Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is an inheritable skeletal disorder characterized by bone fragility often caused by pathogenic variants in the COL1A1 gene. Current OI mouse models with a glycine substitution in Col1a1 exhibit excessive severity, thereby limiting long-term pathophysiological analysis and drug effect assessments. To address this limitation, we constructed a novel OI mouse model mimicking a patient with OI type III.

Despite welfare state expansion in liberal democracies during the 20th century, health inequalities between socio-economic groups persist. Understanding individuals' lived experiences can inform policy for reducing unequal health outcomes in these lives. We build on Fundamental Cause Theory (FCT), which posits that low socio-economic status is the fundamental cause of health problems in (later) life.

Moral distress occurs when professionals are constrained from taking what they believe to be ethically appropriate actions or are forced to take actions they believe are ethically inappropriate, challenging their professional identities and representing systems-level issues within organizations. Moral distress has been recognized in a variety of health care-related fields; however, the phenomenon is still comparatively unexplored among clinical research professionals (CRPs). In this qualitative study, we interviewed ten CRPs to unearth root causes of moral distress in this ethically unique profession.

In our previous study, we identified a Short Interspersed Nuclear Element Retrotransposon Insertion Polymorphism (SINE-RIP) within the 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) of the Phospholipase A2 Group XVI (PLA2G16) gene, which is essential in lipid metabolism. In this study, we confirmed the presence of this 280 bp SINE insertion and examined its distribution across ten distinct pig breeds using PCR and sequencing. Subsequently, RT-PCR was employed to determine its potential for co-transcription.

Biol Trace Elem Res

January 2025

Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Marine Sciences and Fisheries, University of Chittagong, Chittagong, 4331, Bangladesh.

The Southeastern part of the Bay of Bengal is increasingly threatened by heavy metal pollution, posing significant risks to both aquatic life and human health. In this context, the contamination levels of six heavy metals-Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), and Iron (Fe)-were assessed in the soft tissues of Green mussels (Perna viridis) from five key sites: Matamuhuri, Moheshkhali, Bakhkhali, Naf, and St. Martin.

The mediating role of self-efficacy in the relationship between health literacy, health status and psychological well-being among German trainees and students in nursing.

Front Public Health

January 2025

Competence Center for Epidemiology and Health Services Research for Healthcare Professionals (CVcare), Institute for Health Services Research in Dermatology and Nursing (IVDP), University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Hamburg, Germany.

Introduction: Health literacy is considered a determinant of several health-related behaviors and outcomes. Health literacy can be seen as a particularly relevant resource for health maintenance and promotion for young adults at the beginning of their challenging vocational training in nursing. However, the underlying mechanisms and the roles of other influencing factors such as self-efficacy remain unclear and need to be understood to successfully tailor interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • In Indian states, many public health programs are led by clinicians lacking formal leadership training, prompting Uttar Pradesh to launch a Public Health Management and Leadership program for mid-career medical officers to enhance their administrative skills.
  • The training included essential skills such as leadership, communication, and problem-solving through in-person sessions and hands-on projects, with participant feedback measured via Kirkpatrick's model and statistical analyses showing notable but moderate improvements in learning outcomes.
  • Despite high satisfaction with the program, participants struggled to apply management concepts due to contextual limitations and barriers like resource constraints and gender stereotypes, suggesting a need for additional training in finance and human resources.

Sensory habituation allows us to decrease responsiveness to repetitive or prolonged stimuli over time, making them easy to filter out and not interfere with ongoing activities. As such, habituation could be an important aspect to be evaluated within a sensory and cognitive assessment. The main aim of the present study was to validate an Italian version of the Sensory Habituation Questionnaire (S-Hab-Q), a self-report tool assessing how long an adult individual takes to adapt to daily sensory stimuli.

Prenatal exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has a detrimental effect on early cognitive development. Based on these observations, some researchers suggested that prenatal exposure to PCB may be an environmental cause of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To investigate the potential link between prenatal exposure to PCB, we analyzed the link between the level of prenatal PCB exposure and ASD risk evaluated at 18 months of age and behavioral problems at 5 years old based on longitudinal birth cohort data collected in urban areas in Japan based on the data from 115 mother-infant pairs.
