In quantum mechanics, a quantum system is irreversibly collapsed by a projective measurement. Hence, delicately probing the time evolution of a quantum system holds the key to understanding curious phenomena. Here, we experimentally explore an anomalous time evolution, where, illustratively, a particle disappears from a box and emerges in a different box, with a certain moment in which it can be found in neither of them.

Tattoos are highly trendy in western culture, but many people regret their tattoos for many reasons. It is essential to be aware of the ink location in advance to reduce the long and short-term side effects. In this study, diffuse reflectance (DR) experiments were conducted on two-layer (2L) tissue-mimicking phantoms, where ink was sandwiched between the layers.

Significance: Numerous optical imaging and spectroscopy techniques are used to study the tissue-optical properties; the majority of them are limited in information regarding the penetration depth. A simple, safe, easily applicable diagnostic technique is required to get deeper tissue information in a multilayer structure.
Aim: A fiber-based diffuse reflectance (DR) technique is used to extract and quantify the bottom layer absorption coefficients in two-layer (2L) tissue-mimicking solid phantoms.

If nature allowed nonlocal correlations other than those predicted by quantum mechanics, would that contradict some physical principle? Various approaches have been put forward in the past two decades in an attempt to single out quantum nonlocality. However, none of them can explain the set of quantum correlations arising in the simplest scenarios. Here, it is shown that generalized uncertainty relations, as well as a specific notion of locality, give rise to both familiar and new characterizations of quantum correlations.

Emphasis using phototheranostics has been placed on the construction of multifunctional nanoplatforms for simultaneous tumor diagnosis and therapy. Herein, we put forth a novel nanosized luminescent material using the incorporation of red emissive carbon dots on gold nanorods through polyethylene glycol as a covalent linkage for dual-modal imaging and photothermal therapy. The novel nanohybrids, not only retain the optical properties of the gold nanorod and carbon dots, but also possess superior imaging performance in both confocal laser scanning microscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy.

Atherosclerosis (AS), the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular disease, needs an early detection for treatment and prevention of fatal events. Here, for the first time, we applied gold nanorods (GNRs)-assisted diffusion reflection (DR), a noninvasive technique for in vivo detection of AS in a high-fat-diet-induced c57bl mouse model, which resembles the manifestation of AS in humans. DR simply detects the change in light reflection profile of tissue due to the accumulation of GNRs in the AS plaques and enables clear detection of AS lesions in carotid and femoral arteries of these hyperlipidemic mice.

In this work, we present a novel, simple, and highly accurate three-dimensional (3D) diffusion reflection (DR) imaging system and method for the detection of accumulation sites of gold nanorods (GNRs) within the tissue. GNRs are intensively used for diagnosis purposes of varied diseases, mainly because of their ability to well absorb visible light, which introduces them as terrific contrast agents in various imaging and theranostics methods. Lately, these GNRs unique absorption properties have served in DR intensity-based measurements, suggesting a novel diagnostic tool, DR-GNRs.

Worldwide, more than one million women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, making it the most common female malignancy in the developed world. Germline mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are estimated to increase the risk for developing breast cancer by up to 87%. From a clinical point of view, identification of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers offers an opportunity to early identify or prevent the development of malignancy; therefore the ability to determine which women are more likely to carry BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations is of great importance.

B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (B-CLL) and B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-ALL) are the most common type of leukaemia in adults and children, respectively. Today, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is the standard for detecting chromosomal aberrations that reflect adverse and favorable outcome. This study revealed a new, simple, and fast diagnostic tool to detect pathological cells by measuring and imaging the fluorescence lifetime (FLT) using FLT imaging microscopy (FLIM) of the peripheral blood (PB) cells of B-CLL samples that were labeled with the DNA binder, DAPI.

A critical challenge arising during a surgical procedure for tumor removal is the determination of tumor margins. Gold nanorods (GNRs) conjugated to epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) (GNRs-EGFR) have long been used in the detection of cancerous cells as the expression of EGFR dramatically increases once the tissue becomes cancerous. Optical techniques for the identification of these GNRs-EGFR in tumor are intensively developed based on the unique scattering and absorption properties of the GNRs.

In this study we report the use of gold nanorods (GNRs) as absorption contrast agents in the diffusion reflection (DR) method for the in vivo detection of atherosclerotic injury. The early detection and characterization of atherosclerotic vascular disease is considered to be one of the greatest medical challenges today. We show that macrophage cells, which are major components of unstable active atherosclerotic plaques, uptake gold nanoparticles, resulting in a change in the optical properties of tissue-like phantoms and a unique DR profile.

This paper presents a novel concept involving sensing the back-reflected and absorbed light at two polarization states and at several wavelengths from gold nanorods (GNRs). While the GNRs are flowing in the bloodstream the reflected light has a high degree of polarization and only one resonance wavelength. When the GNRs are located in a tumor the reflected light has a low degree of polarization and two resonance wavelengths are detected.
