Article Synopsis
  • - Bone stress injuries (BSIs) are overuse injuries that occur when there's repetitive strain on bone, either from excessive physical activity on healthy bone or normal activity on already weakened bone, often seen in younger athletes and those with medical conditions affecting bone density.
  • - Stress fractures are a severe form of BSIs, representing about 20% of cases and show clear signs on imaging; untreated, they can lead to complete fractures, with the main symptoms being localized pain and tenderness in response to increased physical loads.
  • - Treatment involves early intervention, focusing on modifying risk factors like nutrition and activity; imaging such as X-rays and MRIs help confirm BSIs, with management approaches varying based on the injury's severity and location, necessitating specialist

Background: Liver disease assessment is a key aspect of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection pre-treatment evaluation but guidelines differ on the optimal testing modality given trade-offs in availability and accuracy. We compared clinical outcomes and cost-effectiveness of common fibrosis staging strategies.

Methods: We simulated adults with chronic HCV receiving care at US health centers through a lifetime microsimulation across five strategies: (1) no staging or treatment (comparator), (2) indirect serum biomarker testing (Fibrosis-4 index [FIB-4]) only, (3) transient elastography (TE) only, (4) staged approach: FIB-4 for all, TE only for intermediate FIB-4 scores (1.

Purpose: There is limited caregiver-reported evidence determining health care transition (HCT) outcomes for their adolescents/young adults with special health care needs (AYA-SHCN). A subcommittee of the International and Interdisciplinary Healthcare Transition Research Consortium aimed to identify multidimensional outcomes of a successful HCT among AYA-SHCN based on parents/caregivers' perspectives.

Methods: After literature review and expert interviews, a three-stage Delphi process identified HCT outcomes based on parents/caregivers' perspectives.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) and liver cancer are two of the leading causes of cancer death in the United States and persistent disparities in CRC and liver cancer incidence and outcomes exist. Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is one of the main contributors to liver cancer. Effective screening for both CRC and HCV exist and are recommended for individuals based upon age, regardless of gender or sex assigned at birth.

This study aimed to characterize the prevalence of eating disorders (EDs), disturbed eating behaviors (DEBs), and emotional eating attitudes (EEAs) among patients affected by endometriosis in order to understand a potential crosslink between this impacting gynecological disease and a Body Mass Index shift. A total of 30 patients were recruited at an endometriosis outpatient clinic in Bologna and were assessed by using standardized instruments and specific questionnaires for EDs, DEBs, and EEAs. Sociodemographic information and endometriosis clinical features and history information were collected by adopting a specific questionnaire.

Importance: Uncontrolled hypertension (ie, a 24-hour ambulatory systolic blood pressure of ≥130 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure of ≥80 mm Hg or clinic systolic blood pressure of ≥140 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure of ≥90 mm Hg) in young adults is a US public health burden.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of a telephone coaching and blood pressure self-monitoring intervention compared with usual care on changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressures and behaviors at 6 and 12 months.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This randomized clinical trial included male and female participants aged 18 to 39 years with uncontrolled hypertension confirmed by 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure testing.

Low-income women of color receive fewer cancer screenings and have higher rates of depression, which can interfere with cancer screening participation. This study assessed the comparative effectiveness of two interventions for improving colorectal, breast, and cervical cancer screening participation and reducing depression among underserved women in Bronx, NY, with depression. This comparative effectiveness randomized controlled trial (RCT) with assessments at study entry, 6, and 12 months utilized an intent-to-treat statistical approach.

Erosive Hand Osteoarthritis: Incidence and Predictive Characteristics Among Participants in the Osteoarthritis Initiative.

Arthritis Rheumatol

November 2021

Care New England Medical Group Family Care Center and Internal Medicine, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, and Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify risk factors for developing erosive hand osteoarthritis (OA) over 48 months, focusing on factors like age, sex, race, and overall bone health.
  • A longitudinal cohort analysis of 3,365 participants showed that 2.6% developed erosive hand OA, with significant risks including older age, female sex, and increased OA severity.
  • The findings suggest that erosive hand OA is more prevalent in older women and linked to structural damage in the joints, indicating a connection between thinner bones and the progression of the disease.

Purpose: A needs assessment of family caregivers (CGs) in our gynecologic oncology clinic found that 50% of CGs report nine or more distressing unmet needs, but only 19% of patients had a documented CG. We conducted an ASCO Quality Training Program project with the following aims: (1) to identify and document primary CGs for 85% of patients within two clinic visits of a gynecologic cancer diagnosis, and (2) assess the needs of and provide interventions to 75% of identified family CGs.

Methods: Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) methodology and tools endorsed by the ASCO Quality Training Program were used.

J Nurs Care Qual

July 2017

Family Practice, Greater Elgin Family Care Center, Elgin, Illinois (Drs Seol and Thompson); Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Nutrition, Duke University Medical Center (Dr Kreider); and School of Nursing, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina (Drs Kreider and Vorderstrasse).

The burden of diabetes is greater for minorities and medically underserved populations in the United States. An evidence-based provider-delivered diabetes self-management education intervention was implemented in a federally qualified health center for medically underserved adult patients with type 2 diabetes. The findings provide support for the efficacy of the intervention on improvement in self-management behaviors and glycemic control among underserved patients with diabetes, while not substantially changing provider visit time or workload.

Non-adherence with self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) among teenagers with type 1 diabetes can be a problem. The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of using Internet-based incentives to improve adherence with SMBG in non-adherent teenagers. Participants were randomly assigned to contingent (CS; N = 23), where they had to meet web camera-verified SMBG goals to earn incentives, or non-contingent (NS) groups (N = 18), where they earned incentives independent of adherence.
