In staging for testicular germ cell tumor (GCT), current guidelines lack consensus regarding the measurement of retroperitoneal lymph node metastasis, concerning the recommended plane and dimension. This exploratory study aimed to assess its impact on clinical stage (cS) and therapy. We retrospectively examined 154 cSI (retroperitoneal lymph nodes < 10 mm in axial short-axis diameter (SAD)) GCT patients, without adjuvant therapy and a follow-up ≥ 24 months.

Article Synopsis
  • Testicular tumors are the most common cancers in young men, and their treatment often includes the implantation of a testicular prosthesis during orchiectomy, yet little data exists on this trend in Germany.
  • Over a 15-year study period (2006-2021), the number of testicular prosthesis implantations in Germany rose from 699 to 870 cases, with notable shifts in reasons for implantation: a decrease in cases due to testicular tumors and an increase related to gender-affirming surgery.
  • Despite an overall increase in prosthesis implantations, a significant portion of hospitals performed very few surgeries (less than 5) consistently over the years, indicating a concentration of procedures in a limited number of facilities.

MicroRNA-371a-3p-The Novel Serum Biomarker in Testicular Germ Cell Tumors.

Cancers (Basel)

August 2023

Department of Urology, Asklepios Klinik Altona, 22763 Hamburg, Germany.

Introduction: Testicular germ cell tumors (TGCTs) are a paradigm for the use of serum tumor markers in clinical management. However, conventional markers such as alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) have quite limited sensitivities and specificities. Within the last decade, the microRNA-371a-3p (miR371) emerged as a possible new biomarker with promising features.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how often urologic (related to the urinary system) injuries happen among soldiers in Afghanistan due to battle-related trauma over five years.
  • German urological surgeons treated an average of one patient a day and performed 314 surgeries, with most surgeries being battle-related.
  • The types of injuries and surgeries were different in battle-related cases compared to non-battle situations, showing that special skills are needed for soldiers injured in combat.

Article Synopsis
  • Testicular germ cell tumors (GCTs) are aggressive yet highly treatable, necessitating accurate staging of lymph-node metastasis for proper treatment planning.
  • A survey conducted among German hospitals examined how urologists and oncologists measure retroperitoneal lymph-node size, revealing a split preference between short-axis diameter (SAD) and long-axis diameter (LAD).
  • The study concludes that guidelines need to provide clear and consistent instructions for measuring lymph-node size to ensure better management of testicular cancer across different medical specialties.

Background: Before postchemotherapy retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (pcRPLND), in patients with metastasized germ cell tumors (GCTs), those harboring necrosis (NEC) cannot be distinguished from those who have teratoma (TER), resulting in relevant overtreatment, whereas microRNA-371a-3p may be predictive for viable GCT. The purpose of this study was to explore messenger RNA (mRNA) and proteins to distinguish TER from NEC in pcRPLND tissue.

Methods: The discovery cohort consisted in total of 48 patients, including 16 each with TER, viable GCT, and NEC.

Background Patients with chronic kidney disease ( CKD ) are at high risk of myocardial infarction. Cardiac troponins are the biomarkers of choice for the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction ( AMI ) without ST -segment elevation ( NSTE ). In patients with CKD , troponin levels are often chronically elevated, which reduces their diagnostic utility when NSTE - AMI is suspected.

Osseous response on linear and cyclic RGD-peptides immobilized on titanium surfaces in vitro and in vivo.

J Biomed Mater Res A

February 2018

Department of Oral, Maxillofacial and Plastic Surgery, University Medical Centre Rostock, Schillingallee 35, 18057, Rostock, Germany.

Biomimetic surface modifications of titanium (Ti) implants using the Arg-Gly-Asp-sequence (RGD) are promising to accelerate bone healing in cases of medical implants. Therefore, we compared the impact of linear and cyclic RGD (l- and c-RGD) covalently coupled onto Ti surfaces on the osseous response in vitro and in vivo. In vitro, osteoblasts' behavior on different surfaces (unmodified, amino-silanized [APTES], l- and c-RGD) was analysed regarding adhesion (fluorescence microscopy), proliferation (resazurin stain) and differentiation (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction on alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin).

Objectives: Lactate as a key regulator of the glycolytic phenotype has been recently described in fueling tumor growth and metastatic spread in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, in context of tumor recurrence following adjuvant radiation, the underlying mechanisms remain uncertain. We therefore investigate the role of lactate towards radioresistance in HNSCC in this prospective study for the first time in vivo.
