Background: The National Hockey League (NHL) saw an unprecedented disruption to the competitive calendar due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020. Returning to play following an abrupt cessation of activity is a known risk factor for athletes.

Purpose: To analyze the occurrence and severity of events (injury and illness) in the NHL and to understand any differences in occurrence and severity between pre-pandemic seasons and seasons that immediately followed.

Autosomal dominant Fanconi syndrome due to a variant (GATM-FS), causes accumulation of misfolded arginine-glycine amidinotransferase (AGAT) in proximal renal tubules leading to cellular injury. GATM-FS presents during childhood and progresses to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in adults. We study creatine metabolism in two individuals of unrelated families with a known variant and the effect of creatine supplementation in kidney organoids.

Chest

October 2024

Division of Pulmonary Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada; G.F. MacDonald Centre for Lung Health, Covenant Health, Edmonton, AB, Canada. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Aerobic exercise training is thought to not affect lung structure or function, but the study explores the link between pulmonary vascular health and exercise capacity (VO2peak).
  • Researchers examined data from participants in the CanCOLD study, looking at factors like CT blood vessel volumes and pulmonary diffusing capacity in different groups (never-smokers, ever-smokers, and those with COPD).
  • The findings indicate that aspects of pulmonary vascular structure and function are significantly related to VO2peak, even in individuals with COPD, suggesting these associations extend beyond just airflow limitations.

Telepharmacy, utilizing telecommunications to dispense pharmaceutical products and deliver patient care, offers numerous benefits for both the public and pharmacists. Previous research on exploring attitudes and willingness to use telepharmacy services has primarily focused on pharmacists rather than the general population. This study is aimed at assessing the attitudes and willingness of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) population to utilize telepharmacy services and identifying the factors influencing their inclination to use these services.

August 2024

Division of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, Department of Surgery University of Alberta, 1E4 University of Alberta Hospital Edmonton AB Canada.

Objective: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is a rare presentation requiring timely diagnosis and treatment. Despite recommendations against obtaining computed tomography (CT) imaging of the head in clinical practice guidelines, this investigation is often completed in patients with sudden hearing loss. The aim of this study was to determine the proportion of patients undergoing CT imaging of the head for SSNHL at our center and identify predictive factors for the use of CT imaging.

Background/objectives: Transitions to and from Emergency Departments (EDs) can be detrimental to long-term care (LTC) residents and burden the healthcare system. While reducing avoidable transfers is imperative, various terms are used interchangeably including inappropriate, preventable, or unnecessary transitions. Our study objectives were to develop a conceptual definition of avoidable LTC-ED transitions and to verify the level of stakeholder agreement with this definition.

Article Synopsis
  • Sinus venosus atrial septal defect (SVASD) is a rare heart condition, making up 5% to 10% of atrial septal defects, with surgical closure being the standard treatment despite limited data on outcomes.
  • A systematic review of 40 studies involving 1,320 patients revealed very low in-hospital (0.24%) and 30-day (0.5%) mortality rates, while long-term complications included atrial fibrillation (3.3%) and sinus node dysfunction (6.5%).
  • This analysis provides the first comprehensive overview of SVASD repair outcomes, supporting the effectiveness of surgery and setting a benchmark for evaluating new transcatheter treatments.

This paper examines the contentious issue of using contracted surgical facilities (CSFs) for scheduled eye surgeries within Canada's publicly funded healthcare system. Despite the debate over the use of CSFs, there is a stark lack of Canadian-focused empirical evidence to guide policy decisions. This paper uses the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's healthcare system performance conceptual model - access, quality and cost/expenditures - as a framework to explore the debates surrounding CSFs.

Background: Cabozantinib, an oral multi-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), has demonstrated efficacy in metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). The association between toxicity and therapeutic effectiveness has been established with other TKIs. We investigated whether cabozantinib dose reductions, a surrogate for toxicity and adequate drug exposure, were associated with improved clinical outcomes in mRCC.

Background Identifying new therapeutic targets for preventing the myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury would have profound implications in cardiovascular medicine. Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury remains a major clinical burden in patients with coronary artery disease. Methods and Results We studied several key mechanistic pathways known to mediate cardioprotection in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion in 2 independent genetic models with reduced cardiac phosphoinositide 3-kinase-α (PI3Kα) activity.
