Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynaecologic tumours, but the molecular and especially epigenetic events underlying the transformation are poorly understood. Various methylation changes have been identified and show promise as potential cancer biomarkers. The aim of this study was to investigate promoter methylation of selected tumour suppressor genes in ovarian cancer by comparison with normal ovarian tissue.

Microdialysis has been utilized for nutritive blood flow measurements, but both the advantages and disadvantages of various approaches have not been evaluated in parallel in the stomach yet. Our aim was to compare the (3)H(2)O efflux technique with biochemical monitoring during temporary celiac artery occlusion in anesthetized rats. Microdialysis probes were implanted in the gastric submucosa and perfused with (3)H(2)O; samples were analyzed for β-activity, glucose, lactate, pyruvate and glycerol.

Background: Current research is engaged in innovative technologies of extracorporeal circulation (ECC) systems in an effort to eliminate negative effects. Some studies have shown that, due to the complexity of technical settings of mini-ECC, they invoke a weaker immune response compared to classic ECC. The clinical benefits of using these systems have not been clearly proven yet.

Aims: Psychiatric disorders and treatment with conventional antipsychotic medications have been associated with venous thromboembolism, but only a few data on recent antipsychotics such as olanzapine are available.
Methods: We describe four subjects treated with olanzapine who developed venous thromboembolism, and were hospitalized at the University Hospital in Hradec Kralove during the period 2004-2006.
Results: We found a combination of several clinical and laboratory risk factors in our patients.

Introduction: When checking tumour growth, a number of observations indicate that the immune system plays a significant role in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Infiltration by lymphocytes (tumour infiltrating lymphocytes, TILs) is more prevalent in RCC than any other tumours. T lymphocytes are the dominant population of TIL cells.

Background: Myeloid cells are extensively activated in patients undergoing cardiosurgical operations. It is supposed that this activation is more profound in patients operated with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) ("on-pump") in comparison with patients operated without CPB ("off-pump").
Aims: To evaluate changes in the expression of a novel activation marker expressed on myeloid cells recognized by MEM-148 antibody.

Tumour progression requires the presence of a rich vascular supply. A number of cytokines, chemokines and proteases participate in the process of tumour angiogenesis. We evaluated serum levels of angiogenin, panGRO (Growth Related Oncogene) (CXCL 1,2,3) and ENA-78 (Epithelial Neutrophil Activating) (CXCL5) in the serum of 32 patients with RCC (renal cell carcinoma) and 14 healthy blood donors by means of a protein array analysis.

Administration of antipsychotics appears to be related to increased risk of venous thromboembolism and cerebrovascular side effects. The biological mechanism responsible for this possible adverse drug reaction is unknown, but there is a growing number of elucidating hypotheses. Treatment with antipsychotics is associated with elevation of prolactin level.

During shock, exposure of gut to ischemia determines patient's survival. Ischemic preconditioning (ISP) elevates nitric oxide and blood perfusion, whereby it protects organs against subsequent severe ischemia/reperfusion. Using appropriate flow marker, microdialysis may serve to monitor interstitial microcirculation.
