Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of obesity on postoperative complications in ulcerative colitis patients undergoing a specific surgery (IPAA).
  • Results showed no significant difference in overall complication rates between obese and non-obese patients, though obese patients had slightly longer hospital stays.
  • The findings highlight low certainty of evidence, suggesting further research is needed to draw definitive conclusions.

Calmodulin (CaM), the key calcium sensor of eukaryotic cells regulating a great number of target proteins, belongs to the most conserved proteins. We compared function and properties of CaMs from two evolutionarily distant species, the human () representing vertebrates, and the malaria parasite (Pf). The biophysical characterization revealed higher stability of Pf CaM attributed to the more stable C-terminal domain in both Ca free and saturated states.

Due to the binding to a number of proteins to the receptor protomers in receptor heteromers in the brain, the term "heteroreceptor complexes" was introduced. A number of serotonin 5-HT1A heteroreceptor complexes were recently found to be linked to the ascending 5-HT pathways known to have a significant role in depression. The 5-HT1A⁻FGFR1 heteroreceptor complexes were involved in synergistically enhancing neuroplasticity in the hippocampus and in the dorsal raphe 5-HT nerve cells.

Endotoxin-induced TNF-alpha production changes inversely to its plasma level during pregnancy.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

June 2004

1st Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Faculty of Medicine Semmelweis University, Baross utca 27, Budapest, H-1088, Hungary.

Objective: To study plasma TNF-alpha levels during normal pregnancy and the ex vivo endotoxin-induced TNF-alpha production of peripheral blood cells.

Study Design: In a longitudinal prospective study the ex vivo endotoxin-induced TNF-alpha production of peripheral blood cells and the plasma level of TNF-alpha in 18 women with uncomplicated pregnancies were determined at the 8th, 17th, 27th and 36th weeks of their pregnancy and 48 h and 6 weeks post-delivery. TNF-alpha levels were determined by ELISA technique.

Pancreatic cancer - a continuing challenge in oncology.

Pathol Oncol Res

September 2004

1st Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research, Faculty of Medicine Semmelweis University, H-1085 Budapest, Hungary.

Pancreatic cancer is still one of the major health problems because of its rising incidence and the modest therapeutic results. The paper surveys the statistical data, the risk factors, the preneoplastic ductal lesions, the hormonal sensitivity, the possible transdifferentiation in the endocrine and exocrine parts and the possibilities for chemoprevention. Hungary is peculiar among the European countries because during the last 50 years the incidence of pancreatic cancer has displayed a 15-fold increase.

Physiological role of a novel neuropeptide, apelin, and its receptor in the rat brain.

Apelin, a peptide recently isolated from bovine stomach tissue extracts, has been identified as the endogenous ligand of the human orphan APJ receptor. We established a stable Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell line expressing a gene encoding the rat apelin receptor fused to the enhanced green fluorescent protein, to investigate internalization and the pharmacological profile of the apelin receptor. Stimulation of this receptor by the apelin fragments K17F (Lys1-Phe-Arg-Arg-Gln-Arg-Pro-Arg-Leu-Ser-His-Lys-Gly-Pro-Met-Pro-Phe17) and pE13F (pGlu5-Arg-Pro-Arg-Leu-Ser-His-Lys-Gly-Pro-Met-Pro-Phe17) resulted in a dose-dependent inhibition of forskolin-induced cAMP production and promoted its internalization.
