Background And Aims: Vitamin D deficiency impacts a significant proportion of the world's population, and this deficiency has been linked to various conditions characterized by imbalanced serotonin regulation. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on serum serotonin levels.

Methods: We conducted a comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Central for Randomized Clinical Trials, and Web of Science up to September 2022, without any language restrictions.

The largest documented outbreak of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome occurred in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Croatia, in 2021, marking the first-time cases of hantavirus infection recorded outside of the known endemic region in the north of the county. To identify the factors contributing to the spread of the outbreak and to compare risk factors for acquiring hantavirus infection in the endemic and newly affected regions. A total of 189 cases were confirmed by positive Puumala IgM/IgG antibodies (93.

The objectives of the study were to estimate the current exposure to cadmium (Cd) in Europe, potential differences between the countries and geographic regions, determinants of exposure and to derive European exposure levels. The basis for this work was provided by the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU) which established a framework for alignment of national or regional HBM studies. For the purpose of Cd exposure assessment, studies from 9 European countries (Iceland, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Croatia, Portugal, Germany, France, Luxembourg) were included and urine of 20-39 years old adults sampled in the years 2014-2021 (n = 2510).

Increasing evidence points to host genetics as a factor in COVID-19 prevalence and outcome. CCR5 is a receptor for proinflammatory chemokines that are involved in host responses, especially to viruses. The CCR5-delta32 minor allele is an interesting variant, given the role of CCR5 in some viral infections, particularly HIV-1.

Purpose: The goal of total hip endoprosthesis is to achieve painless and functional hip for long term. Accurate reconstruction of hip anatomy largely depends on the implant design. In order to select an implant in correspondence with the native hip, the proximal femoral morphology has been in focus of many studies in the past years.

Aim: To evaluate the association between the FokI (rs2228570), ApaI (rs7975232), Bsml (rs1544410), TaqI (rs 731236), and Cdx2 (rs11568820) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene and spontaneous preterm birth (SPTB), as well as their effect on clinical characteristics of women with SPTB and their newborns.

Methods: This case-control study enrolled women who gave birth at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University Medical Center Ljubljana between 2010 to 2019. Acta Med Acad

April 2020

Department of Medical Physics and Biophysics, Faculty of Medicine University of Rijeka, Rijeka, Croatia, and Department of Physics, University of Rijeka, Rijeka, Croatia.

Objective: To investigate whether the students' study-success correlates with the achievements evaluated in the enrolment process based on the State Graduation Exam.

Methods: The retrospective study included a total of 637 students enrolled in the study of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine from the academic year 2010-11 to 2014-15. We analysed the structure of students enrolled on the basis of the State Graduation Exam, examined their success in two courses of the study programme and then correlated this study-success with individual admission parameters.

The significance of serum thyroglobulin measurement before and after the treatment of toxic nodular goiter with 131I.

Nucl Med Commun

April 2020

Department of Nuclear Medicine, Faculty of Medicine University of Rijeka, Clinical Department of Nuclear Medicine, Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka, Rijeka, Croatia.

Objectives: Thyroglobulin is routinely used as a tumor marker in follow up of patients with thyroid carcinoma, but is also elevated in patients with toxic nodular goiter. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of thyroglobulin measurement prior to and after the radioiodine therapy (RIT) in patients with toxic nodular goiter and to compare the results with the therapy outcome.

Patients And Methods: In 109 patients with toxic nodular goiter (102 females, 7 males, aged 45-85 years), 61 with multinodular toxic goiter and 48 with toxic adenoma, thyroglobulin level was measured before RIT and during the first 12 months after the treatment and compared to therapy outcome, defined as euthyroid, hypothyroid and persistent hyperthyroidism.

Background: Older persons often have interacting physical and social problems and complex care needs. An integrated care approach in the local context with collaborations between community-, social-, and health-focused organisations can contribute to the promotion of independent living and quality of life. In the Urban Health Centres Europe (UHCE) project, five European cities (Greater Manchester, United Kingdom; Pallini (in Greater Athens Area), Greece; Rijeka, Croatia; Rotterdam, the Netherlands; and Valencia, Spain) develop and implement a care template that integrates health and social care and includes a preventive approach.

The Müller type cemented hip prosthesis, also called self-locking prosthesis, is one of the most extensively copied and utilized hip prostheses. Considering the implantation of the cemented stem, the author originally suggested achieving a press fit between the stem and endostal cortex by implanting a prosthesis of the largest possible size. Analyzing our group of patients who undergo aseptic stem revision, we try to quantify the term "press fit" by measuring the filling of the femoral canal by the metal stem, the so-called canal-fill ratio.
