The coexistence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and tuberculosis (TB) presents a significant global burden, with DM being recognized as a major risk factor for TB. This review comprehensively analyzes the immunological aspects of DM-TB comorbidity, shedding light on the impact of DM on TB pathogenesis and immune responses. It reveals that high blood glucose levels in TB patients contribute to reduced innate immune cell count, compromised phagocytic function, and delayed antigen presentation.

Article Synopsis
  • - Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a rare genetic disorder that leads to issues like retinal problems, skin changes, and hardened arteries, primarily due to calcification beneath the retina, which can cause macular degeneration.
  • - Researchers created and studied two specific induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) lines from a PXE patient, focusing on retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells to compare their features with those of healthy cells.
  • - Initial findings showed that PXE-specific RPE cells have increased pigmentation and poorer barrier and phagocytic functions compared to healthy controls, suggesting factors that contribute to macular degeneration in PXE patients, with further validation needed in more patients.

Department of Orthopedics, Unit of Musculoskeletal Surgery, Tampere University Hospital, Elämänaukio 2, 33520 Tampere, Finland; Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology Tampere University, Arvo Ylpön katu 34, 33520 Finland; Coxa Hospital for Joint Replacement, Niveltie 4, 33520 Tampere, Finland.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between the location of medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) injuries and the recurrence of patellar dislocation in patients who experienced a first-time traumatic incident.
  • A total of 64 patients were followed for three years, during which MRI diagnosed their MPFL injuries and monitored for re-dislocations, range of motion, and daily symptoms.
  • Results showed that 51.6% of patients experienced at least one re-dislocation, but the location of the MPFL injury did not significantly influence the timing or rate of these re-dislocations, indicating that injury location may not be a reliable predictor of recurrence.

Background: Acute ischemic stroke may be due to embolism from ruptured atherosclerotic carotid arteries. DNA of oral bacteria, mainly the viridans streptococci group, has been detected in thrombus aspirates of patients with ischemic stroke as well as in carotid endarterectomy samples. Because viridans streptococci are known to possess thrombogenic properties, we studied whether their presence in thrombus aspirates and in carotid artery specimens can be confirmed using bacterial immunohistochemistry.

Tumor infiltrating lymphocyte stratification of prognostic staging of early-stage triple negative breast cancer.

NPJ Breast Cancer

January 2022

Service de Biostatistique et d'Epidémiologie, Gustave Roussy, Oncostat U1018, Inserm, Paris-Saclay University, labeled Ligue Contre le Cancer, Villejuif, France.

The importance of integrating biomarkers into the TNM staging has been emphasized in the 8 Edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) Staging system. In a pooled analysis of 2148 TNBC-patients in the adjuvant setting, TILs are found to strongly up and downstage traditional pathological-staging in the Pathological and Clinical Prognostic Stage Groups from the AJJC 8 edition Cancer Staging System. This suggest that clinical and research studies on TNBC should take TILs into account in addition to stage, as for example patients with stage II TNBC and high TILs have a better outcome than patients with stage I and low TILs.
