Arthroscopic meniscal surgery in Norway from 2010 to 2020: A paradigmatic shift.

Purpose: Meniscal injuries in the knee are usually treated surgically with arthroscopic partial resection (APR) or arthroscopic repair (AR). APR has been shown to increase the risk of osteoarthritis and the focus has shifted to repairing the meniscus with AR. The extent of this shift is yet to be established and an analysis of incidence rates (IR) of APR and AR for meniscal injuries could highlight this.

Feeding difficulties, food intake, and growth in children with esophageal atresia.

Objectives: Challenges regarding feeding difficulties and nutrition in children with esophageal atresia (EA) have been sparsely studied. The aim of this study was to explore parent-reported feeding difficulties in children with EA by applying Montreal Children's Hospital-Feeding Scale (MCH-FS), and to further explore associations between feeding difficulties and clinical factors, growth and nutritional intake.

Methods: Parents of EA children born between 2012 and 2017 were invited.

Asymmetric right ventricular myocardial work correlates with gold standard measurements of cardiac function in pulmonary hypertension.

Right ventricular (RV) (dys)function determines outcomes in pulmonary hypertension (PH). We previously found that asymmetric RV myocardial work (MW) corresponds with inefficient RV function in experimental PH models. We therefore aimed to investigate regional distribution of RV MW and its correlation with catheter hemodynamics in children with PH.

Immediate or delayed trial without catheter in acute urinary retention in males: A systematic review.

Objective: To compare the success of establishing spontaneous micturition following immediate trial without catheter (TWOC) to delayed TWOC in males catheterized for acute urinary retention.

Materials And Methods: In this systematic review, we included studies reporting success rates of immediate TWOC or delayed TWOC (≤30 days) among males ≥18 years of age catheterized for acute urinary retention. We excluded studies on suprapubic catheterization, postoperative/perioperative catheterization and urinary retention related to trauma.

The association between pre-diagnostic levels of psychological distress and adverse effects after radical prostatectomy.

Objectives: To prospectively analyse the associations between pre-diagnostic levels of anxiety and depression and patient-reported urinary and sexual adverse effects after radical prostatectomy in a population-based setting.

Patients And Methods: In three Norwegian county hospitals, men referred with a suspicion of prostate cancer were asked to fill out a patient-reported outcome measurement (PROM) questionnaire prior to prostate biopsy. Those who later underwent radical prostatectomy were stratified into three distress groups according to their Hopkins Symptom Checklist 5-score.

A global metabolomics minefield: Confounding effects of preanalytical factors when studying rare disorders.

A common challenge when studying rare diseases or medical conditions is the limited number of patients, usually resulting in long inclusion periods as well as unequal sampling and storage conditions. The main purpose of this study was to demonstrate the challenges when comparing samples subject to different preanalytical conditions. We performed a global (commonly referred to as "untargeted") liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry metabolomics analysis of blood samples from cases of sudden infant death syndrome and controls stored as dried blood spots on a chemical-free filter card for 15 years at room temperature compared with the same blood samples stored as whole blood at -80°C before preparing new dried blood spots using a chemically treated filter card.

Endocortical Trabecularization in Acromegaly: The Cause for the Paradoxically Increased Vertebral Fracture Risk?

Growth hormone (GH) is nonphysiologically increased in acromegaly, stimulating target tissues directly and indirectly via insulin-like growth factor type 1 (IGF-1). Despite GH having anabolic effects on bone growth and renewal, the risk of vertebral fractures is paradoxically increased in acromegaly. We hypothesized that bone tissue compartments were differentially affected by hormonal alterations in active and controlled acromegaly.

Carotid Plaque Score for Stroke and Cardiovascular Risk Prediction in a Middle-Aged Cohort From the General Population.

Background We aimed to explore the predictive value of the carotid plaque score, compared with the Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation 2 (SCORE2) risk prediction algorithm, on incident ischemic stroke and major adverse cardiovascular events and establish a prognostic cutoff of the carotid plaque score. Methods and Results In the prospective ACE 1950 (Akershus Cardiac Examination 1950 study), carotid plaque score was calculated with ultrasonography at inclusion in 2012 to 2015. The largest plaque diameter in each extracranial segment of the carotid artery on both sides was scored from 0 to 3 points.

A toddler with systemic contact dermatitis caused by diabetes devices.

Continuous glucose monitors (CGM) and insulin pumps have become the preferred treatment option for most young children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D), by avoiding fingerstick testing and providing real-time glucose measurements. These medical devices and their adhesives contain substances which have been identified as being responsible for allergic contact dermatitis. We describe the case of a toddler who developed severe contact dermatitis from her diabetes devices, leading to secondary infections and hospital admissions.

Effect of aerobic exercise and low-carbohydrate high-fat diet on glucose tolerance and android/gynoid fat in overweight/obese women: A randomized controlled trial.

Healthcare personnel self-assessed competence and knowledge following implementation of a new guideline on maternal resuscitation in Norway. A repeated measure study.

Introduction: Cardiac arrest in pregnancy is a rare, yet extremely challenging condition to manage for all healthcare personnel involved. Knowledge deficits and poor resuscitation skills can affect outcomes in cardiac arrest in pregnancy, but research exploring healthcare personnel competence and knowledge about maternal resuscitation is limited.

Aims: The aim of this study was to explore (1) healthcare personnel self-assessed competence and knowledge about cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in pregnancy as well as perimortem caesarean section, before and after implementation of a new guideline, (2) whether there were any interprofessional differences in knowledge about maternal resuscitation, and (3) potential differences between different implementation strategies.

Effect of a ketogenic diet on pain and quality of life in patients with lipedema: The LIPODIET pilot study.

Background: Lipedema is an underdiagnosed condition in women, characterized by a symmetrical increase in subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) in the lower extremities, sparing the trunk. The lipedema SAT has been found to be resistant to diet, exercise and bariatric surgery, in regard to both weight loss (WL) and symptom relief. Current experience indicates that a low carbohydrate and high fat (LCHF-diet) might have a beneficial effect on weight and symptom management in lipedema.

Cause-Specific Mortality in Patients During Long-Term Follow-Up After Atrial Switch for Transposition of the Great Arteries.

Background Little is known about the cause of death (CoD) in patients with transposition of the great arteries palliated with a Mustard or Senning procedure. The aim was to describe the CoD for patients with the Mustard and Senning procedure during short- (<10 years), mid- (10-20 years), and long-term (>20 years) follow-up after the operation. Methods and Results This is a retrospective, descriptive multicenter cohort study including all Nordic patients (Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden) who underwent a Mustard or Senning procedure between 1967 and 2003.

Pregnancy and Progression of Cardiomyopathy in Women With LMNA Genotype-Positive.

Background We aimed to assess the association between number of pregnancies and long-term progression of cardiac dysfunction, arrhythmias, and event-free survival in women with pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants of gene encoding for Lamin A/C proteins ( LMNA+). Methods and Results We retrospectively included consecutive women with LMNA+ and recorded pregnancy data. We collected echocardiographic data, occurrence of atrial fibrillation, atrioventricular block, sustained ventricular arrhythmias, and implantation of cardiac electronic devices (implantable cardioverter defibrillator/cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator).

Background: Randomized controlled trials on menopausal hormone therapy in humans have not confirmed the benefit of estrogens on cardiovascular disease found in animal studies. Flawed methodology or publication bias in animal studies may explain the dicrepancy.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate whether publication of the randomized controlled trials Heart and Estrogen/Progestin Replacement Study and Women's Health Initiative influenced study authors' assessment of research findings (confirmation bias) as well as to investigate publication bias and small-study effects in animal studies of estrogen effects on atherosclerosis.

Objective: Paediatric brain tumour (PBT) survivors face high risks of disabling long-term and late effects. Whether survivors' needs are met in a system with publicly funded services, but in the absence of a formal long-term follow-up model, is uncertain. Empirically based recommendations for a national model are needed.
