Establishment of recurrent exposures reference levels for repeated computed tomography examinations in adult patients on a nationwide level in Slovakia.

Introduction: The study aims were: (1) to assess the incidence in 1 year, the cumulative incidences and the period prevalence in 3/5 years of the condition of patients accruing cumulative effective dose (CED) ≥ 100 mSv in health care centres providing CT examinations in Slovakia; and (2) to quantify their variability among different centres, to test the feasibility of establishing recurrent exposure reference levels (RERL) on a nationwide level.

Materials And Methods: The data were tracked during five consecutive years using the CT dose index and dose-length-product along with the patient's ID. ED was calculated using conversion factors.

In-person psychoeducational intervention to reduce rehospitalizations and improve the clinical course of major depressive disorder: a non-randomized pilot study.

Background: Emerging issues in the management of major depressive disorder (MDD) comprise a nonadherence to treatment and treatment failures, depressive recurrence and relapses, misidentification of incoming exacerbated phases and consequently, a chronification of depression. While antidepressant drugs constitute the standard of care for MDD, effective psychosocial interventions are needed to reduce rehospitalizations and other adverse events. The present study primarily investigated the effects and impact of implementing a structured psychoeducational intervention on the clinical course of MDD.

Bridging the mood and stress hormone levels between mothers and their babies: The study design and first preliminary results.

The neurobiological mechanisms involved in the influence of post-partum maternal mood fluctuations on child development are far from being understood. Here we present the design of an ongoing study aimed to test the hypothesis that the mental state of the mother has an impact on her neonate which is manifested by similarities in the neuroendocrine function of the mother and the child. The hypothesis is being tested under both stress and non-stress conditions in mothers and babies aged 3-4 days and 7-9 months.

Cauda equina neuroendocrine tumors show biological features distinct from other paragangliomas and visceral neuroendocrine tumors.

Cauda equina neuroendocrine tumors (CENETs) are neoplasms of uncertain histogenesis with overlapping features between those of paragangliomas (PGs) and visceral neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). We have explored their biological relationship to both subsets of neuroendocrine neoplasms. The clinical and radiological features of a cohort of 23 CENETs were analyzed.

Mental health of the Slovak population during COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional survey.

Background: Population's mental health surveillance is essential for knowing the distribution of mental well-being and mental disorders in the society. This allows for the establishment, evaluation, and revision of preventive measures and curative services. The results of such monitoring should serve as a database for evidence-based mental health policy.

Preliminary Assessment of Pre-Electroconvulsive Therapy Evaluation Practices in European Countries: The Need for Guidelines.

Objectives: Pre-electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) evaluation is an essential part of ECT preparation, a standard treatment in the psychiatric field. However, no routine pre-ECT evaluation has been published so far. This preliminary study aimed to explore different practices in pre-ECT evaluation across European countries.

Hemorrhagic Epidermoid Cyst in Cerebellar Vermis: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Intracranial epidermoid cysts are slow growing congenital avascular neoplasms that spread across the basal surface of the brain. They most commonly occur in the paramedial region in the cerebellopontine angle and the parasellar region. Despite its generally benign nature, sporadically they can be accompanied with hemorrhage or very rarely undergo malignant transformation.

Cold Exposure Distinctively Modulates Parathyroid and Thyroid Hormones in Cold-Acclimatized and Non-Acclimatized Humans.

Cold-induced activation of thermogenesis modulates energy metabolism, but the role of humoral mediators is not completely understood. We aimed to investigate the role of parathyroid and thyroid hormones in acute and adaptive response to cold in humans. Examinations were performed before/after 15 minutes of ice-water swimming (n = 15) or 120 to 150 minutes of cold-induced nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) applied to cold-acclimatized (n = 6) or non-acclimatized (n = 11) individuals.
