A novel experimental system was used to investigate the localized effects of microwave radiation on bovine eye lenses in culture for over 2 weeks. Using this setup, we found clear evidence that this radiation has a significant impact on the eye lens. At the macroscopic level, it is demonstrated that exposure to a few mW at 1 GHz for over 36 h affects the optical function of the lens.

One of the most significant advances of the last decade has been the development of platelet glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa receptor inhibitors. A large series of randomised, controlled clinical trials of these agents have shown a significant reduction in ischaemic events, not only in acute coronary syndrome patients, but also in patients who undergo elective percutaneous coronary interventions. Even though the use of oral antiplatelet and antithrombotic therapies in addition to percutaneous coronary interventions have had a significant impact in clinical outcomes after acute coronary syndromes, the use of GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors provide additional protection against recurrent ischaemia and has been identified as the pivotal mediator of platelet aggregation, making it a logical target for the control of platelet response to vascular injury.

The p21-activated protein kinases (PAKs) are activated through direct interaction with the GTPases Rac and Cdc42Hs, which are implicated in the control of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAP kinase) c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and the reorganization of the actin cytoskeleton [1-3]. Age and gender influence on lead accumulation in root dentine of human permanent teeth.

143 permanent teeth of individuals aged 14-60 yr from a non-occupationally exposed population in northern Israel were analysed for lead accumulation in a atomic absorption spectrophotometer graphite-furnace. A significant correlation was established between lead level and age. No gender correlation was found.

The zone of progenitor cells of mandibular condyles of neonatal mice was kept in an organ culture system for up to 8 days. Qualitative and quantitative determinations indicated a pronounced proliferative activity during the initial phases of the culture followed by a differentiation phase and the acquisition of typical hyaline cartilage. The mature hypertrophic chondrocytes were found to be surrounded by cartilage-specific macromolecules such as type II collagen, cartilage proteoglycans, and cartilage anchorin.
