Background: Bronchoalveolar lavage is a useful bronchoscopy technique. However, studies in "normal" children populations are few. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory effects of exogenous pulmonary surfactants on the bronchoalveolar cellular components are limited.

Repeated airway dilatation may be a lifesaving intervention until such point that surgery can be performed.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major risk factor for developing tuberculosis (TB). TB-DM comorbidity is expected to pose a serious future health problem due to the alarming rise in global DM incidence. At present, the causal underlying mechanisms linking DM and TB remain unclear.

Importance: Lumbar puncture (LP) failure rates vary and can be as high as 65%. Ultrasound guidance could increase the success of performing LP.
Objective: To summarise the evidence on the use of ultrasound guidance versus palpation method for LP.

Introduction: Osteoporosis (OP) risk factor assessment and bone mineral density (BMD) testing are frequently omitted at baseline in aromatase inhibitor (AI) studies, which may lead to misinterpretation of AI associated bone loss. The present study describes bone health of South African postmenopausal women of predominantly Mixed Ancestry, prior to AI treatment.
Methods: This descriptive baseline study, nested in a prospective AI cohort study, included postmenopausal women with endocrine sensitive breast cancer, aged 50 to 80 years.

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive pleural or peritoneal tumour almost always caused by exposure to asbestos fibres. Exposure to asbestos can cause malignant mesothelioma 30-40 years after exposure. A description of sources of exposure is important for prevention and possible financial compensation.

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major risk factor for development of tuberculosis (TB), however the underlying molecular foundations are unclear. Since lipids play a central role in the development of both DM and TB, lipid metabolism may be important for TB-DM pathophysiology.
Methods: A H NMR spectroscopy-based platform was used to determine 225 lipid and other metabolic intermediates in plasma samples of healthy controls (n = 50) and patients with TB (n = 50), DM (n = 50) or TB-DM (n = 27).

Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the differences in three-dimensional pelvic and hip kinematics during a single-leg drop-landing task in active sports participants with long-standing groin pain compared to healthy matched controls.
Design: This was a descriptive study incorporating a cross-sectional design.
Setting: The study was conducted at the Unit for Human Movement Analysis, Stellenbosch University, South Africa.

Introduction: Many patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are thought to be undiagnosed and untreated, leading to poor health outcomes. Increasing rates of diagnosis and treatment, with consequent improvements in the quality of life of people with PD in SSA requires an understanding of how PD is perceived and conceptualized within communities.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among a group of Xhosa speaking black South Africans.

Background: Genetics play a significant role in drug metabolism of endocrine therapy of breast cancer. These aspects have been studied extensively in patients on tamoxifen, but the pharmacogenetics of aromatase inhibitors are less established. In contrast to the protective effect of tamoxifen, aromatase inhibitors are linked with an increased risk for bone loss and fractures.

Background: Little is known about allied health (AH) clinical practice guideline (CPG) activity in South Africa, and particularly in relation to primary health care (PHC). This paper reports on a scoping study undertaken to establish a reference framework, from which a comprehensive maximum variation sample could be selected. This was required to underpin robust sampling for a qualitative study aimed at understanding South African primary care AH therapy CPG activities.

Background: Real-time PCR (qPCR) based methods, such as the Xpert MTB/RIF, are increasingly being used to diagnose tuberculosis (TB). While qualitative methods are adequate for diagnosis, the therapeutic monitoring of TB patients requires quantitative methods currently performed using smear microscopy. The potential use of quantitative molecular measurements for therapeutic monitoring has been investigated but findings have been variable and inconclusive.

Damage to the gut mucosa is a probable contributory cause of death from ingested Po. Therefore, medical products are needed that can prevent, mitigate, and/or repair gastrointestinal (GI) damage caused by high-LET radiation emitted by Po. The present studies investigated the capacity of a diet highly enriched with vitamins A, C, and E (vitamin ACE) to protect against intestinal mucosal damage indicated by functional reductions in nutrient transport caused by orally ingested Po.
