The development of DNA-based methods in recent decades has opened the door to numerous new lines of research in the biological sciences. While the speed and accuracy of DNA methodologies are clearly beneficial, the sensitivity of these methods has the adverse effect of increased susceptibility to false positives resulting from contamination in field or lab. Here, we present findings from a metabarcoding study on the diet of and food availability for five insectivorous birds, in which multiple lepidopteran species not known to occur locally were discovered.

Background: Despite immense progress in artificial intelligence (AI) models, there has been limited deployment in health care environments. The gap between potential and actual AI applications is likely due to the lack of translatability between controlled research environments (where these models are developed) and clinical environments for which the AI tools are ultimately intended.

Objective: We previously developed the Translational Evaluation of Healthcare AI (TEHAI) framework to assess the translational value of AI models and to support successful transition to health care environments.

Proper deposition of the extracellular matrix and its major components, the collagens, is essential for endochondral ossification and bone mass accrual. Collagen prolyl 4-hydroxylases (C-P4Hs) hydroxylate proline residues in the -X-Pro-Gly- repeats of all known collagen types. Their product, 4-hydroxyproline, is essential for correct folding and thermal stability of the triple-helical collagen molecules in physiological body temperatures.

Article Synopsis
  • - Individuals with smaller vertebral dimensions are at a higher risk for vertebral fractures, and obesity may influence both bone size and fracture risk across a person's lifespan.
  • - The study utilized data from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 over 46 years, focusing on 780 participants who underwent lumbar MRI at age 46 and had their BMI tracked from childhood to adulthood.
  • - Researchers identified three distinct BMI trajectory groups ("stable slim," "stable average," and "early onset overweight") and found that those in the stable average and early onset overweight groups had significantly larger vertebral cross-sectional areas compared to the stable slim group.
