The worldwide incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) is roughly two million new instances each year throughout the world, according to the World Health Organization 2022. CRC is the third most prevalent disease and the second most common cancer in terms of fatality. People diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the early stages have a five-year survival rate of roughly 95%, but people identified with the disease in the later stages have a survival rate of approximately 12%.

Background: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder in which genetically susceptible individuals cannot digest gluten (wheat) and its homologs such as Scalin (rye) and Hordein (barley).

Aim: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the measures of associations between CD and psychiatric disorders, specifically anxiety and depression, and explore the relationship between adherence to a Gluten-Free Diet (GFD) and the psychiatric aspects of the disease.

Methods: We searched PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science for articles investigating anxiety and depression in CD patients.

Introduction: Four-corner fusion has long been the preferred treatment for stages II and III of scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse with intact radiolunate articulation. Three corner fusions were then proposed as a more limited procedure with improved ulnar deviation through triquetrum excision. However, we believe triquetrum preservation would decrease the radiolunate contact pressure without affecting the ulnar deviation range.

Objective: To evaluate curve correctability, complications, and rate of growth following treatment.

Background: Distraction-founded techniques such as traditionally growing rods or magnetically controlled growing rods are the almost globally accepted management patterns for early onset scoliosis. However, periodic lengthening operations are still needed.

Background: Head and neck sarcomas are very rare accounting for about 1% of head and neck malignancies and 5% of sarcomas. Outcomes have historically been worse in this group compared to other sarcomas, due to anatomical constraints that make complete surgical removal difficult and increased local relapse rate. Surgery remains the main intervention although the data suggest the role of chemotherapy and irradiation as treatment options.

Early detection of myocardial iron overload in patients with β-thalassemia major using cardiac magnetic resonance T1 mapping.

Magn Reson Imaging

December 2024

Pediatric Hematology Oncology and BMT Department, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt; Faculty of Medicine Ain Shams University Research Institute-Clinical Research Center (MASRI-CRC), Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The T2* technique for measuring myocardial iron content has limitations in detecting early myocardial iron overload, prompting researchers to explore T1 mapping as a more effective alternative.
  • A study involving 32 β-thalassemia major patients showed that T1 mapping could differentiate between patients and healthy controls, identifying cases of high myocardial iron content that T2* missed.
  • Incorporating T1 mapping into the evaluation process enhances the detection of myocardial iron overload, potentially improving treatment strategies and reducing heart-related complications in patients.

Background: Mpox infection is a zoonotic illness that resembles smallpox. Vaccination is widely regarded as a vital effective method of preventing mpox, however, there is lack of consensus of effectiveness of a single dose of mpox vaccine in the current 2022-2023 outbreak. We pooled data from real-world studies to evaluate the efficacy of the JYNNEOS vaccination given as a single dosage.

Methods: In total, 170 chronic HBV patients and 50 healthy controls of comparable age and gender were included in this case-control study. Clinical, laboratory, and imaging evaluations were conducted. ELISA was used to determine serum IL-6 levels, and TLR2 (rs3804099) genotyping allelic discrimination assay was performed using real-time PCR.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third prime cause of malignancy-related mortality worldwide. Early and accurate identification of HCC is crucial for good prognosis, efficacy of therapy, and survival rates of the patients. We aimed to develop a machine-learning model incorporating differentially expressed RNA signatures with laboratory parameters to construct an RNA signature-based diagnostic model for HCC.

Background: Our objective was to identify non-malignant factors that contribute to mortality in children, adolescents and young adults, aiming to improve patient follow-up and reduce mortality rates to achieve better survival outcomes.

Methods: We analyzed 8,239 acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cases diagnosed between 2000 and 2019 in the USA. Using version 8.

Article Synopsis
  • The left atrial appendage (LAA) is a major source of blood clots in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), with LAA pseudothrombus (LAAPT) occurring in about 28% of patients.
  • A study of 213 NVAF patients showed that LAAPT was linked to larger LAA size and lower tortuosity, and it was significantly associated with a higher risk of stroke.
  • LAAPT's presence on cardiovascular CT scans could provide additional information for assessing stroke risk beyond the CHADS-VASc scoring system.

Introduction: Despite extensive studies of the impact of COVID-19 on patients with cancer, there is a dearth of information from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Our study aimed to report pertinent MENA COVID-19 and Cancer Registry (MCCR) findings on patient management and outcomes.

Methods: MCCR was adapted from the American Society of Clinical Oncology COVID-19 Registry to collect data specifically from patients with cancer and SARS-CoV-2 infection from 12 centers in eight countries including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Egypt, Algeria, United Arab Emirates, and Morocco.

Approximately two-thirds of the Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) cases are preceded by upper respiratory tract infection or enteritis. There has been previous documentation of a clear association between Covid-19 and GBS. Covid-19 can affect the nervous tissue either through direct damage or through triggering a host immune response with subsequent development of autoimmune diseases such as GBS.
