The impact of COVID-19 infection on multiple sclerosis disease course across 12 countries: a propensity-score-matched cohort study.

Ther Adv Neurol Disord

November 2024

Department of Neuroscience, Central Clinical School, Monash University, 99 Commercial Road, Melbourne, VIC 3004, Australia.

Background: The relationship between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and multiple sclerosis (MS) relapse and disease progression remains unclear. Previous studies are limited by small sample sizes and most lack a propensity-matched control cohort.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of COVID-19 infection on MS disease course with a large propensity-matched cohort.

December 2024

OUTCOMEREA Research Group, Drancy, France; Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Medicale, Infection Antimicrobial Modelisation Evolution, U1137, Team Decision Science in Infectious Diseases, Paris, France; Assistance Publique Hôpitaux de Paris, Bichat hospital, Medical and infectious diseases ICU, F75018, Paris France. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Hospital-acquired bloodstream infections (HA-BSI) in ICU patients can be life-threatening, and this study aimed to see how early adequate antibiotic treatment affects 28-day mortality rates for patients who survive at least one day after infection onset.
  • Using data from a multicenter study with 2,418 patients, researchers found that those who received adequate treatment within 24 hours had a lower 28-day mortality rate (32.8%) compared to those who were inadequately treated (40%).
  • The study concluded that inadequate antibiotic therapy within 24 hours contributes significantly to 28-day mortality, indicating that quicker treatment could greatly improve patient outcomes in cases of HA-BSI.

Effect of Ki-67 proliferation index on survival in large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung.

Rev Assoc Med Bras (1992)

September 2024

Karadeniz Technical University, Farabi Hospital, Department of Medical Oncology - Trabzon, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the survival rates of patients with large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the lung, focusing on the Ki-67 proliferation index and other clinical characteristics.
  • The research involved 38 patients and found that factors like age, tumor location, metastasis at diagnosis, and treatment received could impact overall survival rates, though not significantly statistically.
  • It concludes that identifying specific subgroups with lower survival rates could aid in patient prognosis, but larger studies are necessary for more definitive insights.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the impact of kinesiology taping (KT) and low-Dye taping along with extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) on pain and function in patients suffering from plantar fasciitis (PF).
  • A total of 45 participants aged 18-65 were randomly assigned to three groups (KT, low-Dye, and control) and evaluated for pain and functionality before and after the treatment.
  • Results showed that both KT and low-Dye taping effectively reduced pain and improved functional scores, with low-Dye being more beneficial than the control group; however, neither taping method proved superior to the other.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed the epidemiological characteristics and treatment effectiveness of brucellosis in patients with different organ issues over a decade, focused on data from two medical centers.
  • The research included 297 patients, primarily farmers, highlighting that farming and raw dairy consumption were key transmission routes, with high positivity in diagnostic tests and various blood-related conditions reported.
  • Findings indicated that treatments with doxycycline combined with either streptomycin or rifampicin were equally effective, with similar relapse rates, suggesting that careful monitoring and longer treatment durations could help reduce the risk of relapse.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to evaluate the histopathologic findings of the Levator palpebralis superioris (LPS) muscle after biopsy and resection in patients with congenital ptosis, focusing on their relation to surgical outcomes.
  • A retrospective analysis involved 67 patients who underwent LPS resection, showing a significant improvement in margin-reflex distance (MRD-1) post-surgery, with an overall success rate of 80.3%.
  • The findings suggest that histopathological characteristics, particularly the percentage of fibrous tissue in the resected sample, may help predict surgical success in congenital ptosis cases.

Article Synopsis
  • Non-specific immunosuppressants (NSIS) are still widely used for treating multiple sclerosis (MS) despite safety concerns, particularly in resource-limited areas.
  • The study analyzed MSBase registry data to compare treatment outcomes of adults with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) using dimethyl fumarate (DMF) versus NSIS between January 2014 and April 2022.
  • Results showed that while annualized relapse rates were similar, DMF led to longer times before treatment discontinuation and confirmed disability progression, supporting its use over NSIS for RRMS patients.

Serotonergic (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) receptors play critical roles in neurological and psychological disorders such as schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, and Alzheimer's diseases. Therefore, it is particularly important to develop novel radioligands or modify the existing ones to identify the serotonergic receptors involved in psychiatric disorders. Among the 16 subtypes of serotonergic systems, only technetium-99m based radiopharmaceuticals have been evaluated for serotonin-1A (5-HT), serotonin-2A (5-HT), 5-HT heterodimers and serotonin receptor neurotransmitter (SERT).
