Metabolic syndrome and psoriatic arthritis among patients with psoriasis vulgaris: Quality of life and prevalence.

Oxidative stress and fatty acid profile in Wistar rats subjected to acute food restriction and refeeding with high-fat diets.

Purpose: To assess oxidative stress and the profile of fatty acids incorporated into the hepatic tissue of animals refed with high-fat (HF) diets after acute food restriction.

Methods: Fifty male Wistar rats were divided into five groups and fasting for 48 hours. One group was sacrificed without refeeding (NR), a control group (C) was refed with the standard AIN-93 diet and the remaining groups with HF diets respectively consisting of hydrogenated vegetable oil (PHVO), trans-free (TF) margarine and trans-free margarine enriched with ω-3 and ω-6 (O).

Clinical Characteristics of 130 Patients With Hepatocellular Carcinoma Followed at a Tertiary Hospital From Brazil.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary malignant tumor of the liver that represents a serious public health problem all over the world, corresponding to the third cause of cancer death worldwide. The object was to present the clinical characteristics and follow-up of patients with HCC attended at the University Hospital of the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirao Preto-USP (HCFMRP-USP), Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Methods: Epidemiological and clinical data were revised from medical records.

Adaptation and initial psychometric study of the self-report version of Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS-SR).

Objective: The objectives of the present study were to adapt the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale from the clinician administered to the self-report version (LSAS-SR) and to perform the initial psychometric studies concerning internal consistency and item analysis.

Methods: The phase of adaptation was performed by two specialists in the Mental Health area and the face validity was tested by a group of 30 university students. As part of the psychometric study of the LSAS-SR, the internal consistency was assessed and the items were analyzed by applying the scale to 682 university students.

PP071. Evaluation of maternal-fetal doppler parameters and of whole blood nitrite throughout gestation.

Introduction: The Doppler method is extensively applied today for the evaluation of pregnancies with involvement of the uteroplacental blood flow. Although increased nitric oxide (NO) formation plays an important role in regulation of systemic vascular resistance during pregnancy, growing evidence indicates that reduced NO formation is associated with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, especially preeclampsia.

Objectives: The studies were to assess the maternal and fetal Doppler parameters and to determine the whole blood nitrite levels during pregnancy.

Regeneration of the corneal epithelium after debridement of its central region: an autoradiographic study on rabbits.

Purpose: To investigate the proliferative behavior of the corneal and limbal epithelia after debridement on the central region of the rabbit cornea.

Methods: After scraping a circular epithelial area, 5 mm in diameter, in the center of the cornea, ([3]) H-thymidine ( ([3]) H-TdR) was injected intravitreally, and the rabbits killed from 1 to 49 days afterward. The cornea, together with the adjacent conjunctiva, was processed for autoradiography.

Can an adequate energy intake be able to reverse the negative nitrogen balance in mechanically ventilated critically ill patients?

Purpose: Adequate energy provision and nitrogen losses prevention of critically ill patients are essentials for treatment and recovery. The aims of this study were to evaluate energy expenditure (EE) and nitrogen balance (NB) of critically ill patients, to classify adequacy of energy intake (EI), and to verify adequacy of EI capacity to reverse the negative NB.

Despite the probable inhibitory effects of GnRH analogues on ovarian steroidogenesis in vitro, their association with assisted reproduction protocols shows favorable results. This suggests that there are important differences in the behaviors of these drugs when administered in vivo versus in vitro. Otologic symptoms of temporomandibular disorder and effect of orofacial myofunctional therapy.

The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of otologic symptoms and their relationship to orofacial signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD), and the effect of orofacial myofunctional therapy. The study was conducted on eight asymptomatic subjects (Group C) and 20 subjects with articular TMD, randomly distributed over two groups: one treated using orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT Group) and a control group with TMD (Group CTMD). Patient selection was based upon the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD).

Role of cytokines in mediating mechanical hypernociception in a model of delayed-type hypersensitivity in mice.

In the present study, we used the electronic version of the von Frey test to investigate the role of cytokines (TNF-alpha and IL-1beta) and chemokines (KC/CXCL-1) in the genesis of mechanical hypernociception during antigen-induced inflammation in mice.
