Background: Screening procedures for early Alzheimer's disease (AD) trials seek to efficiently identify participants who fulfill clinical and biomarker criteria for AD and enrich for those most likely to experience significant clinical progression during the study. Episodic memory performance is often assessed in screening, but the utility of different memory tests for optimizing screening efficiency and/or rates of clinical progression remains uncertain.

Objectives: Cross-study comparisons of the effects of inclusion criteria based on performance on the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT) or the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) on screen-failure rates for episodic memory and β-amyloid (Aβ) positivity (by CSF or PET) and on subsequent rates of clinical disease progression in randomized participants across three clinical trials in early (prodromal-to-mild) AD.

Diabetes is an increasingly common and costly condition for older adults. Each year, as many as 1 in 3 Medicare dollars is spent to treat and manage diabetes and associated comorbidities for people with diabetes. To control health care spending in the US, it is imperative that we identify factors for reducing hospitalizations for these individuals.

Article Synopsis
  • Malnutrition is linked to heart failure, specifically affecting the remodeling of the left ventricle (LV), which is crucial in heart disease progression.
  • The study evaluated over 7,200 patients, finding that those with moderate to severe malnutrition had a significantly higher incidence of LV remodeling (12.9%) compared to those with absent or mild malnutrition (9.5%).
  • After adjusting for various factors, patients with moderate-severe malnutrition were 1.69 times more likely to experience LV remodeling, highlighting the critical connection between nutritional status and heart health.

Objectives: Although low muscle mass may make an under-appreciated contribution to increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, no prospective studies have explored the association between low muscle mass and carotid atherosclerosis. We investigated whether muscle mass was related to a higher carotid intima-media thickness (C-IMT) and carotid artery plaque in a community-based population.

Methods: The study included 1,253 asymptomatic participants without known cardiovascular disease, who underwent carotid ultrasonography at baseline in 2013-2014 and received a re-examination in 2015-2016.

Degenerative disorders of the retina (including age-related macular degeneration), which originate primarily at or within the retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) layer, lead to a progressive disorganization of the retinal anatomy and the deterioration of visual function. The substitution of damaged RPE cells (RPEs) with in vitro cultured RPE cells using a subretinal cell carrier has shown potential for re-establishing the anatomical structure of the outer retinal layers and is, therefore, being further studied. Here, we present the principles of a surgical technique that allows for the effective subretinal transplantation of a cell carrier with cultivated RPEs into minipigs.

The Frailty screening should be widely performed; however, simple and inexpensive biomarkers are missing. Biomarkers that can be routinely assessed in many patients are desirable. Recently, the hemoglobin-to-red cell distribution width ratio (Hb/RDW, HRR) has been suggested as a new prognostic marker and has been reported to be associated with inflammation, one of the factors contributing to frailty.
