A 24-year-old female nurse with a 4-month history of low back pain (LBP) was treated with acupuncture because of difficulty to her working. At the first presentation, the numerical rating scale (NRS) value was 7. After 2 weeks, the NRS value improved to 2-3, and she could bend over better, including when working night shifts.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of swim-up and density gradient centrifugation methods on sperm DNA fragmentation.

Methods: Nineteen normozoospermic patient samples with ≥100 × 10 motile sperms were included in this study. Sperm DNA fragmentation, progressive motility, and progressive motile sperm number were measured before and after the swim-up method or density gradient centrifugation.

Article Synopsis
  • The Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology provided data on assisted reproductive technology (ART) cycles for 2019, showing a trend of decreased fresh cycles and increased frozen-thawed embryo transfers.
  • In total, there were over 458,000 treatment cycles and nearly 61,000 neonates, indicating growth from the previous year.
  • The average maternal age was 37.9 years, and single embryo transfers were predominant, boasting a high live birth rate of 97.3%.

Background: Randomized trials in Western countries have provided evidence that prophylactic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy reduces mortality in heart failure (HF) patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction. However, the risk of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias in Japanese HF patients sharing similar risk factors is still unknown.

Methods: The Heart Failure Indication and Sudden Cardiac Death Prevention Trial Japan trial (NCT03185832) is a prospective, multicenter registry designed to collect data on ventricular arrhythmia, HF events, and mortality in Japanese HF patients.

Background Arterial stiffness is an important predictor of cardiovascular events; however, indexes for measuring arterial stiffness have not been widely incorporated into routine clinical practice. This study aimed to determine whether the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), based on the blood pressure-independent stiffness parameter β and reflecting arterial stiffness from the origin of the ascending aorta, is a good predictor of cardiovascular events in patients with cardiovascular disease risk factors in a large prospective cohort. Methods and Results This multicenter prospective cohort study, commencing in May 2013, with a 5-year follow-up period, included patients (aged 40‒74 years) with cardiovascular disease risks.

Background: Reproductive medicine deals with fertility and is closely related to heredity. In reproductive medicine, it is necessary to provide genetic information for the patients prior to assisted reproductive technology (ART). Japan Society for Reproductive Medicine (JSRM) requires doctors involved in reproductive medicine to have standard knowledge of reproductive genetics and knowledge of reproductive medicine, which is covered in their publication, "required knowledge of reproductive medicine.

RBBB, a pattern seen on the 12-lead ECG, results when normal electrical activity in the His-Purkinje system is interrupted for some reason. The normal sequence of activation is altered in RBBB, with a resultant characteristic appearance on the ECG manifest by a widened QRS complex and changes in the directional vectors of the R and S waves. This ECG pattern is often seen in clinical practice and generally regarded as benign.

Background: The phase III Japanese Rivaroxaban Once-Daily Oral Direct Factor Xa Inhibition Compared with Vitamin K Antagonism for Prevention of Stroke and Embolism Trial in Atrial Fibrillation (J-ROCKET AF) showed that the rivaroxaban group had a lower event rate of intracranial bleeding than the warfarin group and that rivaroxaban was noninferior to warfarin for the principal safety outcome. However, safety and effectiveness data from unselected patients with AF in everyday clinical practice in Japan are lacking.

Methods: The Xarelto Post-Authorization Safety & Effectiveness Study in Japanese Patients with Atrial Fibrillation (XAPASS) is a real-world, prospective, single-arm, observational study mandated by the Japanese authority as postmarketing surveillance.

Mucous membrane pemphigoid is an autoantibody-mediated disease predominantly affecting the oral cavity, pharynx, and conjunctiva. Conjunctival lesions may lead to impaired vision and, finally, blindness. About 25% of mucous membrane pemphigoid patients generate autoantibodies against the α3 chain of laminin 332 (LAMα3), a structural protein of epidermal/epithelial basement membranes.

A 69-year-old woman presented with generalized myasthenia gravis and a left orbital cavernous hemangioma (OCH), which elevated the optic nerve and displaced the external eye muscles. Cyclosporine treatment induced a gradual size reduction in the OCH, and consequently contributed to improved external ocular symptoms in combination with immunosuppressant effects.
