Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the "obesity paradox" in COPD patients, focusing on how body mass index (BMI) relates to mortality rates.
  • A systematic review of 120 studies showed that while being underweight increases mortality risk, being overweight or obese is associated with lower mortality risk, establishing a U-shaped relationship with BMI.
  • The research highlights specific BMI inflection points where the protective benefits begin to decline, indicating that extremely high BMI values can negate these benefits in relation to various types of mortality.

  • Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a serious condition often seen in chemotherapy patients, with a notable mortality rate of 12.5%, making accurate risk assessment vital for effective treatment.
  • This study, conducted at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital from 2015 to 2019, aimed to compare the effectiveness of two scoring systems—CISNE and MASCC—in predicting complications during hospitalization for FN patients.
  • The results indicated that CISNE score outperformed MASCC in both solid and hematologic cancers, with significant differences in predictive accuracy, particularly highlighting CISNE's superior ability to forecast in-hospital complications.

Early identification of clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) is crucial in cirrhosis, as it is the primary underlying mechanism of cirrhosis complications. One such complication is esophageal varices, which are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) measurements and endoscopy, considered the gold standard for these conditions, are invasive methods that are limited, costly, and inconvenient.

Antimicrobial Resistance Issue: A Matter of Practice and Capacity to Conduct an Audit.

Acta Med Indones

April 2024

Division of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Department of Internal Medicine, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia - Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta, Indonesia.

The World Health Organization released the practical toolkit for antimicrobial stewardship in health-care facilities in low- and middle-income countries in 2019 due to increasing rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) causing the diminishing of treatment options and that the available antibiotics seem to no longer work. The introduction of this toolkit indicates the need to be more down-to-earth in combating the problems of antimicrobial resistance. This situation happened because we have taken antibiotics for granted for too long with less awareness, which results in the potential loss of its use and benefits.
