In this work, we describe the development of targeted polymeric nanoparticles loaded with lenvatinib for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A synthetic brush copolymer (PHEA-g-BIB-pButMA-g-PEG-biotin) was synthesized from α-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide (PHEA) by a three-step reaction involving atom transfer radical polymerisation (ATRP) to graft hydrophobic polybutylmethacrylate pendant groups and further conjugation with biotinylated polyethylene glycol via carbonate ester. Subsequently, lenvatinib-loaded nanoparticles were obtained and characterized demonstrating colloidal size, negative zeta potential, biotin exposure on the surface and the ability to release lenvatinib in a sustained manner.

As a development of our research on biocompatible glycoconjugate probes and specifically multi-chromophoric systems, herein, we report the synthesis and early bactericidal tests of two luminescent glycoconjugates whose basic structure is characterized by two boron dipyrromethene difluoride (BODIPY) moieties and three galactoside rings mounted on an oligophenylene ethynylene (OPE) skeleton. BODIPY fluorophores have found widespread application in many branches of biology in the last few decades. In particular, molecular platforms showing two different BODIPY groups have unique photophysical behavior useful in fluorescence imaging.

A novel octaurea-calix[4]tube (UC4T) has been synthesized in three steps from the original Beer's -butylcalix[4]tube ionophore. In a polar solvent (DMSO-), UC4T rapidly interconverts between two identical conformations with symmetry for the two calix[4]arene subunits. However, in a less polar solvent mixture (CDCl/DMSO-, 98 : 2), UC4T adopts a highly distorted asymmetric structure, which hinders the formation of typical tetraurea calix[4]arene capsular assemblies.

In this paper, we report on the decoration of a dense vertical array of ultrathin silicon nanowires (Si NWs), produced by metal-assisted chemical etching, with 20 nm gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications. To optimize the production of a uniform 3D SERS active platform, we tested different Si NW surface functionalizations with various alkoxysilanes before Au decoration.

Two silver(I) complexes with biologically relevant heterocyclic ligands, pyrrole and furan-2- carboxylic acid, were synthesized and their composition was confirmed using elemental, spectral, thermal and structural analyses. The {[Ag(Py2c)]} (AgPy2c, Py2c = pyrrole-2-carboxylate) and {[Ag(Fu2c)]} (AgFu2c, Fu2c = furan-2-carboxylate) solubility and stability in biological test stock solution were confirmed by H NMR spectroscopy. The X-ray analysis has enabled us to determine typical argentophilic interactions and bridging carboxylate coordination mode of both ligands.

The Aeolian cultural heritage preserves hundreds of testimonies of the past that have passed through six millennia of history. Among these, the Archeological Park of the Aeolian Islands with the Museum Luigi Bernabò Brea (Italy) preserves a valuable set of artworks, which are related to a little-known 'popular' figurative heritage. It is an assemblage of small glass foils decorated using the technique of reverse painting, datable to between the end of the 17 century and the end of the 18 century, and actually under investigation by historians.

The recent SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for novel point-of-care devices to be promptly used for a rapid and reliable large screening analysis of several biomarkers like genetic sequences and antibodies. Currently, one of the main limitations of rapid tests is the high percentage of false negatives in the presence of variants and, in particular for the Omicron one. We demonstrate in this work the detection of SARS-CoV-2 and the Omicron variant with a cost-effective silicon nanosensor enabling high sensitivity, selectivity, and fast response.

Herein we report the synthesis and biological properties of sugar-conjugated oligophenylene ethynylene (OPE) dyes, used as novel photosensitizers (PSs) for photodynamic treatment (PDT) under blue light. The OPE-bearing glycosides at both ends are successfully prepared by a Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. The live-cell imaging studies have shown that these OPE glycosides (including glucose, mannose and maltose derivatives) efficiently penetrate the cytoplasm of cultured HeLa cancer cells.

Ammonium ion/carboxylate ion pairing is a key interaction ubiquitous in biological systems, but amine recognition by ionizable molecular receptors, mediated by host-to-guest proton transfer, has too often been overlooked as a design element for molecular recognition. This survey will show that proton transfer mediated recognition is a powerful and versatile tool that can be made to work with different amines and diverse macrocyclic scaffolds, such as crown ethers, calixarenes or pillararenes. We will trace the history of this recognition motif since Cram's first report half a century ago down to the latest applications in supramolecular sensing, drug-delivery and materials science, highlighting along the way the impact of host-to-guest proton transfer on self-assembly and molecular recognition.

In this paper we describe the synthesis of a novel bichromophoric system in which an efficient photoinduced intercomponent energy transfer process is active. The dyad consists of one subunit of curcumin and one of BODIPY and is able to emit in the far-red region, offering a large Stokes shift, capable of limiting light scattering processes for applications in microscopy. The system has been encapsulated in MCM-41 nanoparticles with dimensions between 50 and 80 nm.

Background: The -SONH- group is of great significance in modern pharmaceutical use since, in sulfa-drugs, it is possible to introduce easily chemical modifications, and even small changes may lead to an improved version of an already existing drug.
Objective: This paper aims to describe updated information in the sulfonamide field with a particular focus on new mechanisms of action, especially if discovered by employing computational approaches.
Methods: Research articles that focused on the use of the sulfonamide moiety for the design, synthesis, and in vitro/in vivo tests of various diseases were collected from various search engines like PubMed, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Scopus, using keywords like sulfonamide moiety, aryl/heteroary lsulfonamides, alkyl sulfonamides, in silico drug design, etc.

The continuing accumulation of mutations in the RNA genome of the SARS-CoV-2 virus generates an endless succession of highly contagious variants that cause concern around the world due to their antibody resistance and the failure of current diagnostic techniques to detect them in a timely manner. Raman spectroscopy represents a promising alternative to variants detection and recognition techniques, thanks to its ability to provide a characteristic spectral fingerprint of the biological samples examined under all circumstances. In this work we exploit the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties of a silver dendrite layer to explore, for the first time to our knowledge, the distinctive features of the Omicron variant genome.
