Introduction: Sequential boost intensity-modulated radiotherapy (SQB-IMRT) uses two different planning CTs (pCTs) and treatment plans. SQB-IMRT is a form of adaptive radiotherapy that allows for responses to changes in the shape of the tumour and organs at risk (OAR). On the other hand, dose accumulation with the two plans can be difficult to evaluate.

Background: The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of proton is considered to be dependent on biological parameters and fractional dose. While hyperfractionated photon therapy was effective in the treatment of patients with head and neck cancers, its effect in intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) under the variable RBE has not been investigated in detail.

Purpose: To study the effect of variable RBE on hyperfractionated IMPT for the treatment of pharyngeal cancer.

Purpose: This study sought to explore whether the experience level of the first assistant surgeon influences perioperative organ injuries (ureteral, bladder, and intestinal injuries) in patients undergoing total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) for benign diseases. We defined an experienced surgeon as a surgeon certified by the Skill Qualification Committee of the Japan Society of Gynecologic and Obstetric Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Therapy or a surgeon with equivalent surgical skills.

Methods: We reviewed our surgical registry database of TLH for benign indications between 2014 and 2020 and only selected cases performed by an experienced primary surgeon.

Article Synopsis
  • A study found that adding immune checkpoint inhibitors to chemotherapy effectively treats extensive-stage small cell lung cancer, but there's no proven second-line treatment for patients who have already received these therapies.* -
  • Researchers evaluated the safety and efficacy of amrubicin as a second-line treatment in 150 patients, comparing those previously treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors to those who weren't.* -
  • Results showed no significant differences in treatment effectiveness or adverse events between the two patient groups, indicating that prior immune checkpoint inhibitor treatment does not negatively impact amrubicin's efficacy or safety.*

Background: Ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting neuroendocrine tumors are rare diseases. Patients with ACTH-secreting pancreatic neuroendocrine carcinomas have a poor prognosis. Infections and coagulopathies have been reported as the cause of death.

Background: Ceftriaxone, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with a long plasma half-life, is widely used to treat various infections. The use of ceftriaxone can sometimes induce biliary sludge or stone formation. Although most cases of ceftriaxone-induced pseudolithiasis are asymptomatic or mild and resolve with discontinuation of the drug, we experienced an elderly case of severe acute necrotizing calculous cholecystitis after administration of ceftriaxone.

The Hokkaido medical personnel training plan connecting humans and medicine aims to train"Medical personnel for genome medicine"," Medical personnel for rare cancer and childhood cancer", and"Medical personnel who promote cancer measures according to patient's life stage". We have worked on preparing medical professionals who undergo training courses not only in the graduate school but also in the community medicine centers cooperating with central medical centers in Hokkaido. Furthermore, we have been committed to training medical staff who provide comprehensive healthcare for patients with cancer cross-regionally, cross-sectionally, and tumor-agnostically and researchers who can pursue genome medicine.

We report here the complete genome sequences of three Staphylococcus haemolyticus strains isolated from a mouse fibrotic lung tissue and exhibiting proapoptotic activity on human lung alveolar epithelial cells. The genomes were obtained from a combination of Illumina MiSeq and Oxford Nanopore MinION sequencing.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer is the leading cause of death globally, and mushrooms have shown potential in cancer treatment, though the specific mechanisms are not fully understood.
  • Researchers studied the medicinal effects of fairy ring-forming mushrooms, particularly focusing on bioactive compounds like imidazole-4-carboxamide, to evaluate their anticancer properties against melanoma.
  • Results indicated that combining imidazole-4-carboxamide with cisplatin significantly reduced tumor size and increased immune cell infiltration, suggesting that this compound could enhance the effectiveness of traditional cancer therapies.

Aim: We prospectively examined the association between leisure activities and changes in instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) among participants of the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study (JAGES).

Methods: We analyzed data collected from 49 732 JAGES participants (23 359 men and 26 373 women), aged ≥65 years, from 24 municipalities in Japan.

Measurements: Baseline data were obtained for 25 types of leisure activities in which the cohort members participated.

Article Synopsis
  • Many patients with nontuberculous mycobacteria pulmonary disease have no symptoms, making diagnosis challenging, as only a small percentage are confirmed despite suspicion based on radiological findings.* -
  • A study involving 123 patients used digital PCR on various biological samples, showing that bronchial lavage fluid had the highest detection rate for nontuberculous mycobacteria, with 100% sensitivity and high specificity.* -
  • The results indicate that digital PCR can effectively enhance diagnosis, particularly when multiple positive tests from bronchial lavage fluid, sputum, or saliva are obtained, leading to better identification of the disease.*

A Microbiome-Derived Peptide Induces Apoptosis of Cells from Different Tissues.

Cells

October 2021

Department of Immunology, Faculty and Graduate School of Medicine, Mie University, Tsu 514-8507, Mie, Japan.

Apoptosis is a programmed cell death involved in embryogenesis and tissue homeostasis under physiological conditions. However, abnormalities in the process of apoptosis are implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases. The human microbiota may release products that induce apoptosis of host cells.

Protective Role of Recombinant Human Thrombomodulin in Diabetes Mellitus.

Cells

August 2021

Department of Immunology, Faculty and Graduate School of Medicine, Mie University, Tsu 514-8507, Mie, Japan.

Diabetes mellitus is a global threat to human health. The ultimate cause of diabetes mellitus is insufficient insulin production and secretion associated with reduced pancreatic β-cell mass. Apoptosis is an important and well-recognized mechanism of the progressive loss of functional β-cells.

  • Diabetes mellitus is a major global health issue causing economic strain and severe health complications.
  • The study tested limonite on mouse models with diabetes and obesity to assess its effects on glucose metabolism and gut microbiome.
  • Results showed that limonite improved body weight, reduced blood sugar levels, enhanced insulin secretion, and positively altered gut microbial populations, suggesting it could help manage diabetes and obesity conditions.

Background: Fulminant type 1 diabetes mellitus (FT1DM) is a subtype of type 1 diabetes mellitus characterized by an abrupt onset and a rapid and complete functional loss of islet β cells. It is a very rare disease generally associated with ketoacidosis and the absence of circulating pancreatic islet-related autoantibodies. Diabetic ketoacidosis with normal blood glucose levels has been reported during sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor therapy.
