This viewpoint explores the gap between theoretical frameworks in experimental neuroscience and clinical neuropsychology. It highlights how John Duncan's theory of the Multiple Demand (MD) system, which links the frontal lobe to fluid intelligence (g), helps explain general performance on classical executive tests. However, it also discusses how traditional scores often fail to capture the complexity of behaviours associated with frontal lobe damage, and we suggest that developing improved scoring methods could be useful for integrating experimental and clinical neuropsychology insights.

Article Synopsis
  • Spindle cell-rich testicular sex cord-stromal tumors (TSCSTs) include types like myoid gonadal stromal tumor (MGST), adult granulosa cell tumor (AGCT), and unclassified TSCST, showing histopathologic similarities and lacking clear oncogenic drivers.
  • DNA sequencing indicates common chromosomal gains in these tumors, but further validation of these findings has not yet taken place, and the amount of chromosomal alterations varies among individual tumors.
  • This study used fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) to assess chromosomal changes in 10 tumors, revealing consistent increases in specific chromosomes across various cases, while also uncovering partial disagreements between FISH analysis and previous genomic sequencing results,

Two of every three persons living with dementia reside in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The projected increase in global dementia rates is expected to affect LMICs disproportionately. However, the majority of global dementia care costs occur in high-income countries (HICs), with dementia research predominantly focusing on HICs.

Latin American consensus recommendations for the management and treatment of patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD).

Span J Psychiatry Ment Health

September 2023

Research Center on Neurosciences, University of Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina; Department of Psychiatry, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Electronic address:

Unlabelled: Despite the abundance of literature on treatment-resistant depression (TRD), there is no universally accepted definition of TRD, and available treatment pathways for the management of TRD vary across the Latin American region, highlighting the need for a uniform definition and treatment principles to optimize the management of TRD in Latin America.

Methods: Following a thematic literature review and pre-meeting survey, a Latin America expert panel comprising 14 psychiatrists with clinical experience in managing patients with TRD convened and utilized the RAND/UCLA appropriateness method to develop consensus-based recommendations on the appropriate definition of TRD and principles for its management.

Results: The expert panel agreed that 'treatment-resistant depression' (TRD) is defined as 'failure of two drug treatments of adequate doses, for 4-8 weeks duration with adequate adherence, during a major depressive episode'.

We present the case of a lung transplant candidate under veno-venous membrane oxygenation assistance (VV ECMO) whose diagnosis of emphysema of undetermined etiology was redefined as Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) due to a scalp skin biopsy performed years after the beginning of his respiratory symptoms. A 20-year-old patient started three years before his admission with progressive dyspnea leading to a diagnosis of bullous emphysema of undetermined cause, which evolved into respiratory failure and evaluation for bilateral lung transplant. Three years later, he developed bilateral pneumonia requiring mechanical ventilation.

The coming years are likely to be turbulent due to a myriad of factors or polycrisis, including an escalation in climate extremes, emerging public health threats, weak productivity, increases in global economic instability and further weakening in the integrity of global democracy. These formidable challenges are not exogenous to the economy but are in some cases generated by the system itself. They can be overcome, but only with far-reaching changes to global economics.

Objectives: Secondary functional tricuspid regurgitation (FTR) management remains controversial mainly due to the lack of knowledge in its pathogenesis and the difficulties to measure the actual dimensions of tricuspid annulus (TA) with current imaging methods. Using a novel method based on multiphase cardiac computed tomography (CT) scan acquisition to accurately analyze the right atrioventricular junction size, we sought to explore modifications of TA morphometry and dynamics in secondary FTR.

Methods: Echocardiographic and cardiac CT studies were obtained from 21 patients with severe mitral regurgitation (MR group) and 21 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCMP group).

Effect of lithium in pyramidal neurons of Cornu Ammonis in an animal model.

J Psychiatr Res

November 2023

National Council of Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET), Argentina; Institute of Cognitive and Translational Neuroscience (INCyT), INECO Foundation, Favaloro University, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Bipolar disorder has been associated with a decrease in hippocampal size, and lithium appears to reverse this neuroanatomical abnormality. The objective of this work was to evaluate, at a cellular level, the size of both cell body and nucleus of pyramidal neurons located throughout the Cornu Ammonis (CA1 to CA4 regions). To perform this duty, we used 16 rats that were randomized into two groups: control and dietary lithium-treated.
