Nanoscale materials have been extensively employed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. However, the developed nanosystems still suffer from some limitations, namely the rapid elimination by the immune system, lack of targeting to specific cells, and insufficient biocompatibility. Therefore, novel strategies based upon a biomimetic approach have received attention to improving the pharmacokinetics and safety profile of nanosystems.

Purpose: Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive breast cancer strongly associated with BRCA mutation. Standard neoadjuvant chemotherapy remains the standard of care for early stage TNBC, the optimal chemotherapy regimen is still a matter of discussion. Other agents, such as poly-ADP-ribosyl polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibodies were evaluated in the neoadjuvant setting.

The use of essential oils has gained importance due to their wide range of biological properties. Essential oils comprise a complex mixture of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), so the study of VOCs as active pharmaceutical ingredients is often more precise and fruitful. VOCs are natural origin molecules that constitute a sustainable alternative to synthetic drugs due to their important therapeutic value.

Parenteral formulations are indispensable in clinical practice and often are the only option to administer drugs that cannot be administrated through other routes, such as proteins and certain anticancer drugs - which are indispensable to treat some of the most prevailing chronic diseases worldwide (like diabetes and cancer). Additionally, parenteral formulations play a relevant role in emergency care since they are the only ones that provide an immediate action of the drug after its administration. However, the development of parenteral formulations is a complex task owing to the specific quality and safety requirements set for these preparations and the intrinsic properties of the drugs.

Diabetic wounds are one of the most common health problems worldwide, enhancing the demand for new management strategies. Nanotechnology, as a developing subject in diabetic wound healing, is proving to be a promising and effective tool in treatment and care. It is, therefore, necessary to ascertain the available and distinct nanosystems and evaluate their performance when topically applied to the injury site, especially in diabetic wound healing.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory non-contagious disease normally characterized by a multisystemic inflammation with reddish plaques and whitish scales with greater incidence in the knees, feet and hands, elbow, scalp, and sacral areas. The global incidence of psoriasis rounds about 2% of the population and it is established that the pathophysiology of this skin disease is quite complex and still misunderstood. Nowadays, this pathology still has no cure, however, efforts are being made to find more effective and safe treatments as well as trying to decrease the occurrence of crises and complications.

Thyroid cancer in humans has a fast-growing prevalence, with the most common lethal endocrine malignancy for unknown reasons The current study was aimed to perform qualitative and quantitative investigation and characterization of the gut bacterial composition of euthyroid thyroid cancer patients. The fecal samples were collected from sixteen euthyroid thyroid cancer patients and ten from healthy subjects. The PCR-DGGE was conducted by targetting the V3 region of 16S rRNA gene, as well as real-time PCR for and were carried.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection affecting women worldwide. This infection is characterized by the loss of the dominant Lactobacillus community in the vaginal microbiota and an increase of anaerobic bacteria, that leads to the formation of a polymicrobial biofilm, mostly composed of Gardnerella spp. Treatment of BV is normally performed using broad-spectrum antibiotics, such as metronidazole and clindamycin.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic disease that affects the skin, and that is characterized by highly itchy inflammation, frequent eczematous lesions, and a fluctuating course. The current treatment consists of a multi-stage approach that aims to establish persistent disease control towards the improvement of the quality of life of the patients. Topical therapy is the basis of AD treatment, however, due to the difficulty of crossing the skin barrier, topical application of drugs remains a challenge.

Bile acids (BA) have shown promising effects in animal models of obesity. However, the said effects are thought to rely on a thermogenic effect, which is questionably present in humans. A previous work has shown that the BA chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) can revert obesity and accelerate metabolism in animal and cell culture models.

The use of nanotechnology has been extensively explored for developing efficient drug delivery systems towards topical and transdermal applications. Ethosomes constitute a vesicular nanocarrier containing a relatively high concentration of ethanol (20-45%). Ethanol is a well-known permeation enhancer, which confers ethosomes unique features, including high elasticity and deformability, allowing them to penetrate deeply across the skin and enhance drug permeation and deposition.

Background And Aim: Honey has been recognized worldwide for its antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Among them, the antifungal properties associated to honey make it an attractive alternative treatment for -associated infections, particularly for topical application to the mucous membranes and skin. In this sense, the main purpose of this work was to evaluate physicochemical properties of five Portuguese honeys and Manuka honey (an Australian honey with well recognized medical proprieties, used as control) and to evaluate the antifungal activity in species planktonic and biofilm assays.
