveniently served as reagents, their performance is limited by the natural grouping of specific and non-specific antibody binding sites, epitopes.

The pursuit of an improved quality of life is a major trend in the food market. This is driving the reformulation of the industry's product portfolio, with the aim of providing nourishment while also contributing to beneficial health metabolic processes. In this context, the use of local biodiversity and the recovery of the traditional knowledge associated with the consumption of vegetables that grow spontaneously in nature emerge as more sustainable and nutritionally adequate concepts.
