  • Recent studies have explored the link between human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) and human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) in the development of pityriasis rosea (PR), yielding inconsistent findings due to varying sample types and techniques used.
  • In this study, researchers tested tissue and plasma samples from 25 PR patients for HHV-6 and HHV-7 using advanced molecular and serological methods, finding a significant prevalence of HHV-6 and HHV-7 in the samples.
  • The results suggest that both HHV-6 and HHV-7 may play a role in PR, recommending the simultaneous collection of diverse biological samples and the use of quantitative real-time PCR for clearer

microRNAs (miRNAs) play a significant role in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease. In this study, we evaluated the neuroprotective effect of thymoquinone on the expression profiles of miRNA and cognitive functions in the 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced Parkinson's model. Male adult Wistar albino rats (200-230 g, n  = 36) were randomly assigned to six groups: Sham, thymoquinone (10 mg/kg, p.

  • The study evaluated the impact of two types of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on managing postoperative pain in patients who had hip fracture surgery.
  • Patients were divided into three groups: one receiving standard patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), another receiving lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve TENS alongside PCA, and a third group receiving surgical wound TENS with PCA.
  • Results showed that patients receiving surgical wound TENS experienced significantly lower pain levels (VAS scores) and consumed fewer opioid analgesics compared to the control group, suggesting TENS can effectively reduce postoperative pain.

  • Non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA) is a prevalent and complex issue with varied treatment options and no definitive guidelines, leading to differing management practices internationally.
  • A comprehensive survey with 336 responses from specialists in 49 countries explored current medical and surgical strategies for NOA, analyzing results against existing guidelines and offering expert recommendations.
  • Key findings included diverse approaches to hormonal therapy, significant variation in sperm retrieval success rates, and differing protocols around varicocele repair and follicle-stimulating hormone cutoff levels for sperm retrieval.

Readily Accessible and Brightly Fluorogenic BODIPY/NBD-Tetrazines via SAr Reactions.

J Org Chem

May 2024

Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Mustafa Kemal University, 31060 Hatay, Türkiye.

We describe SAr reactions of some commercial amino-tetrazines and halo-dyes, which give efficiently quenched BODIPY/NBD-tetrazines ( < 0.01) in high yields and, importantly, with high purities affordable via simple silica gel chromatography only. The dyes exhibit large Stokes shifts, moderate environmental sensitivity, and emission enhancements (up to 193-fold) upon Tz ligation with BCN─a strained dienophile.

Background: Coronary collateral circulation (CCC) can effectively improve myocardial blood supply to the area of CTO (chronic total coronary occlusion) and can, thus, improve the prognosis of patients with stable coronary syndrome (SCS). The degree of inflammation and some inflammation markers were associated with the development of collaterals.

Objective: To investigate whether prognostic nutritional index (PNI) has an association with the development of CCC in patients with SCS.

Validation of the Clavien-Madadi Classification for Unexpected Events in Pediatric Surgery: A Collaborative ERNICA Project.

J Pediatr Surg

September 2024

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Hannover Medical School, Hannover, Germany; European Reference Network for Rare Inherited and Congenital Anomalies (ERNICA), European Union, Netherlands.

Background: The Clavien-Madadi classification is a novel instrument for the assessment and grading of unexpected events in pediatric surgery, based on the Clavien-Dindo classification. The system has been adjusted to better fit the pediatric population in a prospective single-center study. There is a need now to validate the Clavien-Madadi classification within an international expert network.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study aimed to identify factors affecting disease-free survival (DFS) in patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), as previous research in this area has been limited.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 257 patients, finding that 51% had persistent/recurrent disease while 49% had no evidence of disease at follow-up, with various factors like age, metastasis, and initial response influencing DFS outcomes.
  • - The key finding was that the lack of an excellent response after initial treatment is the strongest predictor of worse DFS, highlighting the need for diligent follow-up even in patients who initially respond well.

  • Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) often recurs after treatment, particularly in those with residual disease post-chemotherapy, and capecitabine is commonly used as a follow-up treatment for these patients.! -
  • A study analyzed 170 TNBC patients who received capecitabine after neoadjuvant chemotherapy, finding a 30% recurrence rate and 18% death rate, with a 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) of 66% and overall survival (OS) of 74% in the cohort.! -
  • Results indicated that while capecitabine's effectiveness was lower than past studies, certain patients, especially those with specific residual disease characteristics, could still benefit from it,

  • - The study investigated the occurrence of spondyloarthritis (SpA) features in 350 patients with Takayasu arteritis (TAK), finding that 8.8% had additional SpA-related conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or psoriasis.
  • - Patients with both TAK and SpA displayed earlier onset of disease symptoms and required more aggressive biological treatments for active vasculitis compared to those with TAK alone.
  • - The research highlighted the overlap between TAK and SpA, suggesting a potential link in their pathogenesis, possibly related to an MHC class I allele similar to that seen in spondyloarthritis.

Objective: Cisplatin-associated acute kidney injury is a common clinical event that causes increased morbidity and mortality in cancer patients even if they are categorized as having normal functioning kidneys. We aimed to determine predictive factors that can predict acute kidney injury associated with cisplatin therapy in patients with normal renal function by comparison of pre-chemotherapy estimated glomerular filtration rates calculated separately by Cockcroft and Gault (CG), the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD), and the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPİ) equations and accompanying patient-associated factors.

Materials And Methods: A total of 200 patients diagnosed with lung cancer and determined to have normal functioning kidneys and considered cisplatin eligible by the attending physician before chemotherapy were included in this retrospective study.
