Iron regulatory protein 2 (IRP2), a post-transcriptional regulator of cellular iron metabolism has been associated with susceptibility to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Resistive breathing (RB) is the hallmark of the pathophysiology of obstructive airway diseases, especially during exacerbations, where increased mechanical stress is imposed on the lung. We have previously shown that RB, through tracheal banding, mimicking severe airway obstruction, induces pulmonary inflammation and injury in previously healthy mice.

Skeletal muscles contain lipids inside and outside cells, namely intramyocellular lipids (IMCL) and extramyocellular lipids (EMCL), respectively; lipids have also been found to be interspersed between these muscles as adipose tissue, namely intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT). Metabolized IMCL has been recognized as an important substrate for energy production and their metabolism is determined by the muscle oxidative capacity. Therefore, it has been speculated that muscle oxidative capacity is related to muscle lipid content.

We quantified the fraction of cardiovascular deaths attributable to smoking in Germany over time, accounting for population ageing. We calculated population-attributable fractions to quantify cardiovascular deaths attributable to smoking for 1992 to 2021, and compared actual with age-standardized figures. We found a significant decline in the number of cardiovascular deaths attributable to smoking: from about 71 900 cases in 1992 to around 42 000 cases in 2021, with a steeper decline in men.

Recent global popularity of social media content about dissociative identity disorder (DID) has coincided with increased self-diagnosis among children and young people who have formed large online communities and presented in clinical settings seeking to affirm their self-diagnoses. We situate this phenomenon within a broader trend toward self-diagnosis due to the widespread visibility and accessibility of mental health content on social media. Social media propelled self-diagnosis raises particular questions for the study and treatment of DID due to long-standing debates over whether the condition is traumagenic, sociogenic, or iatrogenic.

Polyphenols, natural compounds abundant in phenolic structures, have received widespread attention due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and anticancer properties, making them valuable for biomedical applications. However, the green synthesis of polyphenol-based materials with economical and environmentally friendly strategies is of great significance. In this study, a multifunctional wound dressing was achieved by introducing polyphenol-based materials of copper phosphate-tannic acid with a flower-like structure (Cu-TA NFs), which show the reactive oxygen species scavenging performance.

Circulating proteins may be promising biomarkers or drug targets. Leveraging genome-wide association studies of type 1 diabetes (18,942 cases and 501,638 controls of European ancestry) and circulating protein abundances (10,708 European ancestry individuals), Mendelian randomization analyses were conducted to assess the associations between circulating abundances of 1,560 candidate proteins and the risk of type 1 diabetes, followed by multiple sensitivity and colocalization analyses, horizontal pleiotropy examinations, and replications. Bulk tissue and single-cell gene expression enrichment analyses were performed to explore candidate tissues and cell types for prioritized proteins.
