The effects of 3-year statin therapy and the achievement of LDL cholesterol target values in familial hypercholesterolemia patients: An experience from Serbia.

Background And Aims: Despite the use of statins, familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) patients often have increased LDL-cholesterol (Ch) and high risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). This study aimed to analyze the effect of statin therapy on attainment of LDL-Ch treatment targets and appearance of new ASCVD and diabetes in FH patients.

Methods: This study is a retrospective analysis of data from medical records of 302 FH patients treated continuously with statins during 3 years.

The relationship between dual practice, intention to work abroad and job satisfaction: A population-based study in the Serbian public healthcare sector.

Increasing dual practice and emigration of health workers threatens the effectiveness of the healthcare system. Insufficient information exists about these phenomena in the transitional countries of South-East Europe. Serbia, a European Union candidate, permits dual practice and there is a high intention to work abroad among its prospective healthcare professionals.

Long-term effects of immunosuppressive therapy on lung function in scleroderma patients.

The study aims to analyze the effects of induction treatment with cyclophosphamide (CYC) pulse therapy followed by maintenance treatment with other mild immunosuppressive agents on lung function in scleroderma (SSc) patients. Thirty patients with SSc (mean age 52 years, mean disease duration < 2 years) with forced vital capacity (FVC) ≤ 80% and/or diffusing capacity of carbon monoxide (DLco) ≤ 70% were included. Monthly CYC pulses were given for 6 months (induction treatment), followed by 3-monthly maintenance pulses for the next 18 months, and during the next 5 years patients received other mild immunosupressive therapy brought by the competent rheumatologist.

However, the building of a future health workforce that is responsive to diverse population needs and demographic and economic change remains insufficiently understood. There is a compelling argument to be made for a comprehensive research agenda to address the questions.

Background: Acute appendicitis (AA) is the most common surgical disease, and appendectomy is the treatment of choice in the majority of cases. A correct diagnosis is key for decreasing the negative appendectomy rate. The management can become difficult in case of complicated appendicitis.

Strengthening the public health workforce: An estimation of the long-term requirements for public health specialists in Serbia.

At the beginning of the 21st century, planning the public health workforce requirements came into the focus of policy makers. The need for improved provision of essential public health services, driven by a challenging non-communicable disease and causes of death and disability within Serbia, calls for a much needed estimation of the requirements of the public health professionals. Mid and long-term public health specialists' supply and demand estimations out to 2025were developed based on national staffing standards and regional distribution of the workforce in public health institutes of Serbia.

Endothelial dysfunction of coronary arteries in subjects without diabetes: An association with both insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion response.

Aims: This study was aimed to compare insulin sensitivity and secretion response, lipoprotein and plasminogen activator inhibitor 1 (PAI-1) levels between the subjects with and without coronary artery endothelial dysfunction (ED).

Methods: ED was detected by intracoronary injection of acetylcholine (ACh) in 47 nondiabetes subjects without stenotic coronary arteries, selected from 316 consecutive patients with coronary angiography performed for suspected coronary artery disease. The subjects were divided into two groups: presence of ACh-induced coronary spasm (group ED+, N = 30) and absence of ACh-induced coronary spasm (group ED-, N = 17).

Safety and immunogenicity of a seasonal trivalent inactivated split influenza vaccine: a phase I randomized clinical trial in healthy Serbian adults.

This study was a phase I double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity of a Serbian-produced seasonal trivalent split, inactivated influenza vaccine in healthy adults. The vaccine was manufactured in eggs by the Torlak Institute of Virology, Vaccines and Sera, Belgrade, Serbia and contained A/H1N1, A/H3N2 and B viruses. The clinical trial took place at the Clinical Center of Serbia in Belgrade.

Background: We assessed the effect of structured self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG), in combination with intensive education, on metabolic control, SMBG frequency, hospitalizations, cardiovascular risk factors, and quality-of-life parameters in patients with insulin-treated diabetes in primary health care settings in Serbia.

Methods: This 6-month, observational, noninterventional study, followed 346 insulin-treated diabetes patients (type 1 diabetes [T1D], n = 57; type 2 diabetes [T2D], n = 289) from 28 primary care centers. Patients attended a 10-day course at the specialized educational center and were followed monthly by their primary care physicians.

Background: Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is an autoimmune condition, which is associated with poor clinical outcomes including impaired quality of life and socio-economic status. Current evidence suggests that the incidence of GO in Europe may be declining, however data on the prevalence of this disease are sparse. Associations between racial discrimination, smoking during pregnancy and low birthweight among Roma.

Racial discrimination may increase the risk of low birthweight (LBW), but has not been studied among Roma, the largest minority population in Europe. Moreover, few studies test both institutional and interpersonal forms of racial discrimination on health. Our objective was to examine associations between institutional and interpersonal racial discrimination with LBW, and to test potential mediation by smoking during pregnancy.

Over-expression of V1A receptors in PVN modulates autonomic cardiovascular control.

The hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) is a key integrative site for the neuroendocrine control of the circulation and of the stress response. It is also a major source of the neuropeptide hormone vasopressin (VP), and co-expresses V1a receptors (V1aR). We thus sought to investigate the role of V1aR in PVN in cardiovascular control in response to stress.

Evaluation of neuroendocrine tumors with 99mTc-EDDA/HYNIC TOC.

Background: This paper is the short review of our preliminary results obtained with 99mTc-EDDA/HYNIC-TOC.

Material And Methods: The total of 495 patients with different neuroendocrine tumors were investigated during last few years.

Results: There have been 334 true positive (TP), 73 true negative (TN), 6 false positive (FP) and 82 false negative findings (FN).

Evolution of Surface Motor Activation Zones in Hemiplegic Patients During 20 Sessions of FES Therapy with Multi-pad Electrodes.

The purpose of this study was to examine surface motor activation zones for wrist, fingers and thumb extension movements and their temporal change during 20 therapy sessions using advanced multi-pad functional electrical stimulation system. Results from four hemiplegic patients indicate that certain zones have higher probability of eliciting each of the target movements. However, mutual overlap and variations of the zones are present not just between the subjects, but also on the intrasubject level, reflected through these session to session transformations of the selected virtual electrodes.

Age-related reduction of chromatin fractal dimension in toluidine blue - stained hepatocytes.

In this study, we proposed a hypothesis that chromatin of mouse hepatocytes exhibits age-related reduction of fractal dimension. This hypothesis was based on previously published works demonstrating that complexity of biological systems such as tissues, decreases during the process of physiological aging. Liver tissue was obtained from 24 male mice divided into 3 age groups: 10-days-old (young, juvenile), 210-days-old (adult) and 390-days-old.

Acute and Late Genitourinary Toxicity after 72 Gy of Conventionally Fractionated Conformal Radiotherapy for Localised Prostate Cancer: Impact of Individual and Clinical Parameters.

Aim: Our aim was to estimate the incidence of acute and late genitourinary toxicity in patients treated with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCRT) for localised prostate cancer and to estimate the possible influence of individual and clinical characteristics.

Materials And Methods: Between September 2009 and September 2013, 225 patients with localised prostate cancer were treated with 3DCRT. Ninety-four patients with an estimated risk of lymph node involvement ≤15%, according to the Roach formula, were evaluated in this study.

Background: The global burden of mental disorders is rising. In Serbia, anxiety is the leading cause of disability-adjusted life years. Serbia has no mental health survey at the population level.

Prognostic value of lymphocyte/monocyte ratio in advanced Hodgkin lymphoma: correlation with International Prognostic Score and tumor associated macrophages.

We studied the prognostic significance of the absolute lymphocyte/monocyte count ratio (ALC/AMC), its contribution to the prognostic value of the International Prognostic Score (IPS), and evaluated if ALC/AMC could serve as a proxy for the frequency of CD68 + tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in 101 patients with advanced Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve identified best cut-off values of 2.0 for ALC/AMC and 25% for CD68 + TAM.

Mathematical modeling of the neuron morphology using two dimensional images.

In this study mathematical analyses such as the analysis of area and length, fractal analysis and modified Sholl analysis were applied on two dimensional (2D) images of neurons from adult human dentate nucleus (DN). Using mathematical analyses main morphological properties were obtained including the size of neuron and soma, the length of all dendrites, the density of dendritic arborization, the position of the maximum density and the irregularity of dendrites. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used for modeling the size of neurons and the length of all dendrites.

Mapping the governance of human resources for health in Serbia.

This article maps the current governance of human resources for health (HRH) in relation to universal health coverage in Serbia since the health sector reforms in 2003. The study adapts the Global Health Workforce Alliance/World Health Organization four-dimensional framework of HRH in the context of governance for universal health coverage. A set of proxies was established for the availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality of HRH.
