Acquired colonic stenosis is extremely rare in infants and surgical resection is the mainstay of treatment. Endoscopic balloon dilation has shown success in treating bowel stenosis from inflammatory bowel disease but its application in infants with colonic strictures of other origin has not been widely explored. We report a 4-week-old male infant who developed significant abdominal distension due to progressive colonic stenosis, occurring 2 weeks following balloon valvuloplasty for his severe valvular pulmonary stenosis.

Introduction: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) become the recommended treatment over vitamin K antagonists (VKA) in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF). However, their effectiveness in reducing cognitive impairment and dementia compared to VKA remains unclear.
Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted on Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Database.
Background: Stroke and traumatic intracranial hemorrhage (tICH) are major causes of disability worldwide, with stroke exerting significant negative effects on the brain, potentially elevating tICH risk. In this study, we investigated tICH risk in stroke survivors.
Methods And Results: Using relevant data (2017-2019) from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, we conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study.
Background: Sex disparities exist in cardiometabolic diseases. Metabolomic profiling offers insight into disease mechanisms, as the metabolome is influenced by environmental and genetic factors. We identified metabolites associated with sex and determined if sex-associated metabolites are associated with incident stoke, incident coronary heart disease, prevalent hypertension, and prevalent chronic kidney disease.

Alveolar capillary dysplasia with misalignment of the pulmonary veins (ACDMPV) is a rare congenital diffuse lung disorder, with a fatal course during the neonatal period. We describe an 18-month-old boy who presented with respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia and pulmonary hypertensive crisis requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Exome sequencing revealed a frameshift variant, NM_001451.

Background And Aims: Calculating the precise total burn surface area is crucial when treating burn patients, particularly children. The Lund and Browder chart and Rule of Nines, 2-dimensional diagrams that are widely used, are subject to high interrater variance, and they can severely overestimate the burn area. Previously, the adult 3-dimensional burn area calculation mobile application was developed.

Cytokine release syndrome (CRS) is known to be associated with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Multiple anti-inflammatory therapies such as tocilizumab, corticosteroids, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), and haemoadsorption or haemoperfusion have been used to combat this life-threatening condition. However, immunocompromised hosts are often omitted from research studies, and knowledge on the clinical efficacy of these therapies in immunocompromised patients is therefore limited.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground Non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOACs) have better pharmacologic properties than warfarin and are recommended in preference to warfarin in most patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Besides lower bleeding complications, other advantages of NOACs over warfarin particularly renal outcomes remain inconclusive. Methods and Results Electronic searches were conducted through Medline, Scopus, Cochrane Library databases, and ClinicalTrial.

MSCs gain a lot of attention for cell-based therapy due to their characteristics including differentiation ability and immunomodulatory effect. Preclinical and clinical studies demonstrated that MSCs can be applied to treat female infertility by improving of the functions of ovary and uterus.

Background/aim: The global problems of chronic liver disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are increasing. We examined the prevalence of NAFLD and significant liver stiffness in an asymptomatic population and identified the predictors of significant fibrosis in NAFLD.
Method: We prospectively enrolled Thai subjects, aged 18-80 years, from four regions (Bangkok, Central, North, South) of Thailand from March 2013 to November 2016.
Background And Aim: Fibrotic stage (FS) assessment is essential in chronic hepatitis C treatment cascade. Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) using transient elastography (TE) is reliable and correlated with liver biopsy. However, TE may not be widely available.

Carotid body paraganglioma is commonly asymptomatic, slow-growing, and nonfunctioning. With its relative contraindication to biopsy due to its high vascularity in nature, imaging characteristics are the key to help making the diagnosis. Treatment modalities, ranging from an observation to definitive treatment with surgery, should be selected on an individual basis.
