Article Synopsis
- Pharmacogenomics (PGx) is a growing field in developing countries, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), but research and information are limited, making it challenging to apply findings across diverse populations.
- The study reviewed PGx knowledge among the LAC scientific community, identified barriers to its clinical use, and surveyed 106 professionals to evaluate these obstacles, revealing that the primary barrier is the lack of guidelines for implementing PGx in practice.
- Despite these challenges, LAC has contributed 3.44% of global PGx publications and identified gene/drug pairs, such as tamoxifen and clopidogrel, as significant for improving genomic medicine responses, although cost-effectiveness concerns remain a critical issue.

Introduction: The presence of mercury in the environment is a worldwide concern. Inorganic mercury is present in industrial materials, is employed in medical devices, is widely used in batteries, is a component of fluorescent light bulbs, and it has been associated with human poisoning in gold mining areas. The nephrotoxicity induced by inorganic mercury is a relevant health problem mainly in developing countries.

We analyzed the contribution of TNF-α intracellular pathway in the development of apoptosis in the liver of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. In liver tissue, diabetes promoted a significant increase of TNF-α/TNF-R1, and led to the activation of caspase-8, of nuclear factor kappa B (NFκB), and JNK signaling pathways. The activation of NFκB led to an induction of iNOS and consequent increase in NO production.
