Aim: To study the predictive capabilities of the MADIT-ICD Benefit Score calculator in assessing the benefit of implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) placement for the primary prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD).
Material And Methods: This study included 388 patients with NYHA II-IV functional class chronic heart failure (CHF) with a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) ≤35 % who underwent ICD placement for the primary prevention of SCD. Patients were followed up for two years to record the endpoints of first-time paroxysmal sustained ventricular tachyarrhythmia (VT) or non-arrhythmic death.

The optimal approach for prevention of cardiovascular events and reduction of bleeding in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and atrial fibrillation (AF) is still controversial. The aim of our study is to asses our single-center experience with concomitant left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). 50 patients with ACS without ST elevation and history of AF were randomized after successful PCI to LAAO or conventional medical therapy.

Kommerell's diverticulum (KD) is a rare congenital vascular abnormality due to the formation of an abnormal aortic arch, most commonly associated with dilatation at the proximal part of the aberrant subclavian artery. This article describes an option of surgical treatment in a patient with KD. The proposed new technique of aortic arch surgical reconstruction with a stent-graft placement in the descending aorta reduces CPB time, aortic clamp and circulatory arrest time.

Purpose: Our study aimed to assess the achievement of target ablation index (AI) values and their impact on first-pass pulmonary vein isolation (FPI) as well as to identify FPI predictors.
Methods: Atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation was performed according to the local practice, and target AIs were evaluated. The actual AI was calculated as the median value of all ablation points for the anterior and posterior left atrial (LA) walls.

Introduction: The objective of this study was to identify risk factors for deep sternal wound infection (DSWI) after off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) grafting surgery.
Methods: A total of 8,442 patients undergoing OPCAB from April 1, 2009 to December 31, 2018 were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 956 were eventually enrolled on this study based on our exclusion criteria.
Hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hsPDA) in premature newborns is associated with a risk of PDA-related morbidities. Classification into risk groups may have a clinical utility in cases of suspected hsPDA to decrease the need for echocardiograms and unnecessary treatment. This prospective observational study included 99 premature newborns with extremely low body weight, who had an echocardiogram performed within the first three days of life.

Introduction: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) techniques are increasingly being adopted into clinical routine for various risk groups. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is seen in up to 75% of patients with severe aortic valve stenosis (AS) presenting with typical angina pectoris. Due to high mortality rates and procedural complications in these patients, a hybrid concept of simultaneous transaortic TAVI and off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) can be a feasible treatment option.

Background: Although early abdominal complications after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) are rare, the associated mortality remains high.
Aim: To develop a risk score for the prediction of early abdominal complications after CABG with CPB.
Methods: This retrospective study was performed in the Federal State Budgetary Establishment "Federal Center of Cardiovascular Surgery" of the Ministry of Health of Russia (the city of Chelyabinsk) and included data of 6586 patients who underwent CABG with CPB during 2011-2017.

This is a prospective multicenter registry of atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation with the Ablation Index (AI) technology, which has been introduced as a marker predicting ablation lesion depth. The index incorporates the main parameters of radiofrequency point-by-point ablation: power, contact force, and time of ablation. The AI is calculated for every operator depending on personal skills, and there are no strict indications on the range of the parameter considering its safety and efficacy during pulmonary vein isolation.

Background: Aortic root and ascending aortic aneurysms are traditionally surgically treated through the deployment of a conduit with an artificial aortic valve, which significantly increases the risk of postoperative complications in the form of thrombosis.
Materials & Methods: We report a case of Wolfe procedure in a 78-year-old female patient with aortic root aneurysm at high risk for conventional Bentall surgery.
Discussion And Conclusion: We use this case to discuss the effectiveness and short-term results of this procedure.

A novel chemiluminescent method was developed to evaluate ROS generation by platelets. This method allows measuring activities of NADPH oxidase (NOX2) and enzymes synthesizing secondary ROS (superoxide dismutase, catalase, etc.) in resting and ADP-activated platelets (inductor of platelet aggregation and ROS generation) using a small number of cells.

Background And Aim Of The Study: Minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) for mitral valve repair (MVRp) has been increasingly used. This study aimed to evaluate the early and late results of MICS for MVRp vs conventional sternotomy.
Materials And Methods: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials or observational studies (with matched populations) comparing MICS and conventional MVRp reporting any of the following outcomes: mortality, MVRp failure, complications, blood transfusion, readmission within 30 days after discharge, long-term reoperation for mitral regurgitation, operative times, mechanical ventilation time, intensive care unit (ICU) stay, or hospital stay.
Unlabelled: The JAK2 V617F somatic mutation is one of the most frequent markers of CHIP (clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential). CHIP is characterized by the presence of a myeloid cells clone in peripheral blood in the absence of the sufficient reasons to diagnose the hematologic disease. The CHIP is proposed as a potential independent risk factor for vascular pathology.

Background: Isolated left ventricular apical hypoplasia (ILVAH) is a rare congenital cardiac abnormality, which might result in severe symptomatic heart failure (HF) with pulmonary hypertension, atrial fibrillation (AF), or malignant ventricular tachycardia in adults.
Case Summary: A 32-years-old man presented with exertional dyspnoea New York Heart Association Class II and persistent AF. Echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance showed the presence of (i) spherical remodelling of the left ventricle (LV) with impaired contractile function (three-dimensional ejection fraction, EF 32%); (ii) substitution of apical myocardium by fatty tissue; (iii) abnormal origin of a papillary muscle network; and (iv) an elongated right ventricle, compatible with ILVAH.

Importance: Renal denervation can reduce cardiac sympathetic activity that may result in an antiarrhythmic effect on atrial fibrillation.
Objective: To determine whether renal denervation when added to pulmonary vein isolation enhances long-term antiarrhythmic efficacy.
Design, Setting, And Participants: The Evaluate Renal Denervation in Addition to Catheter Ablation to Eliminate Atrial Fibrillation (ERADICATE-AF) trial was an investigator-initiated, multicenter, single-blind, randomized clinical trial conducted at 5 referral centers for catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation in the Russian Federation, Poland, and Germany.

In cases of aortic valve disease, prosthetic valves have been increasingly used for valve replacement, however, there are inherent problems with prostheses, and their quality in the so-called Third World countries is lower in comparison to new-generation models, which leads to shorter durability. Recently, transcatheter aortic valve replacement has been explored as a less invasive option for patients with high-risk surgical profile. In this scenario, aortic valve neocuspidization (AVNeo) has emerged as another option, which can be applied to a wide spectrum of aortic valve diseases.
