Improved methods for the synthesis of nicotine are of great importance due to the wide range of applications of synthetic nicotine, which is free from contamination with nitrosamines. Herein, we present a four-step chemical synthesis of ()-nicotine, involving the reduction in myosmine, enantiomeric separation of nornicotine, and subsequent methylation of the appropriate enantiomer of nornicotine obtained. The reduction in myosmine was investigated using both electrochemical and chemical approaches, achieving up to 90% yields of pure nornicotine.

A site-selective functionalization of a C(sp)-H bond was achieved in the presence of an intrinsically more reactive C(sp)-H bond by controlling the orientation of a directing group via a photo-induced E/Z isomerization of an oxime ether. By combining E/Z isomerization and an electron deficient Cp*Ir(III) catalyst, the scope of oxime ethers in C(sp)-H functionalization was successfully expanded. Based on this strategy, the order of C-H activation was switchable and successive C(sp)-H/C(sp)-H and C(sp)-H/C(sp)-H double functionalizations were accomplished to construct densely functionalized structures.

Syzygioblanes A-C (-), isolated from the Indonesian traditional herbal medicine (), are meroterpenoids with a spiro ring formed through a [4 + 2] cycloaddition of the flavanone desmethoxymatteucinol with cyclic sesquiterpenoids. Our ongoing phytochemical investigation of resulted in the isolation of five additional spiro-meroterpenoids, syzygioblanes D-H (-), which are hybrids of the same flavanone with eudesmane/cadinane-type sesquiterpenoids. A possible biosynthetic pathway involves enzymatic dearomative hydroxylation of desmethoxymatteucinol followed by [4 + 2] cyclization of the resulting diene with a cyclic sesquiterpene containing an exocyclic methylene to form the unique spiro ring in the syzygioblane molecule.

Secondary interactions, such as hydrogen bonding or phase separation, can enhance the stability of dynamic covalent materials without compromising on desired dynamic properties. Here, we investigate the combination of multiple secondary interactions in dynamic covalent materials based on acylsemicarbazides (ASCs), with the aim of achieving tunable material properties. The effects of different ASC substituents on the dynamic covalent and hydrogen bonding capabilities were investigated in a small molecule study using a combined experimental and theoretical approach, and revealed the presence of cooperative hydrogen-bonding interactions in 2 directions in one of the derivatives.
